To be surprised she couldn't use the oven?

Last night partners sister came round and as I was on a potential new job call, I asked her to turn the oven on (Had a chicken in there already). When I got off the call, I checked and saw it had not been turned on. Aibu to say a grown woman should be able to turn an oven on?!
She said she thought she had done it.

I have the same oven they use on Bake Off. Every time that one of them finds out that they’ve left their cake in a stone cold oven for twenty minutes and are now running late I yell “thank god it’s not just me!”

Aibu to say a grown woman should know that leaving a raw chicken sitting in a cold oven then turning the oven on to heat up slowly rather than putting the chicken into a preheated, hot oven is the perfect recipe for food poisoning?

ThatIsMyPotato · 13/05/2021 13:57

Why did you just have a chicken sat in the oven? Why did this cause you so much angst? You can just turn it on when you see it isn't on.

ThatIsMyPotato · 13/05/2021 13:58

Just turn it on after your call. YABU

minniemomo · 13/05/2021 13:59

My dp did this at our house, the oven has an on off dial and temperature

ThatIsMyPotato · 13/05/2021 13:59

chesirecat99 exactly. Why was there a chicken sat in your cold over OP?

user47000000000 · 13/05/2021 14:00

You have way too much free time if you’re starting a thread like this.

TheWitchersWife · 13/05/2021 14:01

I randomly forgot how to use my oven.
Tried turning it on, nothing, no heat or light. Got as far as being on hold to the warranty company when I realised it was one knob to turn it on and another one to set the temperature 😳
I'd turned it on but left the temperature at 0, hence why it wasn't heating up.

Gwenhwyfar · 13/05/2021 14:02

I can turn my own over on, but not somebody else's necessarily.

WingingItEveryDay7 · 13/05/2021 14:03

I've always had a gas oven. Moved to a new house last year and the new one is fan assisted. First time using it I thought I had turned it on..... Turns out I hadn't. Easily done when it's not your own!

GravityFalls · 13/05/2021 14:04

I have a really simple gas cooker and even so managed to put the top oven on instead of the bottom one last night. Couldn't work out why it sounded like it was on, but was stone cold...

3scape · 13/05/2021 14:07

Not all ovens are the same. Mine does a great job of lighting up and show I g you the temperature and beeping but that doesn't mean it's on.

aSofaNearYou · 13/05/2021 14:08

Er no, this is a bit patronising. It might be weird for her not to be able to use her own oven but they are all different. Perfectly understandable.

JinglingHellsBells · 13/05/2021 14:15

I'm more concerned about a grown woman not knowing how to cook a chicken :)

First rule of cooking

LIGHT YOUR OVEN FIRST

You don't want a chicken in there being warmed up slowly while your oven reaches the right temperature.

nancywhitehead · 13/05/2021 14:29

She probably just forgot or possibly couldn't work out your oven if it's a fancy one.

I'm surprised it upset you enough to start a thread on here.

InVirusVeritas · 13/05/2021 14:36

Mine requires me to turn the clock on before it will heat up Confused.

It is a big brand and not that old. It is just a very stupid requirement for cooking something. I have a big clock on the wall, I do need to use the oven clock, but manufacturer insists otherwise no heat.

ItsAlwaysAFriendNeverMe · 13/05/2021 14:46

OP, where at thou? C'mon, defend yer self!

@LemonSherbetFancies or are you still trying to work out the oven?

InVirusVeritas · 13/05/2021 14:46
  • I don't need to use the oven clock.

This thread should be read by oven designers. It shouldn't be that hard.

Flissitytricity · 13/05/2021 14:47

My brother has a microwave oven which baffles me and has done for years. I have watched him twiddle and turn the numerous dials and it works for him but I can not work it at all unless he stands beside me and intructs. My own is simple. I have been in others' cars and boggled at the array of flashy dashboard gauges and dials. They remind me of a an airplane flight deck!
Keep it simple is my motto. I am "of an age" though and I concede my limitations in the world of technology.

Killahangilion · 13/05/2021 14:48

YANBU.

Unless it’s seriously space age with millions of settings, surely she could have turned it on easily enough? Does she not know how to cook?

My 12 year old knows how to turn our ovens on, so why can’t an adult woman figure it out?

Flissitytricity · 13/05/2021 14:50

*instRucts !

I have broken my perfect record now as always do a double check before submitting! Shame on me. Blush

1forAll74 · 13/05/2021 15:03

I have been confused about ovens, washing machines and microwaves for years. But not my own, but other peoples.. who insist on buy fancy gadgets, with far too many settings on them, most of which they never use. Anything that comes with a hefty instruction manual does my head in..I bought a new kettle a few weeks ago, and it came with an instruction book, that was about 8 pages long. I only wanted to plug it in,and boil some water for a cup of tea.and not launch it in a space ship and send it to the moon.

Ours does that, someone told me it's so it doesn't come on if there's a powercut during cooking. Not sure if that's true.
Flissitytricity · 13/05/2021 15:14

@1forAll74

Wink I understand. Same with me. Every time I observe those "barista" staff working the coffee machines I am tempted to ask do they need a degree for those jobs?

emmathedilemma · 13/05/2021 15:14

@DogsSausages

Why would you put a chicken in a cold oven
This is the more important question!!
