Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Snowdonia

Am so pleased to see the Mournes get a few mentions. I get goosebumps just thinking about the Mourne Mountains. They are just a 40 minute drive from me and I just love that whole area. Most people are pointed straight in the direction of the Antrim coast when they arrive in NI and it is utterly beautiful (my car can find its own way roundGrin), but the Mournes are just breathtaking.

I agree with Leeds. SIL lived near Leeds and I loved a trip or two there every time I stayed.

@Geminijust

Really hoping to see Cumbrian Coast/Western Lakes on here!

We've booked for the summer. Originaliy looking for actual Lake District but too pricey/low availability. Heard the Western side was much less touristy and uncrowded. Was certainly cheaper and seems plenty to do but we will see!!!

Absolutely - very different to the tourist hot spots of the lakes but rugged and beautiful. There are some amazing wild swimming spots if that is your thing or some truly beautiful walks, pubs and train rides. I would do your research though as it's not as obvious as the popular part. Also plan your route to get there, the satnav may well take you over hardknot and brasenose pass which can be a bit hairy in a camper etc

@jollyho

Shocked to see the Wirral mentioned. I’ve heard there’s lovely bits but being married to a Wirralian, just no. Overrated if anything.

However, Liverpool, Portsmouth, and the isle of Purbeck are my favourite.

I don't think the Wirral is 'rated' at all - it's off most peoples radar - I was also born there and love it still despite moving away - West Kirby - Crabbing! - Hilbre Island , Totty's Ice Cream, New Brighton - the Black Pearl (being rebuilt!), Thurstaston Hill, The Wirral Way - oh I love it!

Lancashire around Pendle Hill

Melton Mowbray area over to Rutland Water, Stamford and the Vale of Belvoir.

Hobbesmanc · 13/05/2021 11:15

Lots of these suggestions are cool but not really underrated. If I was looking for somewhere to move to I'd think about Todmorden (cheaper and less pretentious that Hebden) or Whitchurch/Oswestry in Shropshire- easier access than Shrewsbury. Thirsk is a vibrant little N Yorks town if you can't afford Ripon or Knaresborough. Holiday wise there's few places that could be described as unrerrated but you can have marvellous beaches and avoid the crowds in N Yorks by swerving hotspots like Whitby and heading further North to Saltburn and Marske

weebarra · 13/05/2021 11:34

Scottish Borders - Peebles is a lovely town with some great independent shops
Glasgow
Newcastle

AlanThePig · 13/05/2021 11:34

We were looking for a few days away. My lovely DIL works for a hotel chain and she suggested a place they have in Northumberland. Must admit I raised an eyebrow, not somewhere I'd ever considered before.

Anyway, up for a change we've booked it. Monday to Friday. I plan to explore the coastline, visit Hadrian's Wall and Beamish and look at Durham Cathedral.

Very pleased to see it mentioned on here.

user64325 · 13/05/2021 11:58

I have in laws in New Brighton and that would be my recommendation for a UK seaside break a fraction of the cost of Brighton and sandy beaches too. It has Vale Park off the promenade with a fantastic fairy village, band stand, Liverpool skyline views. Nearby ferry crossing, fairground, theatre, bowling, fish and chip shops, mini golf, soft plays, a Fort, a lighthouse, marine lake, restaurants, street art tour, mermaid sculpture tour, driftwood pirate ship and other driftwood art, antique shops, lovely Victorian houses, a skate park, sand dunes, cinema, and a direct tunnel to Liverpool if you don't fancy a ferry and want to go to museums and city attractions. Although I believe they are getting their own Eureka Science museum next year.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/05/2021 12:14

@user64325 yay! I am from there and I miss it - I love going back and seeing all the changes - it's really changing - Wallasey was in the Guardian a few weeks back as the fastest moving property market in the UK - which is a shame as I was hoping to retire home mortgage free!

Northumberland is beautiful. We go on holiday there most years; it really is my favourite part of the UK.

Leicester
Bradford
Scottish Borders

IfNot · 13/05/2021 13:25

Re my post, I think I might need to defend my choice of Bradford!
Yes its sister Leeds is all hard and shiny and glossed over, and the money is there, but Bradford has some wonderful Victorian buildings, a massive piazza with watery accents, an ice rink ( still I think?) the Media Museum ( even though getting rid of the film and photography exhibits was criminal) great Indian/ Bangladesh food, hills and vistas of the surrounding dales. It's a place with lots of history and the people are nicer than them in Leeds Wink

I've heard this a lot since we booked. Really looking forward to exploring it.

Lupinhere37 · 13/05/2021 13:35

@Sausageroll67 Couldn’t agree more about Monmouth. So many little hidden gems in the backstreets to look at and I love to walk around Vauxhall Park and see the view of the back of the town.
I really enjoy a walk along the river in Chepstow; sometimes eat in the garden of the Italian Restaurant on the riverside. Lovely view of an evening, especially when the castle is lit up. Abergavenny I don’t really know; although there’s a fab Waitrose there!

lexy31 · 13/05/2021 13:58

Leicester, went to uni there, nice city with lot's of culture and history

LakieLady · 13/05/2021 14:07
@LakieLady how is Stamford in the south? The last time l looked it was in the East Midlands.
I think said mostly in the south! I have been north of Watford, despite it being further than France for me. Grin

User135644 · 13/05/2021 17:06

I'll give Newcastle a mention out of the big cities.

SaltyAF · 13/05/2021 17:08

I think Shrewsbury / Shropshire is overrated personally. West Wales.

grumpymacgrumpface · 13/05/2021 17:10

@Bananalanacake

Aldeburgh in Suffolk.
Yes - much nicer than Southwold.
Keepyourdistance000 · 13/05/2021 17:21

Bognor Regis. Love the beach and at low tide it's possible to walk for miles along the sand. The tide can go out quite a long way.

Holy Island and the surrounding area.

The National Forest, Derbyshire

Sandsnake · 13/05/2021 17:28

I’m going to say Surrey (or parts of it at least). It seems to get a bad rep here as snobby and bland. However, lots of the countryside is fantastic, really lovely. Great pubs and restaurants and - whilst I’m sure that they snobby house price obsessed people exist - my experience of living here hasn’t been like that at all.

I will second Staffordshire moorlands - really like it but doesn’t tend to get much attention.

Maybe I should go back to Hull. The only time I went I thought it was really horrible, but then I think that lots of places can seem that way if you catch the wrong side of them.

tryinghardnottocry · 13/05/2021 17:28

There are small pockets of Croydon that are acceptable - South Croydon and Sanderstead
