Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

OP posts:

Another here for Swansea and the Gower. Been going there for last 25 years. I'm English and amazed how few people have heard of the Gower.

Serin · 13/05/2021 08:01

YADNBU about Nantwich, its such a happy little town. Alsager, just up the road, is heaven for independent shops. Love South Cheshire.

Home🙈

Cleethorpes!
I forgot this little gem.
Seaside without the crowds and traffic, a bargain Scarborough dupe.

Wiltshire90 · 13/05/2021 08:30

I went to Herefordshire and thought it was gorgeous. Lots of Wiltshire too - the area around Pewsey and Avebury is very beautiful and feels remote.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 13/05/2021 08:34

Northumberland coast (from alnwick type level to bamburgh specifically) i only say under rated as it has some beaches more beatiful that devon and cornwall but far fewer tourists.

Also wales. I never knew how beautiful it was u til I visited last year. Like a much quieter lake district with nicer beaches

Budleigh Salterton
Sidmouth

Canadeeio · 13/05/2021 08:49

Another enthusiastic nod for Swansea. Good to see South Wales feature so much here. I'd also add Carmarthenshire - Gower and Pembrokeshire are of course spectacular, but Carmarthenshire, seemingly a bit overlooked as it's sandwiched between them, has plenty of charm too; many fabulous places to visit, and Carmarthen itself is a lovely town.

MargaretFraggle · 13/05/2021 09:02

Bristol is not underrated!

Violinist64 · 13/05/2021 09:07

@LakieLady how is Stamford in the south? The last time l looked it was in the East Midlands.

MrsAlexanderHamilton · 13/05/2021 09:08

@commatose, I was going to mention St Bees to @Geminijust, but didn’t want to seem OTT. Hartley’s ice cream from the cafe there is my absolute favourite! I know the one from Seascale is really good too (think it might be Mawson’s?)

JudgeJ · 13/05/2021 09:10

Surely if somewhere is underrated, one of the reasons is that people don't flock there and it's best not to mention it! My lips are sealed!

Violinist64 · 13/05/2021 09:11

Everyone knows the Lake District but I would put in a vote for parts of the Cumbrian coast, particularly St. Bees.

Violinist64 · 13/05/2021 09:12

Just noticed l crossed posts with mentioning St. Bees. No apology, it is beautiful and where my father was from.

MargaretFraggle · 13/05/2021 09:13

Me too Judge. Mine is in Wales.... somewhere Wink

Spidey66 · 13/05/2021 09:15

London. Wink

Puffalicious · 13/05/2021 09:25

@MargateSands

Also, Glasgow. Seems to get no attention compared to Edinburgh but in many ways it’s a better city.
Without a shadow of a doubt. I've lived in Edinburgh and like it a lot, but it's not as vibrant/ multicultural/has as much heart as Glasgow.

Liverpool blew me away on a long weekend with teen DC. They absolutely loved it- so many things to do.

Puffalicious · 13/05/2021 09:34

@NoProblem123

Rhyl ! And I was very disappointed to see it mentioned on the other thread.

A lovely clean sweeping sandy beach that you can park right next to for free.
Amazing Kite Surfing available.
Views towards Llandudno’s Great Orme and the Snowdonia range including Snowdon itself (All within a short drive).

The reason it was on the other thread is because it's an armpit of a place.

I definitely agree it has a nice beach in town and it's got lots of things to go to within driving distance, but as a place in itself it's particularly awful. We spent a week there with DC and i would NEVER go back if you paid me.

The confirmation was a lovely sweet shop owner on hearing our accents asked ' Why would you come here if you have the whole of Scotland to choose from?'.

@Cheerfulcharlie I spent my first 28 years in the Chilterns. Now I live in Northern Ireland I'm not sure I'll ever bother going for a walk there again, lots of nice pubs but scenery is a bit bland in comparison!

Adventureswith · 13/05/2021 09:55

Belfast, Derry, North Irish coast, Fermanagh Lakes, Mournes. Most of NI in fact.
North Yorkshire - stunning. lovely people, not overcrowded or expensive, lots to do.

sultanasofping · 13/05/2021 09:56

shh no-one mention the Wirral. It's a terrible place Wink no beaches to speak of, certainly not lovely quiet one with loads of fantastic walks around. Also there's nowhere to eat, no gorgeous pubs, no farm shops and definitely not the best ice cream ever in Parkgate. Also there are absolutely not fantastic views over to Wales.
It's really difficult to get to - no transport links direct to Chester and Liverpool - worst place in the world Wink honest

Sausageroll67 · 13/05/2021 10:04

Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny. We frequently do a little tour of all 3.

NCNCNCNCNCNCNCNCNC · 13/05/2021 10:08

@Adventureswith anything in particular that's a must see in Derry? Have heard shopping there is good. We are in Co. Down but moved from England during pandemic and would love to explore more.

Newcastle Emlyn is also a nice little town.
