Overrated places in the UK

999 replies

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

It’s strange , we have Italian friends who love the IOW.

And I love cornwall and bath and Bristol .

I can’t think of many places I don’t like except some North devon areas such as Weston supermare . Definitely a bit rough .And a few others resorts round there that are now just big lovely houses turned into dingy flats . I guess leftover from the times where no one did uk holidays anymore .

TiltTopTable · 12/05/2021 18:28

I must be odd, or easily pleased, but I like most of the places mentioned. Not too keen on Devon as it's a bit boring, and don't like Blackpool, but I love the lake district, the peak district, Cornwall, Bristol, Stratford, the Cotswolds, Edinburgh, Oxford, York etc etc.

HotMess21 · 12/05/2021 18:28

@MaMaLa321

I live in Bristol, and it beats living in the countryside, but sometimes I get tired of the general level of fuckwittery. Plus the bloody cyclists on the pavement.
Agreed. There is also the annoyance of motorised scooters on the road 🙄
Jumpingintosummer · 12/05/2021 18:29

Torquay - 3% pretty, 97% shithole.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 12/05/2021 18:29

Brighton, absolute over priced shit hole with aggressive rich people who dress like they've just been in a secure psychiatric unit for 20 years.
Homeless people and drugs everywhere.Purports to be "green" but all of their rubbish is burnt in Newhaven down the road - another shithole poisoning everyone in the town.

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 18:29

@MasterBeth

West Bridgford.

This suburb of Nottingham will mean nothing to most of you but to the people of Nottingham it is the Fulham, the Altrincham, the Morningside, the St Albans, the Leamington, the Clifton (Bristol one) of the East Midlands. Apparently.

It is supposedly very Mumsnet and naive and desirable, but you’d be hard pressed to find anything remarkable about it - a pretty ugly main street filled with midmarket chain restaurants, no decent pubs, uniform Victorian streets and peopled with rather too many self-satisfied arseholes. Not awful, but awfully overrated.

Good reminder. Altrincham. I don’t understand why people like it. So polluted.

Weston Super Mare is Somerset.
CravingTheSun · 12/05/2021 18:30

Bath! I’ve visited a couple of times, thought I’d really like it but just didn’t get a good vibe :(

Pinkallium · 12/05/2021 18:31

Bristol. Lots of Welsh friends have moved there and consider it wonderful but every time I visit I think they should have stayed in Cardiff.

TopBlogger · 12/05/2021 18:32

Nandos, wherever it is

I love Cornwall, Yorkshire (and York!) and Edinburgh.

Dislike "rural" Surrey (full of MacMansions and golf courses) and Lake District (stunning countryside but overpriced, strangely bland touristy towns)

CaveMum · 12/05/2021 18:32

@SafferUpNorth

Land's End.... grim, commercialised tourist trap. In a lovely spot though. Overall I love Cornwall but Lands End is just depressing.
One of my random claims to fame is that I gave riding lessons to the daughter of the American family that owned Lands End at the time (late 90s) - I was working at the riding centre where the girls from Cheltenham Ladies College came to ride. She was a lovely girl, called Amber, and had a gorgeous pony called Dancer who I exercised when she couldn’t come out to ride him.

When I left the riding school her dad handed me an envelope with £300 cash in it to say thanks for teaching his daughter Grin

Re stone henge, I think some of the Neolithic sites on Anglesey have more atmosphere around them. I see someone's mentioned Anglesey, but you've got to decide what you want from where you are going and if it fits that. Camping/walking/fishing/good pubs/beaches/historical sites, with bits for the kids and Anglesey ticks all of the boxes.

warmandtoasty2day · 12/05/2021 18:33

@BrumBoo

Isle of Wight. It was like a giant Brexit retirement village. They sold Golliwog memorabilia in tourist shops. The beaches were shit. It was like a giant version of Rhyl....
we've just moved there from a shit town in the south east, in the tourist season apparently just 1in 23 people are locals. just a bit popular you could say.
Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 18:33

Also whilst I’m remembering Altrincham, Dunham Massey. Can the people of Manchester really not find any other flat piece of grass to go to?

London!

Padstow and Tintagel

Weston-Super-Mare is in North Somerset.
Crayfishforyou · 12/05/2021 18:34

The Lake District.
Overpriced and crap in the rain

MegBusset · 12/05/2021 18:35

Margate. Basically Blackpool covered by a thin (very thin) layer of gentrification
West London. Traffic and yahs
Edinburgh. Coachloads of tourists at every corner
Cambridge centre is gorgeous and the museums are amazing but half of it seems out of bounds behind college gates

CravingTheSun · 12/05/2021 18:35

I also briefly lived in Cheltenham, thought it was going to be lovely...but it really wasn’t.

FatherBuzzCagney · 12/05/2021 18:36

St Albans. Grew up there and watched all the life drain out of it as the money moved in. Soulless dormitory town that kids itself that the old bits in the centre mean it has some character. A million estate agents and mid-price chain restaurants but it took 20 years to re-open the only cinema because culture: who the fuck needs that? If the Daily Mail was a town it would be St Albans. The only point in its favour is that Harpenden is worse: mogadon in bricks and mortar.

KateTheEighth · 12/05/2021 18:37

Padstow and Newquay

Awful places

@InTheNightWeWillWish

Another vote for Durham. There is just nothing to do…
Yep, and I live near there. In fact... Barnard Castle. You won’t like it. Don’t come.
