Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

I still threaten the teens that if they don't work hard for their exams then they'll have to go to Bangor Uni...

What an odd threat. It's not Oxbridge, but certainly not the worst Uni by far. I've known a couple of graduates from there, only ever heard positive things about the city and university. I think there's a line between disliking a holiday and behaving like an area is being sent to borstal....

York - The shambles is a nice street with some crappy shops. The minster is overcrowded and dusty and the bridges are just bridges.

Blackpool - hell hole.

London - Overpriced and overhyped.

Ambleside - busy.

Manchester - if you're not going shopping there's no point.

IrmaFayLear · 13/05/2021 11:02

snnnort at poster complaining that Portmeirion is a “pastiche of an Italianate resort”. That’s like complaining that Madame Tussauds is full of wax people that aren’t real.

Agree that so many people have no imagination. They trudge to the “top” tourist attractions, don’t know anything about them, disconsolately buy ice creams, and wander round looking miserable and bored.

Alderley Edge ... plastic surgery/fakery freak show - all sexual identities & all ages.
Alderley Edge ... plastic surgery/fakery freak show I've attached some photos to show everyone just how fake it is. Or maybe you didn't bother with the actual Edge and just went into the pretentious bars? .

all sexual identities & all ages.
and that's a problem because???

the bridges are just bridges

GrinGrinGrin What were you expecting? The mind boggles!

I lived in York for years, never heard anyone claiming that the bridges haved special qualities. The view of the river from the bridges is nice, but that applies in most cities with rivers.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 13/05/2021 11:07

^ had, not haved!

I love these threads so much. I especially enjoy the endless duplication of the idea that Brighton's overated. It's not at all - it's universily derided on Mumsnet and always has been.

I agree - it's the same with London. I wonder if it's because both these places are very expensive to live?

It also goes to show that Mumsnet's opinion on these sorts of things can't be trusted. My advice would be to go in person and make your own mind up!

Some people find everything boring, and others go to places utterly unsuited to their tastes and then moan about them.

The poster who didn’t like Portmeirion - what exactly did they expect? Rides? They said then they enjoyed a zip wire. Why would they think you could zip wire around Portmeirion? Confused

I don’t much like Brighton. But that’s me. I can understand how it appeals to some, so I can’t say it is “awful” and certainly not “boring”.

The places that are wholly bad are the too popular ones, but that I suppose is not their fault. I can imagine this thread after the summer: people will be saying everywhere is dreadful due to the volume of holidaymakers aimlessly tramping around in anoraks.

Errrrr no. I didn't expect to be able to zip line around Portmeirion. What a bizarre comment.

Clearly the examples because they are in close (ish) proximity to each other so I was explaining that I enjoyed other places in the local area but that there is nothing to do in Portmeirion except walk around and pay for it!

Best way to do Oxford Street, London = Liberty, Selfridges and then cocktails in Le Fumoir in Claridge's. Heaven!
Liberty and Claridges aren't on Oxford St Confused

Stonehenge has become 100x more appealing to me since Gertrude the (very rare) great bustard set up home there.

All the people on here slaying places please tell us where you live, its clearly so perfect we need to visit

Edinburgh 😂

mynameisbrian · 13/05/2021 11:13

Cornwall - dissappointed with my trip there, brighton and btw I ive in London and love it but have never liked Brighton.....

IrmaFayLear · 13/05/2021 11:13

“Nothing to do except walk around”

I think you had better avoid most of the world, then. You are clearly an “action person” so would be best suited to organised activities rather than cultural pursuits, or, you know, just looking at a place.

Another place I'd love to visit. Especially Holyrood. I've heard only good things about Edinburgh

notacooldad · 13/05/2021 11:22

I love most of the places mentioned on here!
Even the Trafford Centre is good if you time it right. Its my nearest Selfridges and John Lewis!
I can't believe people say things like the whole of the North West or Scotland. They must be saying it for a reaction or a bit dim.

Peregrina · 13/05/2021 11:23

DB did not like Blackpool when taken to see the illuminations - "there's nothing to see but lights", he said.

CounsellorTroi · 13/05/2021 11:27

I’m another one wondering what you were expecting to do in Portmeirion other than just see it?

NaughtyNell · 13/05/2021 11:29

Mintymabel

Also I'd like to see the underground vaults

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 13/05/2021 11:29

I love most of the places mentioned on here!

Well, someone has to rate them for them to be overrated Grin.

CHISistoast · 13/05/2021 11:29

@FatherBuzzCagney

St Albans. Grew up there and watched all the life drain out of it as the money moved in. Soulless dormitory town that kids itself that the old bits in the centre mean it has some character. A million estate agents and mid-price chain restaurants but it took 20 years to re-open the only cinema because culture: who the fuck needs that? If the Daily Mail was a town it would be St Albans. The only point in its favour is that Harpenden is worse: mogadon in bricks and mortar.
I went to school in St Albans and lived in Harpenden, we had moved from the NW and thought this was swinging London... It wasn't.

I'm really feeling pumped about our trip to Brighton in summer. Ahem.

castemary · 13/05/2021 11:35

I think the thing with Brighton is that it is so crowded, expensive and dirty. If hardly any tourists went, it would be in the underrated thread.

Flowerlane · 13/05/2021 11:36

Honestly can not believe how many times Isle of Wight appears on here we love it there as do many people we know. We usually go at least once a year Grin

IntermittentParps · 13/05/2021 11:36

Hay-on-Wye. An armpit of a place. Wasn't there for the festival, just an ordinary weekend, early autumn. Things were closed apart from one very mediocre pub. Lots of busy roads and nothing much to see/no nice areas to stroll around.

Brighton is seedy and dirty. Barren-feeling somehow.

Used to work in Edinburgh. Shit restaurants (almost never had a good meal there) and found the people (and yes I mean people living there, not tourists) overwhelmingly up themselves and 'too cool for school'.

The Peak District is beautiful though. This is 'grey and dreary'? Confused

Love the people complaining about the moaning on this thread Grin.

The concept of this thread is moaning. What were you expecting if not to moan (and read the moany accounts of others).
