Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Manchester, Liverpool, the whole northwest really.
Scotland, at least the southern half. The north is quite nice.

NursePye · 13/05/2021 08:53

Am utterly delighted to say that I have lived my whole life in three places that have been described as "shitholes" on here!!Grin

Funnily enough I think that those three places were and are pretty nice.

Clearly I am completely deluded. Grin

Manchester, Liverpool, the whole northwest really.

Whilst I personally love both Manchester and Liverpool, I can understand why some people wouldn't. But how on earth can you dislike the whole of the North West? Where else have you been?

LifeAfterBreastCancer · 13/05/2021 08:56

@Lovemusic33 I found it too busy and dirty and was distinctly underwhelmed by the beach.

Also have to say Whitstable and Sandbanks weren't great either.

Wales....now there are nice places in Wales but a couple years ago we went and drove from south to north. I just find it all very grey, the buildings, the towns and the weather.

London...maybe because I live in the middle of nowhere so I find everyone in London seem so stressed and in such a hurry. London gives me a headache.

Totnes Devon.....was really looking forward to it last year, was told it was like Glastonbury but nicer, the shops were disappointing, although the town was pretty it wasn’t really worth the drive to visit.

Westward ho....also disappointing, there’s not really much there.

We had our honeymoon at Westward Ho! you forgot the exclamation mark in it's name. We had just bought our first flat and money was tight, and then we got an unexpected bill, so we booked a flat above the entertainment complex at Braddocks. It rained on and off for a week, well it was August, and then, Elvis Presley died. The caravan park was full of aging Teds, carrying the Daily Mirror with tears in their eyes. All entertainment was cancelled and for the rest of the week we had Elvis impersonators, and people getting up to sing their favourite Elvis song, this was way before Karaoke has been invented. Yes, there is not much at Westward Ho! but it holds a soft spot with us, and we are still together 44 years later. Oh, we booked it as the name sounded interesting, and the price was right. We had also hired a mini, which was a novelty for us then, and spent the days visiting Devon tourist spots.
poorbuthappy · 13/05/2021 09:03

Portmeirion.
We didn't even take the kids knowing they'd be bored.

Little did we realise that we'd be bored.

But totally recommend the slate mine / zip line / general area Betws-y-Coed.

All the people on here slaying places please tell us where you live, its clearly so perfect we need to visit

Fitforforty · 13/05/2021 09:06

@SuziQuatrosFatNan

Northumberland is good for non drivers. Berwick's on the main east coast line and you can get buses to lots of day trip type places from there like Alnwick and holy island etc. The bus goes along the coast so lots of nice scenery.
I love the train journey from Durham to Edinburgh. It’s beautiful.
Maves · 13/05/2021 09:08

The Peak District is beautiful. For me Cornwall-awful especially Newquay dog shit everywhere, dirty nappies left on beach. Stupidly overcrowded beaches. Only good thing was lost gardens of heligan.

Devon is next worse only nice beach has no sand! but sea was lovely.(plus £5 for the pleasure)
Went to Dartmouth met the rudest people serving in a cafe, and was told by an elderly local to "move out of her way some of us have to live here" yes some of us are bringing economy to your town love"

All other beaches manky red sand, full of dogs when they are dog free beaches.Feral kids everywhere! It makes me laugh when people want to "live the dream" and move to Devon and Cornwall it's not all that. Give me the countryside any day.

Where I grew up has been mentioned several times, and I agree it's overrated in general. It has some less known areas that are wonderful, but I'd be damned if I'm going to share them here Grin. The locals should be able to keep some things to themselves.
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 13/05/2021 09:10

Thankfully where I live has only been mentioned a couple of times, and people have been fairly complimentary! Nicer than the Lake District apparently, but 'not enough footpaths' (although I don't understand this as there are loads).

Maybe that means it's not 'rated' enough to be overrated though!

Brindisi32 · 13/05/2021 09:10

"Isle of Wight. It was like a giant Brexit retirement village. They sold Golliwog memorabilia in tourist shops. The beaches were shit. It was like a giant version of Rhyl...."

Ah yes some folk i knew called it 'the pile of shite' 😂

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/05/2021 09:11

Even on the back of this I’m still really looking forward to our trip to north Wales next month. I don’t care if it rains, we would never plan a weather-dependant holiday in the U.K., that’s a mug’s game. We are used to holidaying in Iceland, Faroe Islands, Finland and Transylvania so clearly the weather isn’t a big factor. We have been missing our adventures abroad big time but I’m still holding out hope for a smashing North Wales trip Grin

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 13/05/2021 09:11

I love the train journey from Durham to Edinburgh. It’s beautiful.

Possibly the nicest stretch of train line in the UK, just stunning.

I've never been up through the West Highlands by train, and I suspect that might be just as good.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 13/05/2021 09:12

It's a pity to hear Warwick Castle has gone downhill. I visited as a child and it was great. That was a long time pre-Merlin though....

Ihaveoflate · 13/05/2021 09:13

Glastonbury (the place not the festival) - not sure what I was expecting but it was really strange and a bit depressing; really not a place I'd go to seek spiritual enlightenment!

Oxford - I really love it but it's not what I though it was going to be; normal high street with chain stores and all a bit bit drab, definitely not all dreaming spires

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/05/2021 09:13

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand same, I held it on a huge pedestal as a child! I have visited as an adult though, out of season in January, and I thought it was still pretty good.

Yorkshire. (I'll get me coat)
Melitza · 13/05/2021 09:14

St Ives. And the parking costs

mabelandivy · 13/05/2021 09:15

Brighton - overpriced, pretentious and dirty.

NaughtyNell · 13/05/2021 09:15

Brumboo

Where i live is frequently mentioned in the property section on here, usually derogatory. Fair enough if people have actually visited the place but why do people have to be so bloody nasty. Just don't ho back again, I'm sure they'll be doing the locals a favour. Many good points and places where I live but as you say you would only know that if you lived here,

NaughtyNell · 13/05/2021 09:17

Queen

Never had the the pleasure but I'd like to . I really want to visit York and the Dales

Melitza · 13/05/2021 09:17

@TheQueef Yorkshire has everything though.
Leeds City, spectacular moors, Old castles, brilliant coastline, gorgeous villages.

Brindisi32 · 13/05/2021 09:17

Manchester centre was depressing. Five/six storey high buildings made it feel very enclosed and dark.
