Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

@OssomMummy1

I wonder why people waste their life by visiting stone henge? I went to visit my cousin in Bath by road from Whitby and he took me to Stonehenge. I was wondering what am I supposed to do watching some stones arranged as if a kid has forgotten to clean up after its play.
My nan lives a few mins drive away and has never been she refuses to see ' a bunch of pointless stones' lol
catwomanhatwoman · 13/05/2021 07:42

Cardiff- my God.

Adultasd · 13/05/2021 07:46

Well I know where not to go this summer although OP needs to wash out her mouth saying about the Peak District. It's beautiful.

Surfingsister · 13/05/2021 07:48

I know I know! A Coldplay gig.

I would take a lot of these comments with a pinch of salt TBH. Some of them say more about the poster than entire areas of the UK that they have comprehensively explored and not found a single part of it to like 😂

We aren't allowed to say the whole of London, but people are ok with saying the whole of Cornwall? Confused

For a start the north and south coast are totally different from each other in terms of scenery, beaches and grottiness.

Ok, Newquay is a bit of shithole but Fowey, Charlestown and the roseland/lizard peninsulas are absolutely stunning.

For me it's most cities. I hate city breaks (with the exception of liverpool which I quite liked)

Birmingham - shithole

London - bloody awful place. Completely over rated. I won't be going again I'm happy to say.

Leeds and Manchester- grey sprawling horribleness.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/05/2021 07:54

@FizzyPink

Oh dear, we’re booked to go to the Isle of Wight in a few weeks and this is the second thread it’s been slated on Confused

My contribution is the Cotswolds. You have to drive a lot to get around and there’s not really very much to see in each village. Plus the crowds make it pretty difficult to see anything anyway.

Don't panic, DD went there a while ago and loved it - said it was beautiful. She really enjoyed seeing red squirrels.

I can't stand crowds, which puts me off pretty much anywhere in season. And London all year.

I was most underwhelmed by Snowdonia. I lived somewhere with proper mountains as a kid, and on a school trip we were promised proper mountains in Wales. They're not. They're very pretty, and they have grown on me, but they were definitely mis-sold to 12 yr old me.

@SuziQuatrosFatNan

Edinburgh is the original corner of a foreign field that's Forever England.
No it certainly isn’t. It’s the capital of Scotland.
wewereliars · 13/05/2021 07:56

WTF is wrong with Cardiff?

GelfBride · 13/05/2021 07:56

@Inextremis

Dungeness. I have never seen so much shingle in my life. It's like a wasteland.
To be fair, I can't see anyone overrating Dungeness!
Lovemusic33 · 13/05/2021 07:57

Wales....now there are nice places in Wales but a couple years ago we went and drove from south to north. I just find it all very grey, the buildings, the towns and the weather.

London...maybe because I live in the middle of nowhere so I find everyone in London seem so stressed and in such a hurry. London gives me a headache.

Totnes Devon.....was really looking forward to it last year, was told it was like Glastonbury but nicer, the shops were disappointing, although the town was pretty it wasn’t really worth the drive to visit.

Westward ho....also disappointing, there’s not really much there.

mermaidsariel · 13/05/2021 07:59

Never been anywhere in Wales that I have liked. It seems to rain constantly, is very run down and depressing. Sorry.

Birmingham and Bristol

The Cotswolds are very pretty but have no soul or character. Every village looks the same .

Newquay.

Notjustanymum · 13/05/2021 08:00

Both Land’s End and John O’Groats had an awfully 1970’s exploited feel about them (At the Pay Paradise, they put up a parking lot, kind of feel) when I last visited. Everything was over-priced and tawdry, and you had to pay to get your photo taken by a signpost stating the miles to your hometown Etc.
I guess it’s the commodification of what should be a natural landmark that grated on me, and I remember thinking that I wished they were a lot less “amusement park commercial”.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/05/2021 08:00

Yeah Wales. Lovely but the weather is even worse than Glasgow.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 13/05/2021 08:03

I also find people writing places off because of the weather pretty ridiculous.

It rained when you were there so it's shit?

Firstly, you're not made of sugar. You won't melt with a bit of rain.

I can confirm that it does not "always" rain in Wales, the Lake District, the Peak District, Scotland, Cornwall.

Lovemusic33 · 13/05/2021 08:05

Just adding..

Isle of Wight....bumpy roads, run down in places. Though I haven’t been for a few years, took the kids when they were small and went to black gan chine? (Not sure if I spelt it correctly), it was awful, everything looked run down and broken and the site we were staying at was awful.

thepeopleversuswork · 13/05/2021 08:05

Something exceptionally mean-minded and spiteful about this thread.

Cliches, ignorance, passive aggressive put-downs and snobbery.

How delightful.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 13/05/2021 08:05

I was wondering the same, it's lovely (when it's not raining - which is sadly somewhat often).

I think there are a lot of places I think are overrated because they are packed with tourists, eg Bath. I bet all of these places are lovely at the moment.

Totnes is ok - I go there fairly often. It doesn't have the student vibe anymore though and if you don't like dogs don't go because they are everywhere.

Frenchdressing · 13/05/2021 08:06

The Cotswolds

Lovemusic33 · 13/05/2021 08:07

And I love Cornwall but lands end was a bit disapointing.

I have been to Wales a few times...it rained each time we went and last time we went it snowed and rained all week to the point the DD’s (teens) refused to get out the car when we visited anywhere 🤣

NaughtyNell · 13/05/2021 08:09

There's an awful lot of Philstines on this thread.....

Devon. Though I love the surrounding counties.

Glasgow. Totally over-rated. Rough and chavvy.
Says the person who has clearly never visited.
StopTryingToSellMeYourBollocks · 13/05/2021 08:13

Bournemouth, it isn't bad outside school holidays or in winter (although they have built it up the square far too much with new restaurants that will probably be closed after COVID), but in the summer on a hot day it is just fucking awful. You can barely move for the people and spend most of your day queueing for something. I much prefer the grotty neighbouring town as you can get around much more and there are still decent beaches, plus you have easy access to the Purbecks, which are lovely. You still have to get up at 6am to find parking space/avoid being in traffic for hours in any of these places though, which sort of ruins everything.
