Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Tynwald. Blink and you miss it.

CatAndHisKit · 13/05/2021 02:54

Nice to see Liverpool hasn't been mentioned (or if it was, definitely nothing like the frequency of many fancy places) - I keep meaning to go.

Gothichouse40 · 13/05/2021 02:59

Im really surprised that Edinburgh is on this list, during pre-Covid summers it was packed as in couldn't move for visitors. As for the person saying Glasgow was rough and chavvy. I cannot think of a friendlier city than Glasgow. I love the Kelvingrove area, the park, the Galleries. Maybe people just see places differently.

Sounds like you traipsed down to Kynance at high tide. I went there a lot as a kid when it was fairly quiet and full of Germans (weirdly), but haven't been back for about 15 years as it gets too crowded now -it's a fairly smallish beach

Insert1x20p · 13/05/2021 03:13

I did see someone say Worthing is the new Brighton the other day which could lead to some disappointment on a day out.

Ha - I was born in Worthing. The town centre is not great (albeit neither is Brighton these days and I think a lot of smaller towns across the UK are really suffering because it takes time for the planners to accept that in person retail is dying and they need to put something else in the centre to create a hub). That said, it's got a nice position, right between the sea and the South Downs and I imagine it's a pretty pleasant place to live, especially if you like outdoor stuff. My DC really like the pebbly beach. People are generally friendly and unpretentious there. They have a great Parkrun Grin.

Saltyslug · 13/05/2021 03:14

Bath - a bit up it’s own arse

London - people love it but it wouldn’t be more than a couple of days sight seeing to me.

Saltyslug · 13/05/2021 03:16

Lake District and Cornwall - nice but not enough to have the stupid numbers of visitors

Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 03:55

I'm surprised posters are putting whole counties and, in some cases, whole countries. These places won't be uniform (unless if really is that awful). North and South Devon are quite distinct from each other and Devon's tourist spots like Dartmoor, Torbay, Dartington, Exeter, Saunton Sands, Clovelly, Plymouth, Buckfastleigh, etc, are all very different places and experiences. I just happen to mention Devon as I'm from there.

We love Cornwall, especially the Lizard Peninsula, but Newquay is a dump with some lovely beaches nearby. Both Devon and Cornwall are pretty rural, so if you get wet weather, you'll be pretty limited.

I think rubbish weather will effect your perspective on how you view a place.

I was disappointed by:

The Lake District
North Wales (can't remember exactly where, have erased it from my memory), but it rained the whole week we were there, so didn't see it in it's best light!
Sherwood Forest
Lundy
Portland Bill

We drive through Sandbanks occasionally and, yes, it is pretty underwhelming.

Can't believe anyone would put the Isles of Scilly!

Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 04:00

MoppaSprings

definitely Cornwall, no redeeming features. Filled with unwelcoming, slightly backwards people

Harsh

And racist (unless you mean the tourists Grin)

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 13/05/2021 04:10

@Pret50

St.ives. recently visited there and left after a day.
We were disappointed with St Ives too. We returned a couple of years ago and it was just so crowded with an overwhelming smell of cheap chip fat......

The beach is beautiful, Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden and Tate St Ives were well worth a visit and the sea views and scenery were stunning. But the centre of St Ives was full of screeching people chomping on kebabs and wearing 'kiss me quick' hats.

No not racist in the slightest. My experience of the people there, not of a particular race.

Obviously it can’t be everyone that lives there, but it was a very insular place.

Mandalay246 · 13/05/2021 04:59

Wow people - you're not exactly selling a holiday to the UK to those of us who don't live there!

redcarbluecar · 13/05/2021 05:00

Sometimes the disappointment of a place correlates with the hype that surrounds it, especially where something is billed as a kind of ‘party town’ with guaranteed fun. Hence can see why Brighton disappoints.
For similar reasons (and sorry it’s not in UK I know) I found Dublin disappointing when I first visited. It’s not the place’s fault, it just didn’t instantly provide the ‘mighty craic’ I was expecting. Have got to know it better on subsequent visits (as you would with a big city) but still prefer Belfast.

Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 05:14
Hmm
Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 05:14

We were disappointed to with Dublin. Seemed very dated, not that clean and people not overly friendly. Wasn't helped by a man we were chatting with in a restaurant telling us to talk quietly as we might be targeted with our English accents. Assume he was winding us up, but my friend then became paranoid for the rest of our stay which clipped our wings somewhat.

joystir59 · 13/05/2021 05:20

Weymouth and West Withering are lovely.

SpeakingFranglais · 13/05/2021 05:25

I love lots of these places!
London has so many amazing bits, lots of grot, but I genuinely think it a city up there with the best in the world not just uk.
York, I live close so can avoid peak times
Lake District, of course it rains, if if there were no rain there would be no lakes and no Lake District.
Oxford and the Cotswolds, beautiful buildings.
Trafford Centre! During the week and away from Christmas, admittedly.
Edinburgh, although I think I made a connection with it the third time I went.

I must have awful taste, off to Cornwall this summer, I will prepare to be disappointed 😉

joystir59 · 13/05/2021 05:25

Scarborough is truly dreadful. Don't bother if you haven't been, especially don't bother if you are coming to stay in a holiday let in my street where I need to park my car Grin

Mothership4two · 13/05/2021 05:34

*@Mandalay246 ^

There are loads of beautiful places in Britain, but many are popular in the holidays and so get very busy. And, of course, British weather doesn't help!

I don't quite understand the comments about Scotland/Wales/Kent/Cornwall/Devon/etc - what all of it? How can you compare all the Scottish islands, lochs, cities and towns, beaches, ski resorts, golf resorts, the Highlands and the Lowlands? It's a bit like saying you don't like food.

QueenVikki · 13/05/2021 05:41

Peterborough? The only rating it consistently has is as one of the worst towns to live in England so it has never been overrated.

MuddySocks · 13/05/2021 05:46

@Southwestrunningmum

The countryside

What???

English countryside is beyond stunning

MuddySocks · 13/05/2021 05:47

London is a hell hole.

Yuk.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/05/2021 05:59

I lived in East Devon for a few years and found that overrated to be honest although it's nice for a holiday. Living in a seaside town I saw more unemployment and drugs than I did living in a city, it was depressing.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 13/05/2021 06:00

Cornwall, just a long drive to get there and it rains! the heatwave was always last week
