Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

definitely Cornwall, no redeeming features. Filled with unwelcoming, slightly backwards people.

pinkhousesarebest · 12/05/2021 22:45

Haven't read the whole thread but I am assuming someone has said the Giant's Causeway in NI.

hugocat · 12/05/2021 22:45

@Proudboomer

Cornwall
Why? Never been but looks amazing
Puffinhead · 12/05/2021 22:47

Broadstairs.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/05/2021 22:48

@MuddlingMackem definitely don't go to Whitepark Bay on your way to Ballycastle around the coastal route...awful having a gorgeous beach all to yourself Wink And don't stop at The Bothy for coffee or buns and bread from Ursa Minor Bakehouse in Ballycastle. All a bad idea Grin

@Morgoth

Brighton, Bristol, Edinburgh and most of London
Love all of these.

The tourist experience in Edinburgh is awful. I feel sorry for them: trudging round believing the guff the tourist guides make up for them..ripped off left right and centre...seeing the crappy Dungeons or dressing up in a polyester kilt and ginger wig from China sold by the local cartel that owns all the shops in town. Hardly any locals live in the Old Town now because they’ve been forced out and it shows. It’s embarrassing.

Timeisavirtue · 12/05/2021 22:50

@category12

I feel the same, I just don’t see what’s so interesting about it.... an arrangement of large stones in no interesting manner.

But surely if you think meh it's just a bunch of stones, you wouldn't bother going in the first place? What else were you expecting?

I didn’t intend to go, we were driving past and DP got all excited and we just had to stop... 😞

@SmidgenofaPigeon

I went back to Matlock Bath fairly recently as I really liked it recently. There were about 1000 bikers roaring along, motorbikes absolutely everywhere, I don’t know if I was just unlucky or if it’s all like that. And the woman in the pump room museum cafe thing refused to let me use the loo even though I was bursting and pregnant and offered to buy a chocolate bar but she insisted ‘sitting customers only’. The cable car was all sold out. Fish and chips are big business there even though it’s miles from the sea, and they were definitely overrated.
I'm local & that sounds standard for a weekend to be honest. Matlock Bath is Derbyshire's version of the seaside hence the arcades & chip shops. It is also well known for its popularity with bikers! Lovely and quiet there on a week day though. Obviously I'm biased so disagree with the comments about the Peak District. Chatsworth house, Dovedale/Thorpe cloud and Hope Valley/Castleton are worth a visit.

Wales. Dank, over priced cottages. Rain, rain and rain. Ditto Dorset.

Keepyourdistance000 · 12/05/2021 22:53

Southampton. Dirty, run down, notorious traffic lights everywhere and traffic jams, shitty roads and one way system in city centre, unpleasant people, drunk students, unsafe.

SmokedDuck · 12/05/2021 22:53

@MadMadMadamMim

For me, anywhere that's busy and overcrowded. Which is a pity, because I like History and I'm interested to see places like Anne Hathaway's cottage, the Bronte Parsonage and Beatrix Potter's cottage.

And almost all of these places are swamped with tourists.

You can put a tick next to almost any town/city/county that is popular and I'll probably avoid it simply because I hate crowds.

I think this is a huge factor. I did a touristy UK trip some years ago, about half places that were "destinations" and half places I went for personal reasons which just had normal people living in them. The latter were overall much more enjoyable - still nice little traditional villages and towns with some local museums or interest points, but not the impression that they were done up mainly for outsiders, you could talk to the people who lived there, and didn't feel like tourists outnumbered locals.

Lightswitchesoffatnight · 12/05/2021 22:58

I love North Yorkshire and The New Forest. What is wrong with you people? 😂

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 12/05/2021 22:59

We stayed at Matlock Bath about 30 years ago. It was like Skegness without the sea. We were out the back of the Heights of Abraham and there was constant traffic noise from the road below. Not somewhere I would recommend.

Abracadabra12345 · 12/05/2021 23:01

@castemary

I liked Southend and the pier.
I love Southend, especially the quieter beaches, but also the vibe of the place
Jaxhog · 12/05/2021 23:01

I agree with Edinburgh - apart from the zoo, which is brilliant. Glasgow was much more interesting.

hesterstanhope · 12/05/2021 23:01

Stonehenge was good when it was on the side of the road and you could pull over, have a look and walk up if inclined.

Now that there is a massive booth and you have to pay and then walk for ages or catch a bus (and contend with instagrammers) it’s an expensive hassle.

secretllama · 12/05/2021 23:02

London. It's not even in my top 5 UK cities, just don't get the hype, sorry!

PhillipPhillop · 12/05/2021 23:03

I'm off to the IOW tomorrow! Can't wait! Packing up the camper as we speak. A whole week of coast walks and re-visiting old haunts. You lot are so hard to please.
Re Stonehenge - how can a ring of standing stones be overrated? Were you expecting a Disney parade and fireworks?

Any north east seaside towns, Whitby, Scarborough etc
They're North Yorkshire not the North East
