Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Edinburgh a city of great beauty and variety with a cultural heritage like no other. You must have no soul

I agree. I wonder what people expected that they didn’t get.

Littlecaf · 12/05/2021 22:03

I was underwhelmed by Whitstable. Pretty but meh. Over priced.

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 12/05/2021 22:03

@Sunny68 in Brighton, we walked the kids through the main green and the whole place smelt of weed. We saw lots of discarded needles. We were approached repeatedly by junkies asking for money. Young women begging who had been notably destroyed by drugs. I genuinely haven't experienced that in the other places you have listed - it just felt very 'out in the open'.

House2home21 · 12/05/2021 22:04

@MintyMabel I go a lot as we have friends there and it's lovely but, I kind of always expect more...sorry it's difficult to articulate.

riceuten · 12/05/2021 22:04

But in Paris or Rome I wouldn't know where to go either

Do what I did and ask the hotel staff ! We've had amazing meals in Paris on that basis. Of course nowadays we have Tripadvisor...

480Widdio · 12/05/2021 22:06

North Yorkshire.

Mind you I love Dungeness which several have said they hate.Loved the eeriness of it.

Bigwave · 12/05/2021 22:07

People who are saying London's crap or shopping on Oxford Street is rubbish, I bet you go to there once a year, by coach, to do your Christmas shopping. You get off the bus, having sat there for five hours, stagger up and down Oxford Street half a dozen times, have lunch in Nando's and wonder why it's the same as back home. That's because you're doing it all wrong

it was my local high Street for years. hate it.

60schild · 12/05/2021 22:07

@tanguero

Hebden Bridge....rain-sodden, vertiginous, exhaust-fumed, self-righteous.
I was about to post Hebden but you've summed it up much better than I could!
purplebatbear · 12/05/2021 22:09

London. It's shit, dirty, crammed, full of pretentious wankers who are very rude and generally a hateful place.
Birmingham. Also shit. Just depressed me.
Blackpool. Dirty and chavvy
Cambridge. Love it to visit but hated living there. Trying to get to work or Uni was a nightmare, road system is such a mess and tourists just constantly in the bloody way.
Shrewsbury. Really really boring and felt like it had lost its sparkle

Sae123 · 12/05/2021 22:10

The Lake District.

Manchester.

Nodal · 12/05/2021 22:10

I love London. But I wouldn't go anywhere near Oxford Street.

Shedbuilder · 12/05/2021 22:11

I'm with you, Minty Mabel. Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities in the world. History from medieval to modern laid out, small enough to walk around, good galleries and museums, great restaurants and bars and theatre and a friendly atmosphere. Admittedly the weather could be better but one can't have everything.
WhipperSnapperSteve · 12/05/2021 22:17

I did however live just outside the quieter parts of the Peak District on the Staffs/Cheshire border, which is nice and people don't really know it, because the Peak District is Derbyshire.

Beautiful isn't it, and access to very many nice places.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 12/05/2021 22:18

@FizzyPink

Oh dear, we’re booked to go to the Isle of Wight in a few weeks and this is the second thread it’s been slated on Confused

My contribution is the Cotswolds. You have to drive a lot to get around and there’s not really very much to see in each village. Plus the crowds make it pretty difficult to see anything anyway.

We went to IoW for our last summer holiday (and we live on a beautiful part of the Scottish coastline) - we loved it! Loads to do, great beaches, tea shops, brilliant transport, can't wait to go back.
Tubs11 · 12/05/2021 22:18

Whitstable...I don't get the fuss

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 12/05/2021 22:19

@katy1213

Center parcs for sure - it's just a posh Butlin's. But how can you not like Edinburgh?
I've never met anyone who didn't like Edinburgh 😭 apart from grumpy weegies obvs 🤣
HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 12/05/2021 22:21

@Spied

Durham. Amazing Cathedral and close to Northumberland and Newcastle but as a City in its own right it's really grim. Very little to do in the City itself and all the shops are closed down or charity shops.
Now I love Durham. However my OH lives there and he said the same now it's just empty shop after empty shop. Take out the cathedral, the fact it's a city and it's near by to Northumberland and Newcastle and you've got Bridlington. Full of charity shops, Turkish barbers and take aways and shops that have closed down oh and no decent shops for 40 miles
Arghmyhip · 12/05/2021 22:21

Exeter is a dump, I agree. Lived there for a few years and couldn't wait to get away.

It just feels a bit run down and far away and shit.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 12/05/2021 22:21

Blackpool.. shit hole
Durham...boring shit hole
Rhyl ... next level shit hole
Cardiff... absolute shit hole

SoftSheen · 12/05/2021 22:22

Well I love Cambridge (live there) and Cornwall (holiday there).

My most overrated place? Legoland... Hmm

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 12/05/2021 22:24

Haven't read the full thread so I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned Exeter? I had such high hopes and was disappointed.

I also didn't like Edinburgh.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/05/2021 22:25

Cornwall tends to be a bit local place for local people. Luckily Devon, Somerset, Dorset etc are just as lovely.

Yorkshire.. various reasons. City people in Yorkshire are the rudest I've ever come across. Give me London any day!

Lake District is just cold and wet.

FedNlanders · 12/05/2021 22:26

New forest
Isle of Wight

HunterHearstHelmsley · 12/05/2021 22:26

Oh and Cambridge! I had to work there for a few months. It was like a crappy town centre with a lot of cyclists.

goose1964 · 12/05/2021 22:28

I'm really surprised to see Weston-super-Mare on here. It's not that it's nice ,it's not , the town centre has lots of closed shops and it's one of the most deprived town centres in the country. I just didn't think anyone rated it. I'll also add Burnham-on-Sea to that list , it's so bad people go to Weston-super-Mare to get away from it.
