Overrated places in the UK

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

Never been but my impression of Bath is that it’s essentially a theme park for tourists.

LINABE · 12/05/2021 20:53

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

Brighton, absolute over priced shit hole with aggressive rich people who dress like they've just been in a secure psychiatric unit for 20 years. Homeless people and drugs everywhere.Purports to be "green" but all of their rubbish is burnt in Newhaven down the road - another shithole poisoning everyone in the town.
Hahahahahah!!! I bloody LOVE this!!! So true!
IlCommissarioMontalbano · 12/05/2021 20:54

@Proudboomer

Cornwall
Totally agree!
StaffRepFeistyClub · 12/05/2021 20:54

@Shinyandnew5708 - finger on the button! Elmbridge is dull and uninspiring

Christ - I thought I was the only one! A day out is a trip to Squires Garden Centre Grin They were all getting excited about Men Shed's which is basically an OAP drop in centre for retired men; there is nothing for younger people

pigeonpies · 12/05/2021 20:54

All those saying Stonehenge, what were you expecting?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 20:55

I went back to Matlock Bath fairly recently as I really liked it recently. There were about 1000 bikers roaring along, motorbikes absolutely everywhere, I don’t know if I was just unlucky or if it’s all like that. And the woman in the pump room museum cafe thing refused to let me use the loo even though I was bursting and pregnant and offered to buy a chocolate bar but she insisted ‘sitting customers only’. The cable car was all sold out. Fish and chips are big business there even though it’s miles from the sea, and they were definitely overrated.

Northernmum100 · 12/05/2021 20:55

Cornwall, I really don't get the appeal. Went once and didn't like it, went back again under duress and still didn't get it. Overcrowded and over rated.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 12/05/2021 20:56

OMG @Surfingsister you too!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 12/05/2021 20:56

*I really liked it ages ago that should say

Violaaa · 12/05/2021 20:56

What a fucking miserable thread Confused

I love Brighton, London, Bath, Cornwall because there's lots to see and do!

I think you all just love a good slagging off session Grin

SunnySpills · 12/05/2021 20:56

Marwell zoo

Byllis · 12/05/2021 20:56

@wewereliars

Tourists to any capital city will tend to stick to the touristy areas becase that's what their guide books tell them about. I used to be amazed in Covent Garden etc when I saw droves of them go to places like the Angus steakhouse or somewhere equally souless and grim when there are fantastic restauarants minutes away. But in Paris or Rome I wouldn't know where to go either.
Yes. My DH’s sister and brother-in-law (Italian) came back from a week in London enthused about everything they’d seen, but stated as a fact that all the food there is terrible. I think they’d gone with such a fixed opinion about the good that they probably didn’t even bother doing any research. I imagined them dining in Angus steakhouses every evening.
BananaDaiquiri · 12/05/2021 20:57

Brighton. I know it's been said loads of times already.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 12/05/2021 20:57

Def Stonehenge.
And Oxford Street is just the same shops over and over again.

TurquoiseDragon · 12/05/2021 20:57

@mellicauli

We decided to do a detour to the home of the pork pie, Melton Mowbray. Oh dear. Not the idyllic village the name suggests.

We went into a fancy pork pie shop and bought a pork pie...only to realise the same ones were for sale round the corner in Morrisons.

The ones in the shop are baked on the premises, not in the factory that supplies the supermarkets, we always buy ours from the shop.

But I wouldn't come to Melton as a tourist spot. It's just a town.

P999 · 12/05/2021 20:58

I'm a Londoner, and definately pussed off with house prices. But love it and would never leave. Never bored, ever. But some areas massively overrated and leave me scratching my head. Fulham is mostly ugly housing, crap transport for the most part, polluted, football stadium, really boring housing for most of it, crap schools, and one of most expensive areas to live in. Depressing.

Surfingsister · 12/05/2021 20:59

If everyone hates Brighton so much can they all stop coming please! It's rammed! I prefer it when you all stay away in the winter.

Staffy1 · 12/05/2021 20:59

Can't believe someone said Snowdonia, it's lovely.

DanielODonkey · 12/05/2021 21:00

Oh god Yes, Bath. Due to all my reading beforehand I was expecting to make meaningful eye contact with at least two eligible bachelors of £30,000 a year and to have a proposal made to me on a walk in the countryside.

None of that happened. So over rated.

(But in all honesty I loved the city regardless. Even being fleeced for a tour round the Jane Austen experience where earnest P&P fans talked about her life. I bought over priced two badges in the gift shop and almost wet myself in mirth. Fucking loved Bath.)

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 12/05/2021 21:01

@Chunkymenrock

Crickhowell. Used to be great but now it's like a bloody mini London in the school holidays, when they all flock to their second homes.
Crickhowell? Presuming not the Welsh one, or I missed out massively years ago Shock
SweatyBetty20 · 12/05/2021 21:02

Going macro here - Notting Hill Carnival. Deafeningly loud, stank of weed, and felt like it was about to kick off every five minutes. I lived in London and took a friend who was visiting - we lasted an hour and then went to the pictures to see Coco Before Chanel in Islington so we could sit in the peace and quiet.

LakieLady · 12/05/2021 21:02

@SmidgenofaPigeon

I don’t think it’s really even possible to say ‘London’ because you should be specific. What bits? They’re all different 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m saying Brighton. Wanky and grimy.

Brighton would be pretty high on my list, too!

Dirty, high crime, loads of deprivation and squalour and the nice bits just aren't nice enough to outweigh it.

And parking is outrageously expensive.

cheeseychovolate · 12/05/2021 21:02

The Lake District, terrible if it's rainy and you've got young kids, there's nothing to do in the rain.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/05/2021 21:03

Oxford and Cambridge.

CounsellorTroi · 12/05/2021 21:04

@thefishthatcouldwish

Tenby but only because it’s too busy for me now.
Tenby is beautiful but has been ruined by stag and hen parties.
