Photo ID needed to vote? Please no.

The government are bringing in (photo) voter ID meaning you'll need to show your passport or driving licence when going to cast your vote.

By all means reform the postal voting system but not this. Not everyone drives or goes abroad and this will bar many people from voting. Driving licences and passports are not cheap.

What's this got to do with my question, you stated that everyone between the ages of 18 to 25 have ID because they all need to buy alcohol

I said the majority. Not everyone. I didn't 'state that everyone...'

It's an important difference.

If you're going to assert that "all of them" need ID to drink (despite only around 2/3rds drinking) then perhaps you need to reassess your view that "all of them" will have passports.

You need to brush on your deabting skills. Quoting back things that weren't said puts you on a hiding to nowhere.

They need to do something, I know a candidate who collected cards from people not planning to vote and arranged others to go! Found out and barred

And who were they voting for?

SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 09:21

And yes, I am aware that there is a growing movement of 'straight liners' among the young, who aren't necessarily motivated or compelled by their religous culture, who are rejecting alcohol. But you said:

*I wonder if there are any minorities who don't drink alcohol and therefore don't have such a need (for an ID card.)

Which is why I replied:

So you mean Muslims, basically?

and you replied:

What's this got to do with my question?

Erm...you brought minorities into this. Not me.

Sorry, my question above at the bottom of my post was to minniemomo forgot to tag.

DynamoKev · 12/05/2021 09:28

@blueangel19

Yes, not ID’s here and some do not want them. Personally, I have nothing to hide so if they issue some sort of ID for free I would not have a problem. They should be required for the NHS too.
So no ID = no treatment?
DynamoKev · 12/05/2021 09:30

Everyone saying we should have “free” compulsory photo id. It will not be free, it will cost billions in taxes.

SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 09:40

Depends on the treatment and the circumstances. Same as the rest of the flipping world.

SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 09:41

Actually while we are on the subject, passport fraud is huge too. Fake passports are everywhere. The sooner we move to fingerprinting and iris recognition as part of border security the better.

MoonlightFlitwick · 12/05/2021 09:42

@shivawn

Really shows the level of poverty in the UK if you have people who can't afford photo ID.
Yes.

I cannot drive due to lifelong disability so have no licence.
I could not afford a passport.
Atm I am struggling to afford bills/food as am waiting for the DWP to process my PIP claim. It has been delayed "due to covid". Because the previous PIP was awarded by tribunal I had to reapply as though a new claim, so they are not paying me during the wait period.
An organisation that provides my care offered me a food parcel this week. That wasn't humiliating at all.Hmm
I know many people who cannot afford photo id and don't have it. Most people I know could never afford to go on holiday so don't have passports.
If it's not provided freely to all, then it's yet another way the government making it clear how very little the poor and disabled matter in a capitalist society.

Do you have to be registered to see the GP or not treatment? I think yes. You need to proof who you are and where you live. May be another place where you can do with an national ID?

SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 09:44

I know many people who cannot afford photo id and don't have it.

Which particular photo ID are you talking about? So as an alternative to a passport or a driving licence what sort of photo ID can currently be purchased and how much does it cost?

EvilPea · 12/05/2021 09:45

I had to renew my driving license recently. I had to pay more because i don’t have a passport (because I can’t afford it, ironically).

It’s not just that it’s knowing someone who can sign your photo.

This was thought up and passed by someone who has never had to think about the cost of having a passport.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/05/2021 09:45

I totally agree. I've had terrible trouble trying to open a back account for my friend, as he has no photo ID.

blueangel19 · 12/05/2021 09:46

And what are taxes for? What an excuse.

One thing that makes me laugh on this one Is the fact they take council tax and utility bills as gospel, yet you just ring up for them and tell them your name.
MoonlightFlitwick · 12/05/2021 09:49

@pheebumbalatti

I think if you're too useless to sort out a passport you probably shouldn't be allowed to vote.
Cheers.

Passport and driving licence. Don't know of any others. I think someone said above you have to pay for a driving licence?

Hmmm the chip in my passport has my fingerprints loaded on it and they do check fingerprints at border crossings.

It’s not an excuse - I am just pointing out that blithely saying “it should be free” doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be paid for. This country doesn’t have a stellar record on large government IT projects but I am sure a scheme to make everyone have an ID card would be absolutely fine.
SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 09:58

Moonlight but the article does say:

'The government has previously said people would be able to apply for a voting ID card from their local council, although this would have to be done before polling day.'

I think the argument that this would suppress voting from anyone remotely motivated to vote is a spurious one, but I do think these cards absolutely must be free and easy to obtain and there should be a huge outreach programme to make sure that marginalised or disadvantaged people are able to access them.

I don’t need an expensive extra government ID scheme to sign up at the GP. I would prefer we spend the money on actual healthcare not more bureaucratic nonsense we don’t even need.
flashbac · 12/05/2021 10:02

@Heatingsystemwoes

In any case, if voter ID is so important that's its needed now, as opposed to, you know, more important things like reform of social care as promised by Boris Johnson, isn't this implying that the Brexit vote and the 80 seat majority for the Tories is built on dodgy elections?

I’m sure the government can cope with two things at once. Voter ID and Social reform.
Introducing voter ID is hardly going to wipe out all government resources and put a stop to the social reform agenda.

As for past elections. Who knows who actually turned up and voted? Nobody was required to show ID.

You've missed the point. There was NOTHING in the Queen's speech about social care reform despite Boris Johnson's promises.

Plan Is this a new thing then? Will I have to option to do it when I next renew mine, or is it now mandatory on all British passports? If not then it should be.

There are a lot of claims on this thread about various types of identity based fraud being “huge” or “increasing”. Not one of the people making these claims has posted a single shred of evidence to back those claims.
