Really shaken up. Did I do anything wrong here?

For past two years I have done the school run, I park on a street near the school. There is a detached house with a driveway and a patch of grass next to the driveway. I park in front of the patch of grass, not blocking the driveway whatsoever.

Once I drop my child at school I get collected by my workmate (we are cleaners so have company car) and then work till 3 until I have to return for school run and car.

This morning as I was getting out of the car the lady in the house came charging out, she said 'can you stop parking your car in front of my house?' I said 'it's a public road' and she said 'you park out here 5 days a week, if you refuse to move it I should make you aware that I will be cutting my grass today and any damage to your car is not my responsibility' said with a sarcastic smile on her face, she then walked back into the house shaking her head.

I've left the car but worried now she is going to damage it.

Am I being unreasonable parking it there? It's a public road and not on her property at all.

I am really struggling to understand how on earth someone parking a car outside your house can be rude, irritating, annoying or piss you off.

Butterbeers · 10/05/2021 19:10

Someone used to do that outside my house for 8 hours a day, until she finally found somewhere else to plonk herself. It might not be illegal, but it’s bloody annoying.

spaceghetto · 10/05/2021 19:10

Yanbu. I live on a school road with no parking, people park outside my house, as they are entitled to do. I knew what to expect when I bought the house!

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/05/2021 19:13

You’re not doing anything wrong but I would think you were being a dick.

OhTheIronyOfItAll · 10/05/2021 19:16

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius I understood she was parking next to, not on the garden. It’s just the way op described it as a patch of grass next to the driveway, rather than acknowledging that it is the house owners garden, that I thought was odd.

MusicMenu · 10/05/2021 19:16

A member of staff from the school across the road parks outside my house everyday. It's never occurred to me to feel aggrieved about that but I would like to give him his cigarette ends back.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/05/2021 19:17

I see - sorry for misunderstanding, @OhTheIronyOfItAll. Blush

Well no one told our village. Not a non-perfect lawn as far as the eye can see. We would have a riot on our hands if anyone left their lawn for a month.
Cipot · 10/05/2021 19:21

Some people think they own the whole street.

Besom · 10/05/2021 19:22

It's a space on a public road. It's not her space. I find it really weird that anyone would feel entitled in this way. Don't understand it all. There are different worlds aren't there?

Eh? Is this really a thing?
supadupapupascupa · 10/05/2021 19:27

All she needs to do is park her own car there, wait for school to start and then move it onto her drive.

LizzieW1969 · 10/05/2021 19:33

No one owns the kerbside parking space outside their house unless it's written that they do.

I can never understand why some people don’t realise this?? It’s the public highway after all.

I agree, but then it wouldnt bother me in the first place

Lol, MN really does love a parking thread Grin
Not read all the thread but I think whilst you're technically not doing anything wrong if it's a public road, why does it have to be outside the same house, all day, every day?
That's bound to get on somebody's tits.
Can't you mix it up a little bit, move a bit further down the road some days or something?

JMJTHEWEEDONKEY · 10/05/2021 19:36

It would annoy me if someone constantly parked right outside mine all the time.

As others have stated it could easily be causing her issues to get in and out or leaving no room for visitors.

Not real the full thread so no idea if a diagram has been produced! But you get two types of people - some that are bothered by it and ones who aren't at all!

I used to have that happening constantly and it annoyed me and the driver would have the cheek to complain about my children playing in our garden on the grass as they were concerned about their car being damaged! If someone happened to be that concerned they wouldn't park there!

sunglassesonthetable · 10/05/2021 19:36

A work colleague of mine does this. Utterly pathetic.

The woman in question has a four car drive!
Divebar2021 · 10/05/2021 19:44

It would irrationally annoy me... I have no idea why. My neighbours visitors always park outside our house and not his too.... no idea why but that’s irritating too.

I know right. Bloody hell, are people really this petty?! Seems from this thread many are.

Or say they'd damage the car - @Devlesko upthread said she didn't understand drivers being confused at their cars being keyed if they park in a perfectly legal space that happens to be near someone's property. Seemingly they think it's ok to break the actual law in retaliation for something not against the law...

Unreal.

RubyFowler · 10/05/2021 19:48

@BonnieDundee

I know you are legally in the right but can you not see how annoying it must be to have the same person park outside your house all day 5 days a week?
Genuinely not. What is annoying about it?
