AIBU?

Really shaken up. Did I do anything wrong here?

For past two years I have done the school run, I park on a street near the school. There is a detached house with a driveway and a patch of grass next to the driveway. I park in front of the patch of grass, not blocking the driveway whatsoever.

Once I drop my child at school I get collected by my workmate (we are cleaners so have company car) and then work till 3 until I have to return for school run and car.

This morning as I was getting out of the car the lady in the house came charging out, she said 'can you stop parking your car in front of my house?' I said 'it's a public road' and she said 'you park out here 5 days a week, if you refuse to move it I should make you aware that I will be cutting my grass today and any damage to your car is not my responsibility' said with a sarcastic smile on her face, she then walked back into the house shaking her head.

I've left the car but worried now she is going to damage it.

Am I being unreasonable parking it there? It's a public road and not on her property at all.

Just buy a front and rear dashcam. Any damage call the police - they are very likely to press charges when there is photographic evidence

OP started another thread about UC Funding and her university attendance, hasn't come back to that either. Make of that what you will.

You haven't done anything wrong OP but I can see why it would annoy someone.

I have parked in residential roads for work but have always tried to use different spaces so I'm not consistently outside the same person's house. I know that legally I was totally allowed but I do understand why it frustrates people also.

@PattyPan

Obviously she doesn’t own the road but why can’t you just drive home and be picked up from there? It’s probably annoying having you parked there all the time so there’s nowhere for her visitors to park.

^ this. I think it’s ok to park in front of other people’s houses on occasion, but you are using the spot in front of her house like it’s your own space! What about her visitors/workmen etc ...

I’d actually have parked my car there to stop you doing this

But toddle off sweetie. I'm the "over invested" one remember.

And you're the one being chained to MN by me.

I don't think dashcams are on record unless the car engine is running, are they?

Alternatively she could have got her phone out and started videoing and ask the woman if she'd like to repeat the veiled threat to commit criminal damage on camera? And 'if not, that's fine, I understand, but now I have a video of this conversation outside your house, I do hope you will re-think what you just said to me.'

Yes they are. They aren’t connected to the car - they have their own batteries and you can get ones that record

What you are doing is perfectly legal... But she's got a point.
Leaving your car there, every day, while you go off somewhere else (you don't even work at the school), is a bit cheeky.

That being said, I think if you choose to live right by a school, some weird and "wonderful" parking is part and parcel of the area, especially if the school has got a small/non-existent/staff only car park.

How so, if it's not blocking a driveway, is on a public road and the nearest house has a four car drive? How is that cheeky?

That is the question that has continually failed to be answered over 40 pages of this thread!

Don't you think it's just annoying? Someone parking outside your house every day of the week and leaving their car there all day every day?

I'd be conscious of doing something like that and would at least try and switch up the houses I was parking outside, rather than using the same exact space every day all through the year.

If it's a public road, they aren't obstructing my drive way and said drive way even has room for four cars then no! I cannot fathom why on earth it would be annoying, I genuinely can't and nobody has explained why it would be other than essentially saying 'well it just is.'

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Not really. I am a 'Trade' and often have to park and walk to the house I am working in. The most I will do is circle round to see if someone moves, but I don't expect a nearby free parking space in some areas.

And plumbers etc just park up as they like regardless!

Any tradesperson who visits my house wants to park straight outside, which I completely understand as they will be lugging heavy tools.

I usually park outside and move the car for them....

Why is working at the school more worthy? Surely anyone, literally anyone can park there?
