That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

Now, if you'd posted something about Pip dying, you'd probably be lynched for cruelly raising people's hopes.

I like Freddy. Also I am still not over the trauma of Nigel falling off the roof and what would Elizabeth do?

Seems almost disrespectful of her to be referring to a real person's death as a 'spoiler'.

billybagpuss · 10/05/2021 11:06

She’s got one hell of a shock ahead if she’s been watching the crown

I remember calling mum when I heard that Freddie had died, in the morning news. Mum liked a Saturday lie in in those days.

The news about him having Aids had come out the day before and I'd not had a chance to chat with mum since then. Mum had been a massive Queen fan, and adored Freddie.

So I call mum, and the convo went like this:

"Hey mum, gave you heard about Freddie?"

"Yes, he's got Aids."

"Not anymore, mum, he died overnight."

BANG! Phone got slammed down by mum.

In hindsight, that's funny to my family, but I simply wasn't thinking when I replied and the words just slipped out.

And a group of us in my family went to see the film when it came out, and we were watching it the day after mum's funeral. So when the end credits rolled, we raised our glasses for mum, as the song, Don't Stop Me Now, was playing. We'd sent mum on her final journey with that song.

Re: Sixth Sense......I saw that coming just from seeing the trailer, small boy whispers "....I see dead people" to BW character...gotta be dead then hasn't he?.

Still watched it since everyone had gone on and on about the AMAZING SURPRISING STUNNING plot twist, furious that it was just the extremely obvious, blatant trailer give away. :o

I also am not allowed to watch any CSI's with dd or Casualty's with my mother for the same reasons...I am a film plot savant.

I do think it’s a bit crap to say a spoiler if you see someone actually watching or reading a particular movie/book, but I don’t see any harm in giving away spoilers in general conversation about a book or movie that’s been out for ages.

However I do agree that saying that a real life person died thirty years ago is not a spoiler!

lifeissweet · 10/05/2021 11:48

There was a bloody enormous tribute concert!

Surely she is joking. This is ridiculous unless she’s very young.

My friend's boss said this when she told her she was watching the Chernobyl dramatisation that was on a little while ago. She responded "Don't tell me what happens as I'm going to watch it!" Grin

To be fair to your friend in terms of 'specifics', there were a lot of things about Freddie Mercury I hadn't been aware of until watching that film eg his family background , his long running friendship with the 'love of his life', Mary. And I suppose we don't know how much of the story shown in the film is absolute fact and how much is cinematic licence.

And regarding Titanic, although I obviously knew it sunk (!) I had expected that both Kate and Leo's characters would survive and have a happy ending, so I was a bit 'I hadn't expected that' at the end of the film, with DH very much Hmmat me Grin

I’d reply “OK, I won’t tell you what happens to Brian May then Sad

shinynewapple21 · 10/05/2021 12:49

What has happened to Brian May @BlackCatShadow ?

I'm normally against spoliers. But anything real life, particularly such a famous person is not a spoiler.

I did once laugh my socks off at a team effort to give a spoiler to one particularly entitled person who was constantly giving out spoilers with a lot of condescension (If you were that interested you would have seen it already being one of his comments). He couldn't watch the Phantom Menace on it's release because of work, then he had to be at a wedding at best man - a good day and a half had gone by. So the person videoing his speech exacted revenge, with a group as they knew he was the kind of guy to want to watch his whole speech to see how he did. It was well executed and deserved.

LizzieW1969 · 10/05/2021 13:11

It's one thing having a general conversation and mentioning the Father thing, and someone not knowing. That's no one's fault. Bit walking into a movie and asking of one of the central plot points has happened yet is just plain spiteful/stupid.

But I knew that Darth Vader was Luke’s father long before I saw ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. It was only a surprise when it was first shown at the cinema.

minniemomo · 10/05/2021 13:17

I had a work friend who was most annoyed that the trailer for titanic showed it sinking, she didn't realise it was a real event. Some people have very limited general knowledge

Laserbird16 · 10/05/2021 13:24

Yes, it was very unfortunate when Freddy Mercury was attacked by a shark...live on stage! What a way to go

BlackCatShadow · 10/05/2021 13:29

@shinynewapple21

What has happened to Brian May *@BlackCatShadow* ?
Nothing really. He has grown old and rich and seems happy, but it would annoy the hell out of the woman. 😂 Yeah, I’m mean!
BlackCatShadow · 10/05/2021 13:33

My mum always tells me spoilers, so I get my revenge by giving her fake spoilers. Like telling her that Voldemort is Harry Potter’s real father.

shinynewapple21 · 10/05/2021 14:38

Ah OK @BlackCatShadow I misunderstood. Thought I'd missed something .

After watching one of the more recent Star Wars films a colleague and I stopped to get pizza before heading home. She said (whilst waiting for take away) “that was totally unexpected that xxxxx happens” a guy in the pizza place was suitably annoyed. He was going to see the film immediately after his food. Oops.
