To say that being a vegan is no better for the environment than being a meat eater?

Unless you eat only home grown, locally sourced products?

Obviously some people are vegan because they don’t like the idea of using any kind of animal products. But all too often people say that they’re vegan because “it’s better for the environment when this is categorically not the case.

Lots of fruit/veg have to be imported which is actually worse for the environment because it involves pumping man-made substances into the environment.

Products like almond milk are terrible for the environment because e.g. it takes 1600l of water to produce 1l of almond milk. Coca-Cola is practically a green product in comparison…

If people want to be vegan, why not just say you want to be vegan. Coming up with reasons such as “it’s better for the environment” which are just rubbish and laughable is only going to increase the amount of people who don’t take vegans seriously.

There are twats who break rules in every industry but it wouldnt serve your purpose to mention the many farmers who do follow the rules and have high standards of animal welfare, would it.

clpsmum · 06/05/2021 20:16

Say what you like doesn't make it true.

I'm a meat eater and know that it would be hugely better for the environment if I were vegan

FTEngineerM · 06/05/2021 20:20

I agree @theneverendinglaundry but as long as people will buy a whole fucking chicken for £2(!!!!!!!) a whole animal and all that it’s life encompassed for one fifth of the national minimum hourly wage (!!!!!!) then it’ll keep happening. It’s gross.

There are alternatives to awful practices, I’m lucky, I live somewhere we’re there’s more sheep than people. That comes at a cost though, it’s not £2 for a whole chicken. Not even just for the breast.

How do you "humanely" slaughter an animal that does not want to die?

It has a survival instinct just like you. Would you be happy to offer yourself up to these famers to be killed?

Firsttimecatlady · 06/05/2021 20:21

@1Morewineplease

Im just a bit concerned at the amount of land, in particular rainforests in South America, that's been given over to soya production.

The meat industry, though, needs a massive rethink.

A huge amount of that soy is used as animal and fish feed, and also in none edible products like cosmetics. A very very small amount goes into ‘vegan’ products. You’re right, soy production can have a massive impact on rainforests- especially if it’s not regulated or grown responsibly. But it’s driven by ever increasing demand for meat, no veggie burgers.

Vegans arguing among themselves and trying out vegan each other is one of the funniest things on the Internet.

😂

I'm not serving any purpose, just pointing out that high welfare does not give any guarantee that the animals are well treated.

I'm glad that there are people who treat their animals well but animal cruelty does happen. And I imagine every incident doesnt get reported

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 06/05/2021 20:27

@nanbread

Ducks/chickens/cows/sheep of varying breeds? Without eating them or using them for other bi-products there is literally no reason for them to exist.

Did a real person with an actual brain write this?

There's no reason for animals to exist, unless we eat them?

Have you seen an intensive chicken farm OP? Pretty sure they'd rather be extinct than live through that hell, so overfed they can't stand up, never seeing daylight, covered in their own faecal matter (which is, LITERALLY, sprayed into the environment by the tonne in the USA), alive for an average of 6 weeks

Domesticated ducks, chickens, cows and sheep ALL exist because we use things they produce: eggs, meat, leather, fleece and so on.

So no, if we didn't use what they produce, a handful might survive as pets or for decorative purposes (silver-laced wyandottes are VERY pretty). They wouldn't survive as discrete breeds in the wild. Most of them would die pretty damn quickly. Some of the more primitive types would live long enough to reproduce, and the hardier (and more primitive) of their offspring would in turn survive, but you'd kiss goodbye to the Cayuga, the Light Sussex, the Jersey and the Welsh Mountain.

S*oya has bad effects on eostrogen and fertility
*
If you are concerned about fertility you should ditch cows milk. Not only for the oestrogen content it may or may not have. But for the fact that the milk in most modern systems is collected through long plastic pipes made of PVC, which contain phthalates. Phthalates are fat soluble and leech more into heated liquids, so fatty warm milk is ideal for them.

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

It had a horrific death too of that you can be sure.

Not necessarily. The UK does have animal welfare laws relating specifically to slaughter with the intention of minimising pain etc.

Oh gawd. As much as I wish this were true I have seen enough exposè videos to argue otherwise Sad a lot of horrible stuff goes down in slaughter houses
ElphabaTWitch · 06/05/2021 20:32

Let’s all eat a plant based diet. Given that our bodies and teeth are made for eating meat it’s no wonder vegans look so fucking unwell and sickly. Try to prove me wrong but it won’t work. I just hear ‘ bla bla bla whinge whine vegan earth mum bla’. You will not change my mind.

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 06/05/2021 20:33

@Hellohello765Actually, some of us do need meat to survive. There is no way I can get enough protein in my diet to maintain a healthy weight any other way. I struggle to maintain my 8 stone, I'm often less, that's my max and at 5 foot 6 that makes me quite underweight.
I can't eat nuts or beans.
I'm constantly anaemic even on iron tablets.
My diet is already carb heavy so please don't suggest bulking it out with that and I see a dietician so I don't need advice.

Yes some vegans do try to force their views on others. Here are a few examples of my recent experiences. Often social media warriors....

  1. I commented on a picture of a burger my friends takeaway had posted, someone replied to every comment on that post telling us we were disgusting and we should not eat animals. She had to block him and delete all he's comments.
  1. I shared a photo of myself and my daughter at the farm feeding the lambs and got loads of abuse of a vegan and told I should be ashamed of myself 🙄
  1. I was shopping in a meat aisle in Tesco and a vegan protestor shouted at everyone looking at the meat and scared them out of the aisle. He wouldn't let anyone look at the meat and had to be thrown out be security.

All of these are this year.

I have no issue with anyone who follows any diet, except when they try to force me to follow theirs.

But, with respect, so what? It’s the Scottish elections today, I’ve had absolutely loads of people trying to get me to vote for their party. If you’ve made your mind up, who cares?

Add to that all the vandalism and harassment farmers and butchers put up with. Real crimes, not the hurtful comments the poor widdle vegans occasionally get.

SnackSizeRaisin · 06/05/2021 20:38

I'm just boggled that there is such a massive focus on the evils of meat when we're still burning fossil fuels like there's no tomorrow

A large part of the evils of meat is the fossil fuels though. The production and transport of feed, whether soya or grass based, plus the transport of the animals to slaughter and then to the shop, and the cold storage required. Plus loads of other smaller things. It's not as if the animals appear in a field, eat nothing but grass, and are eaten directly from that field.

Greenmarmalade · 06/05/2021 20:39

YABU (I’m not vegan)

FTEngineerM · 06/05/2021 20:39

Six silly, it’s highly unlikely that the planet is in this state because of a minuscule percentage with your condition/conditions. You can probably relax a little and just sit back and watch.

It's irritating.
So is politics. Sick to death of people telling me who they're voting for and why I should do the same. I don't care. Just like I don't care what you eat and you shouldn't care what I eat, because, respectfully, it's not your business what I eat.

Why comment then Hmm
SnackSizeRaisin · 06/05/2021 20:44

My 100 Lleyn ewes and 180 lambs must be a figment of my imagination.

Fair enough you are a farmer, but one who clearly has no idea how other farmers operate. It doesn't change the fact that creep feed (soya based) is commonly fed to lambs, ewes are often given hard food too, and preserved grass (produced using a tractor) is commonly fed to ewes and lambs, on the vast majority of UK sheep farms even if not on yours.

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 06/05/2021 20:44

I can’t imagine a time where people won’t share their opinions. If that’s what irritates you, your life must be a constant source of annoyance.
