To have made DD give back the vending machine freebie?

DH thinks I am.

I allowed DD to buy some crisps from the vending machine at the swimming pool after her lesson. I paid for one packet. It dispensed two. I made her give the second one back to a nearby member of staff.

The leisure centre staff look after the vending machines and could restock it, so it would have felt dishonest to walk off with both packs. I wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't obvious who to give it to.

Was I right or a right mean mother?

YABU to post about it. Molehill and mountain come to mind.

KM38 · 05/05/2021 06:34

@Cissyandflora My kind of person 😉🙌🏻🤣

OP, you’re definitely unreasonable 🤣

ItsGotABitOfPink · 05/05/2021 06:38

@daisypetula

At the moment with COVID they probably were told to bin them.
Good point.

I would have kept them. Never happened to me but my brother once put in money for some polos ( cheapest item and only money he had ) and when he put his hand in to get them a pack of wotsits were in there. He obviously took both and was overjoyed.

Well at least your heart was in the right place and your DD will think of her mum as being upright and honest.

The most cringeworthy, embarrassing mum ever is more likely

1forAll74 · 05/05/2021 07:19

I would have kept the extra bag of crisps. Did you not notice the sign on the vending machine, that said, buy one,get one free.!

Dionysus78 · 05/05/2021 07:56

Happened to me with a Yorkie the other week. I was on a station with my 6yo, and we pretty much had a party right there and then.

soditall56 · 05/05/2021 10:51

@BlowDryRat

Blush oh dear. The staff there already think I'm a nutter for various reasons.
Must know the backstory now you've mentioned it...
smittenkittten · 05/05/2021 10:55

Op I do admire your honesty, and you’re setting a great example to your child......but no, I would have kept.

Chloemol · 05/05/2021 11:02

I would have done what you did. It’s a good lesson to teach them. Be honest at all times and you will have no issues

JellyBabiesFan · 05/05/2021 11:07

Thats a bit extreme OP.

BlowDryRat · 05/05/2021 11:49

I think people are being really harsh!! I too would have ( guiltily!) pocketed the extra but you sound really lovely and ultra honest ( I have handed in money found in shops etc so consider myself honest but you are exceptionally so!!) - your child will not be eternally harmed by missing out on bonus scoffables and you could always tell them about the responses here ( age dependant) - but they will never be in doubt re your moral compass ; and if in doubt always best to go with your conscience. I’m in awe actually!

Tessabelle74 · 05/05/2021 17:26

I'd have kept both and said 10 hail Marys as penance Grin

LittleMissMe99 · 05/05/2021 17:29

I work in retail in a place that has vending machines. They are run by a third party here. But they know they occasionally do this and take it into account. They assume people keep any extras that fall out. I'll gurantee the staff ate them

Lizzyblue · 05/05/2021 17:33

Wow are you always that boring?

marktayloruk · 05/05/2021 17:42

You were totally out of order. Set your kids an example of seize every advantage that comes your way.

purplebunny2012 · 05/05/2021 17:47

YABU and daft. I've never thought twice about having the 2nd item to fall

Skyla2005 · 05/05/2021 17:50

Kept them yabu

Cissyandflora · 05/05/2021 17:52

Very good point.
UsedUpUsername · 05/05/2021 17:54

Lol the staff will have appreciated your gift 😅

bemusedmoose · 05/05/2021 17:55

Morally you did the right thing. But as someone has been on the end of many failed dispensings (last train home, freezing cold, last money and starving and the machine won't give me my damned Cadbury!!!) I would have kept it. I know I'm wrong, I know technically it's stealing, but I'll be honest - that freebie is all mine!

Bimblybomeyelash · 05/05/2021 18:05

I think of myself as a very honest person but it would never occur to me to hand back the crisps in these circumstances!

NoMoreBananas · 05/05/2021 18:11

You really are mean beyond belief. I feel so sorry for your DD. Mother of God, catch yourself on
I could never forgive myself if I did that to my child

Stoppissingonmyheather · 05/05/2021 18:13

Well I would deffo have kept crisps scoffed them and chatted and laughed about what a touch that was but yeah actually you did the right thing teaching your child honesty and all that we could all learn a lot from you (but probably won't a free packet of crisps is a free packet of crisps after all)
