To have made DD give back the vending machine freebie?

DH thinks I am.

I allowed DD to buy some crisps from the vending machine at the swimming pool after her lesson. I paid for one packet. It dispensed two. I made her give the second one back to a nearby member of staff.

The leisure centre staff look after the vending machines and could restock it, so it would have felt dishonest to walk off with both packs. I wouldn't be bothered if it wasn't obvious who to give it to.

Was I right or a right mean mother?

I'd have kept it as payback for all the times that the machines have failed to dispense my snacks and I've lost my momey.

Kokosrieksts · 04/05/2021 21:29

I would have kept it. I bet the member of staff just ate them 😂

JimBobNoJob · 04/05/2021 21:31

I remember using a vending machine in a job that I had not long after I left school, there was a glitch and it gave me two sandwiches/rolls for the price of one. Someone used it after me and it did the same, Word spread round the canteen pretty quick and an orderly queue formed everyone took a turn until that particular machine was empty.

Did I feel guilty? No not at all, it’s swings and roundabout where vending machines are concerned!

MammaSchwifty · 04/05/2021 21:34

The whole point of the vending machine game is that it's a roll of the dice... sometimes you get what you wanted, sometimes something entirely different, sometimes you get two, and sometimes you walk away with nothing....

notanothertakeaway · 04/05/2021 21:37

I'm in the minority, but YANBU. You paid for one packet of crisps, so you should receive one packet

Exhausted4ever · 04/05/2021 21:39

Everyone seems to be missing the most important part of this thread. There are chip vending machines?!?

Princesspickle777 · 04/05/2021 21:41

YABU another vote here for not giving them back, I didn’t think anyone did this.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 04/05/2021 21:42

I think you were mean. I would’ve let my children keep the extra bag.

KizzyMoo · 04/05/2021 21:43

I thought you were lucky if you got 2. Rarely ever happens and they make soooooo much profit. I'd defo keep it.

RozHuntleysStump · 04/05/2021 21:44

Bizarre

MamaWeasel · 04/05/2021 21:44

@exhausted4ever do you not have vending machines for crisps/chips, sweets/candy, chocolate and soft drinks in public places like swimming baths and hospitals? In our swimming baths there are vending machines for swimming goggles and caps and things too.....

KizzyMoo · 04/05/2021 21:44

It's like when the grabber picks up 2 toys at the win every time machine. You've only technically paid for 1. I wouldn't give 1 back.

DustCentral · 04/05/2021 21:48

Ahhh the universe threw you a freebie and you gave it back Grin I’d have taught DD to snigger evily, look both ways, and then smuggle extra crisps under her arm pit. I might not be 100% ethical but you’ve gotta enjoy those small good luck moments. Sounds like swimming owes you a karma rebate anyway lol Grin

User657849 · 04/05/2021 21:49

Chances are some time in the future the machine will fail and give you nothing and I bet the staff won’t be able to help.

I would have kept it.

AMillionMilesAway · 04/05/2021 21:57

I wouldn't give it back.
Many a vending machine has "eaten" my cash, so I guess it all works out

Figgygal · 04/05/2021 22:00

Free vending machine items are life goals for kids
Fuck it it’s amazing as an adult too
Ywbu

Pricklykaktus · 04/05/2021 22:01

Good for you for teaching your DD honesty.

Mumtofourandnomore · 04/05/2021 22:05

Not along ago my DD bought some skittles from our leisure centre vending machine and the skittles behind NEARLY fell out too - I would say I they were 80% hanging over (but correctly so, as we’d retrieved the one we’d paid for). My daughter was gutted to miss out on a double. She said ‘oh no, it’s stuck, it’s stuck’ whereupon the lady behind reception ran over, apologised on behalf of the machine Confused, opened it and gave the second pack to DD, revealing a gaping hole in the line of remaining skittles, obviously.

That’s the only time I felt a bit of an ethical vending machine twinge Blush, but we ate them anyway......

Cattenberg · 04/05/2021 22:08

Why are vending machines so expensive? Their overheads are low, they sometimes swallow your money and they’ve killed dozens of people by falling on them.

This thread brings back a shameful memory. When I was about nine, I saw another little girl put her money into a vending machine. The spiral thingy pushed a chocolate bar forward, but not quite enough for it to fall. The little girl went off, perhaps to fetch a member of staff. In the meantime, I put my money in and got both her chocolate bar and mine. And ate them.

oldshoeuk · 04/05/2021 22:12

Normally, absolutely would have kept. With kids in tow I become an angel and would have probably returned them. I'm crazy about setting an honest example for them, which is probably a very guilty conscience.

reallyisthisallthereis · 04/05/2021 22:15

@BergamotMouse

I used to love it when that happened. I'd never thing to give it back.

I bet the member of staff ate them Grin

This definitely
ChubbyMsSunshine · 04/05/2021 22:15

@BlowDryRat

Ok, IWBU and need to:
  • buy DD another packet of crisps (and then make her give them to her brother Wink)
  • hide from the staff even more than usual
  • make some sort of sacrifice to the gods of the vending machine to restore order to the cosmos.

All good?

OP gracious in defeat, I like your style Grin

For point (3) why not repay the karma by leaving 80p in the vending machine for the next person? As well as getting your DD another bag of crisps obvs.

Homehaircuts · 04/05/2021 22:16

Poor Op you are getting a hard time for being so honest. I would of kept it but my DH would of given it back especially in front of the child Grin he is a goodie two shoes like you though. I find it very endearing.

CervixHaver · 04/05/2021 22:17

@Pinkpaisley

The staff looked at you like you had two heads, looked at one another with dumbfounded looks, and then tucked into their treat. They don’t have they keys to unlock the vending machines.
"Tucked into their treat" HmmConfused

Honestly, the overly descriptive language some people on this site use is just cringeworthy!

CorianderBee · 04/05/2021 22:17

I don't think I've ever known anyone who gives back free falls. Isn't it half the fun that you might get two?
