AIBU?

Important kitchen sink poll

Really dredging the bottom of the barrel with lockdown conversation topics, I was discussing with a friend how we'd been looking round a house and the draining board was on the wrong side of the kitchen sink. It was on the left, which is stupid, because most people will want to use their right hand to take the wet crockery and put it on the draining board, particularly as it is slippery, and having the draining board on the right is the most efficient way to do this.

My friend insisted that their draining board was on the left, but not only that, all draining boards they had ever known were on the left and that this was fine.

So which side should the draining board be on by rights?

YABU: Left hand side
YANBU: Right hand side (obviously)

Agree it’s got to be on the right. EVERYONE I know has a right hand draining board. I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t.

I’m in the South West if that has any bearing Smile

I am watching Dinner Date and all I can focus on is where the draining boards are.

Bizarrely , one was on the right and , contrary to what you state, she twisted her body and put the plates on the rack with her left hand. Becsuse the sponge was in her right hand. Bad for her back that. I rest my case.

Kitchen, utility and wee kitchen - all left. My mum’s kitchen and utility both left and our last house also left.

you are clearly in the wrong. 51% are saying left

Benchy some more sensible people have just voted and it’s back to 50:50.

I genuinely can’t believe it’s this undecided. There must be a disproportionate number of left-handed posters on AIBU.

Thanks, Jan, I do feel that this time I’ve found a topic of real importance.

I am watching Dinner Date and all I can focus on is where the draining boards are.

Grin glad to see you taking the issue so seriously, piggy. I do wonder whether your contestant who was twisting her back was just rubbish at washing up.

We had ours put on the left but we're both left handed!

We have kitchen drainer on the right, utility on the left.

Never occurred to me that it made any difference, the kitchen drainer goes over the dishwasher, so couldn't be swapped without making a hole in the dishwasher to insert the sink.

Utility is designed around the fact the person making the kitchen worktop cut the hole for the hob in the wrong place, so we have repurposed that length of worktop with the sink in the hob hole.

I wash dishes at the kitchen sink and things like shoes in the utility and I've never been bothered which side I'm reaching on to put dry things.

@Mintyflesh

My life is flashing before me trying to visualise all the sinks I've ever stood at. I would say 95% had the draining board on the left.

Mine too, but I would say most of my sinks had the drainer on the right.

It clearly makes no difference to me as until now I hadn’t thought about it all or even noticed the change from one house to the next.

I am right handed , my drainer was on the left but when I had my kitchen refitted I swapped it to the right but this is because of the kitchen design .
The comer that the drainer is now in ( on the right ) was just wasted space before , no sockets anywhere near it and wall cupboards above it so nothing could really go there .
Now the drainer is there with the plates etc stored in the cupboard directly above it

I've known both. Can't say that I ever noticed a difference.

Mine is on the left and has been innebery house I have lived.

However, I'm a caterer and work in many many different kitchens... I switch all the time from right to left....

Not what you want to hear but but I think I have a pref for dirty dishes on right, into sink, clean drain on the left

Funnily enough, draining boards are not common in Canada. I have never had one. We have a double sink, with one side smaller. We have a rack thingy in the small sink that we place things to drain on.
