Important kitchen sink poll

Really dredging the bottom of the barrel with lockdown conversation topics, I was discussing with a friend how we'd been looking round a house and the draining board was on the wrong side of the kitchen sink. It was on the left, which is stupid, because most people will want to use their right hand to take the wet crockery and put it on the draining board, particularly as it is slippery, and having the draining board on the right is the most efficient way to do this.

My friend insisted that their draining board was on the left, but not only that, all draining boards they had ever known were on the left and that this was fine.

So which side should the draining board be on by rights?

YABU: Left hand side
YANBU: Right hand side (obviously)

I had mine on the left forever and 2.5 years ago we were getting a new kitchen my partner was at home supervising the kitchen fitters and the fitter asked him which side he wanted it on and he said the right!

I would much prefer it on the left, the house we are in the process of buying it's on the left!

Looubylou · 03/05/2021 16:34

I've seen a right sided one ever.

Looubylou · 03/05/2021 16:34

Never!

lonelyplanet · 03/05/2021 16:35

Mine is right as it's on the right. Left is definitely wrong for a right hander.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 03/05/2021 16:35

Mine is on the left, but as our entire household of five is left handed it's perfect!

Alsohuman · 03/05/2021 16:36

I chose to have mine on the left. When it comes to putting stuff on the draining board I’m ambidextrous.

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2021 16:37

@Exhausted4ever

I've never seen one on the right hand side ever
What?! I’d never seen one on the left before this.

Ours is on the right. I've had them on the left occasionally too though. It doesn't really bother me.

EggysMom · 03/05/2021 16:38

This house the drainer is on the left (previously house had it on the right). I like having it to the left, it gives me a good excuse to insist my LH husband does the washing up ...

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2021 16:38

I agree that having it on the left is right for a left-handed family.

For the majority which is right-handed, left is wrong.

Mine's on the left in this house. All other houses I've lived in were right. Prefer right.

4PawsGood · 03/05/2021 16:42

I’ve only had them on the left.

I think it’s easier to put clean dishes on the left.

andtheweedonkey · 03/05/2021 16:42

This house and the one before, both on the left.

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2021 16:59

@PrincessPeachh

Mine is on the right but I’d prefer it on the left. I use my washing up brush with my right hand, I then need to put the brush down and put the dish on the draining board with my right hand. If it was on the left, it would flow a lot easier and no need to keep putting the brush down!
I’ve considered the brush issue and wonder why you are not putting your brush down to rinse the plate of soapy water before putting it on the rack?

I'm right handed and dyspraxic, but it never occurred to me that EVERYTHING that is within normal arm length reach should be organised around those facts.

If you're that susceptible to dropping plates you'd probably struggle with it on either side.

AfterSchoolWorry · 03/05/2021 17:04

Doesn't matter.

Machines wash dishes!

RickJames · 03/05/2021 17:05

I had one on the left and it was good- cloth in my right hand, stack with the left.

I'm not a fan of draining boards though - they are unnecessary if you have a dishwasher. I just have a big square steel sink now. If I hand wash something I stand it on a dry tea towel until I'm ready to dry it.

DustCentral · 03/05/2021 17:06

I’m right handed.
Our is on the left.
Just having complete kitchen redesign done and I’m keeping it on the left.
Right hand is in charge of washing up. Left hands just helping put things on the drainer so barely any responsibility Grin

HopeHappy · 03/05/2021 17:08

I'd never even given this a second thought but am now massively overthinking it! My draining board is on the left but that does make sense to me as a right hander. I hold the item in my left hand and clean it with my right, so transferring stuff to the draining board is easier if it's on the left.

My sink looks like it could have been fitted either way round though. There's a sealed up tap hole on the opposite side to where the tap actually is.

SugarCrash1 · 03/05/2021 17:08

Ours is on the left. It only annoys me because the cutlery drawer is on the right.

dementedpixie · 03/05/2021 17:09

Mine is on the left

Kottbullar · 03/05/2021 17:13

All of ours have been on the right, but actually with our current set up it probably would have been a better use of space on the left.

luckylavender · 03/05/2021 17:14

Left. I chose it.

LostInTime · 03/05/2021 17:16

Ours is on the left.
Thinking back, we've only ever lived in one property with it on the right, in about thirty years together.
He's right handed, I'm ambidextrous, children are one Rhanded, one ambi.

Mintyflesh · 03/05/2021 17:18

My life is flashing before me trying to visualise all the sinks I've ever stood at. I would say 95% had the draining board on the left.
