Important kitchen sink poll

Really dredging the bottom of the barrel with lockdown conversation topics, I was discussing with a friend how we'd been looking round a house and the draining board was on the wrong side of the kitchen sink. It was on the left, which is stupid, because most people will want to use their right hand to take the wet crockery and put it on the draining board, particularly as it is slippery, and having the draining board on the right is the most efficient way to do this.

My friend insisted that their draining board was on the left, but not only that, all draining boards they had ever known were on the left and that this was fine.

So which side should the draining board be on by rights?

YABU: Left hand side
YANBU: Right hand side (obviously)

I honestly couldn’t tell you about anyone else’s kitchen sink though.

Ours is on the right. I am left-handed, DP is right-handed. The draining board was positioned where is works best on the island.

I’ve got access to several kitchen sinks, including one at work. Out of 5 sinks, 3 have left draining and 2 are right draining, so left wins for me.
However I really do not care which way the sink is in relation to the draining area.
In some places in Europe they do not have draining areas and use a cupboard above the sink.

@noblegiraffe

And left was really annoying and wrong, yes?

There can't be a right or wrong, it's like those stupid arguments about the right/wrong way to put the toilet roll on the spindle, it's somply a matter of preference.
Personally I find the right hand one annoying as I'm sort of left-handed!

On the left here, was on the right but got OH to change it to open the space up in our stupidly small kitchen.

Always had it on Left.. logic given to me by MAGNET salesperson was- A right handed person would have the taps etc on right and draining board on left to allow space between taps n dishes. I have lived inn rebuttal houses prior to buying n it was always left.

Mine's on the left but I'd prefer it on the right!

Kitchen has twin sinks with no draining board. I tend to wash stuff on the left and leave them in the right sink to drain.

Utility sink has a right hand draining board as it's above the washing machine.

I don’t currently have one, I use the dishwasher. But thinking back it has always been on the left. I think that is suitable for a right handed person as I would be holding the item with my left hand and cleaning / wiping it with my dominant right hand, so easier for my left hand to place it on the left when it is clean.

Mine is on the right, when we remodelled the kitchen it was the most important thing I changed. My previous home had it on the right too although my parents home had it on the left. I clearly didn't use theirs enough to get used to it. The kitchen fitter did think I was odd changing it from left to right though so left must be more common.

@HopeHappy

I'd never even given this a second thought but am now massively overthinking it! My draining board is on the left but that does make sense to me as a right hander. I hold the item in my left hand and clean it with my right, so transferring stuff to the draining board is easier if it's on the left.

My sink looks like it could have been fitted either way round though. There's a sealed up tap hole on the opposite side to where the tap actually is.

I do the same as you.

And yes, most sinks have two tap holes, so that you can fit them either way round, according to your kitchen’s configuration. Ours is currently on the left, but we are having it the other way round when we remodel to accommodate a full-size dishwasher underneath, rather than the slimline one we have now. So any inconvenience will be outweighed by having to do fewer dishes by hand anyway!

@Alsohuman

I chose to have mine on the left. When it comes to putting stuff on the draining board I’m ambidextrous.

Same here!

Ours is on the right but that was to make best use of the worktop space which was a consideration.

Draining board on the left, in the corner. If it were on the right it would take away counter space.

I think it depends on space / layout. Ours is on the left because there isn’t space on the right.

Every one I've ever seen has been on the left, with the exception of my left handed Nan, who had hers on the right.

Mapletreelane · 04/05/2021 08:10

On the right. I'm right handed and chose it. Flow of dirty dishes/rinsing washing up/loading dishwasher works beautifully for me.

I don't put everything in the dishwasher though. We have wooden knives, chopping boards/ tupperware/wine glasses / non stick saucepans that get ruined in the dishwasher.

Right handed, prefer the board to be on the left, it just makes more sense, I hold the item on my left so when it's finished placing it down on the left makes more sense to me.

@pigsDOfly

Mine is on the left.

Don't do a great deal of washing up as I have a dishwasher, but when I do wash up, being right handed, I wash the pan, or whatever, with a sponge in my right hand, rinse it under running water and put it onto the draining board with my left hand.

If the draining board was on the right I'd have to put the sponge down in order to put the pan on the draining board.

I'm with you on this one. I'd hate to have the draining board on the right. When I was in a council house, the council put in new kitchens and the original plan showed the draining board on the right and I kicked up a bit of a fuss and they changed it for me Grin

Mine is right as it's on the right. Left is definitely wrong for a right hander.

No it isn't, it's much better Confused

My ex MIl lives in the Pool. She is a scouser. She has her drainer on the left. I am a southerner and my drainer always firmly rooted on the right.

Now you mention it, i wonder if this is a north \South divide or party political? Who knew!

This could be the case; I've lived exclusively in the north and draining boards have always been on the left. I don't think this is the case now, though, as we're currently looking to move and been browsing online and I've actively been put off a house if I see the draining board is on the right!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the left. It’s just another of those right handed privilege things that I’ve never noticed because I’m a righty. It hadn’t even crossed my mind that lefties were at such a disadvantage until I met my ex. I’d never even considered the draining board thing. If I was still speaking to her I’d ask her.

Out of my current 3 kitchens, 2 have it on the left and the much older one has it on the right.

Can’t say I’ve ever given it much thought

I prefer it on the right. Ones on the left feel weird.

....For about a day until it's just the kitchen sink and I don't give it a second thought. It's only weird and wrong initially.
