Your baby's name is 'so weird' ...?

Due with our baby girl in just a few weeks. It took us a long time to pick a name that will flow nicely with the middle name as well as the surname and a name we both love equally. My nan texted me this morning and ask if we've picked a name yet so I told her that we have and told her the name we chose is Esmé. Her response was simply 'such a weird name'. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm gobsmacked and don't know what to say back. I know it doesn't matter what others think about the name we chose for our baby girl but it really got me doubting myself and now I'm sat here worrying whether we picked the right name. AIBU?

I'm now wondering if we know each other and my partner and I are the horrible couple you are talking about! Lol

My elderly mother tells a story about her long long deceased grandmother (not the UK) being told a cousin was calling their daughter Heather. Grandmother replied 'Why would you call a child Heather, cows pee on Heather'

I think Heather is a lovely name and so is the name you have chosen.

It's not a modern name! It's an old, traditional name in no way 'weird.' I very much doubt that your Nan has never heard of the name before.
Maybe she just doesn't like it? She's allowed her opinion, but ultimately it's your child and your decision.

Esme is lovely and not at all weird.

I agree with everyone who said not to say names in advance - some people assume it means their opinion is being sought.

I am using the keeping schtum approach as I have a lot of people - DH's family, some friends and colleagues - telling me I absolutely mustn't use a Welsh name (I am Welsh). On the other hand I have my family, some friends and colleagues telling me I absolutely mustn't use a non-Welsh name.

Unfortunately some people think it's their business what someone else names their child. The only people whose opinions matter are the child's parents.

She's entitled to her opinion. I wouldn't mind my nan being blunt with me. However ultimately it's your choice.

Take no notice. I have a name that is quite popular these days but when I was born it was very unusual. My grandma never his that she thought it was weird and still tells me I have a strange name today 😆 she loves me as much as all her grandchildren with 'ordinary' names though...

@Thewinterofdiscontent

I’m not a fan because it was a dated name when I was younger - a bit dated like Shirley or Heather. I’m sure it’s due a revival so perfectly acceptable now.
How is Heather dated exactly. ?

My first born is Heather. It's a lovely name

Shirley,Susan,Pamela, Alison , Stacey and such like are all dated imo

I agree, Heather was my choice.

What a silly thing to say. Cows pee on grass in fields, not heather anyway

Aww, grans tend to have no filter and no edit feature! lol. Just say, "Thanks Gran, we love it!" She'll come around as soon as she's holding beautiful Esme in her arms. Don't lose a moment of sleep over it, you're going to need all of it soon! Congrats!
