Your baby's name is 'so weird' ...?

Due with our baby girl in just a few weeks. It took us a long time to pick a name that will flow nicely with the middle name as well as the surname and a name we both love equally. My nan texted me this morning and ask if we've picked a name yet so I told her that we have and told her the name we chose is Esmé. Her response was simply 'such a weird name'. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm gobsmacked and don't know what to say back. I know it doesn't matter what others think about the name we chose for our baby girl but it really got me doubting myself and now I'm sat here worrying whether we picked the right name. AIBU?

It’s a lovely name. Just remember in future, NEVER EVER EVER tell anyone your chosen name before the baby is born. Announce their name when you announce the birth and all you’ll get is congratulations and ‘beautiful name’ no one would dare profess an opinion at that point! For some unknown reason EVERYONE has an opinion if you tell the name before the birth.

Hayder · 04/05/2021 18:06

It’s such a pretty name. Not weird at all.

LadyofMisrule · 04/05/2021 18:06

I've got a name with added punctuation. It's a pain in the arse, so these days I only use it for special occasions.

Favela · 04/05/2021 18:09

Gorgeous gorgeous name. My mother cried when she heard what we called our eldest, and said she had a grandson with a ludicrous name!! Henry Prosper. They become their names, and you won’t be able to keep the family away from lovely Esmé! Smile sweetly.

Niccibingo · 04/05/2021 18:10

Beautiful name

purplebunny2012 · 04/05/2021 18:10

@Bitofanexpert

Really nice name. If you are in England I would think about the accent on the ‘e’ though- I can see that practically being a pain throughout life even though it does look nice. If I’m being kind- are you sure she wasn’t referring to that?
I agree with this, if you're in Britain the accent isn't needed so it's a bit weird
BlowMeDownWithAFeather · 04/05/2021 18:14

It is a beautiful classy name. Is your Nan really my mother in law reincarnated?!

AnOnly · 04/05/2021 18:19

Beautiful name, I don't know anyone with an Esme so not over popular by any means down this neck of the woods. Great choice :)

ToniHargis · 04/05/2021 18:24

What a lovely name!
If it's any consolation, when I told my mother my idea for my 1st, she said "Well, I suppose I'll get used to it".

Kokosrieksts · 04/05/2021 18:27

My nan’s reaction after I told her my babies name was “yes, but what is her real name?” 😂
Nothing wrong with your chosen name.

mylifestory · 04/05/2021 18:28

You should question what she says from now on and think about what she has said to u in the past. U may interpret it differently looking back at it now. There are quite a few Esmes about!

CatherinaJTV · 04/05/2021 18:29

not bad at all - people are rude!

knockles · 04/05/2021 18:29

I was expecting you to say a quite out there name, but esme is beautiful and not in the least bit strange. Strange comment from your Nan.Don't let it affect your confidence in your choice. It's a very pretty name.x

MrsBa · 04/05/2021 18:30

Does she know how it's pronounced? It's a lovely name

Shirls22 · 04/05/2021 18:31

It’s a gorgeous name, don’t worry, just love it and her xx

Teachertired92 · 04/05/2021 18:32

Omg I’m due in September and Esmé is my name of choice! I had a similar reaction from my grandma and my parents. It is growing on them though!!! It’s a beautiful name and I’m sure everyone will love it as much as you do and your beautiful baby girl!

user1485851222 · 04/05/2021 18:32

Beautiful name , don't change it, or you will regret it.... congratulations BTW....

Thewinterofdiscontent · 04/05/2021 18:34

I’m not a fan because it was a dated name when I was younger - a bit dated like Shirley or Heather.
I’m sure it’s due a revival so perfectly acceptable now.

lovelsa · 04/05/2021 18:35

Super cute name!

My great-grandma straight up told my parents she hated my name (Elsa) but they named me it regardless. At first she called me by my middle name instead, but eventually she called me Elsa and that was that.

If you love the name use it. Once she meets little Esmé she will love the name because she loves your daughter.

murakamilove · 04/05/2021 18:36

Esme is a beautiful name, my Mum always told me to never tell a name before baby born - it’s a concept until baby here - no one would dream of commenting on the real thing!
Enjoy your baby girl x

Anneeone · 04/05/2021 18:37

Beautiful name

Muchasgracias · 04/05/2021 18:38

YABU to doubt yourself. It’s a lovely name but no matter what anyone else thinks, you picked it so it’s right for your daughter.

mumda · 04/05/2021 18:39

Do you read Pratchett's books?

Notreallyhappy · 04/05/2021 18:40

Rude!!!

Stick to your guns..and nan can bugger off

Made the mistake of not calling my son what I wanted forever ago.

failingmother · 04/05/2021 18:42

I would respond with…it’s a good job you are my grandma and I love you. If I didn’t I would let you know how hurt I am by your comment. I know you wouldn’t be trying to upset me at this important time in my life when I need the support of family yhat love me 😊
