Your baby's name is 'so weird' ...?

Due with our baby girl in just a few weeks. It took us a long time to pick a name that will flow nicely with the middle name as well as the surname and a name we both love equally. My nan texted me this morning and ask if we've picked a name yet so I told her that we have and told her the name we chose is Esmé. Her response was simply 'such a weird name'. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm gobsmacked and don't know what to say back. I know it doesn't matter what others think about the name we chose for our baby girl but it really got me doubting myself and now I'm sat here worrying whether we picked the right name. AIBU?

@KurtWilde

It's a lovely name OP! How rude of your nan. When I told my nan what DD1 was called she said oh that's a new fangled name. Err no, it's actually biblical!!
This made me smile. It reminded me of the time one older lady was telling her friend about her latest grandson. She said: “they’ve given him one of those newfangled names - Adam!”

‘texting back something like that to a pregnant mother... WEIRD!’

Tomasinabombadil · 04/05/2021 21:11

That’s a lovely name🥰
If I had a girl I would haven chosen either Esmé or Elspeth.💐

Greenshed · 04/05/2021 21:14

It's a lovely name, and of course what you and your partner choose is what counts - if you both love it, it's irrelevant what anyone else thinks.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 04/05/2021 21:15

Best hairdresser I ever had was an Esme - it’s not weird. I’d ignore it, I’m sure she didn’t mean anything nasty.

Bettyboodoingthedo · 04/05/2021 21:17

My 2nd child has a more unusual name and I was so upset by a couple of people’s thoughtless comments in the early baby days that I begged my husband to agree to changing it! Crazy really as we loved it then and love it now but couldn’t get past people’s opinions.
It was an odd response but surely no harm was meant so try to move past it.

MrsLighthouse · 04/05/2021 21:27

I love the name Esmé. It’s classically beautiful . Why not have a laugh and ask what name suggestions she has ...then reply “yuck” or “that’s horrible” to her suggestions .....see how she likes it 😆

Gottalaff · 04/05/2021 21:47

It's a really lovely name. Even if it wasn't, it's extremely rude to opine on this subject. People show their true colours.

thegreylady · 04/05/2021 21:52

Beautiful name. I love it (I am 77).

ConfusedCarrie · 04/05/2021 21:54

I love the name Esme x

Miisty · 04/05/2021 22:02

Lovely name keep it

Lickedmylollyandneversaidsorry · 04/05/2021 22:05

Unfortunately there is always someone who won't like it in the family. I chose to name my daughter Lyra and my partners mum made no attempt to hide how much she disliked it! Even 6 yrs on she still gets the odd dig in but I honestly don't care anymore. Early on it used to upset me but it goes over my head now. Emse is a lovely name you have chosen and don't let anyone make you doubt your choice! Good luck with the birth xxxx

Growltiger22 · 04/05/2021 22:30

Esmé is a beautiful name. Enjoy your new baby and don’t listen to anyone’s negative nonsense.

FlibbertyGiblets · 04/05/2021 22:58

How do you prn? Ez-may, Ez-mee, Essss-may/mee?

ChubbyMoomin · 04/05/2021 23:13

No it’s a beautiful classy name, nothing weird about it at all!

Ljcoolgran · 04/05/2021 23:32

It’s a beautiful name!

EinAugenblickBitte · 04/05/2021 23:36

It is not weird at all it's a lovely name. I told people my choice of name with my first pregnancy and it was a mistake as everyone had an opinion. The next pregnancy I didn't tell anyone our planned name and just told them DD was called when she arrived. No one can say anything then

I'm not fussed on Lyra but that is mainly because I know a couple with a little girl called Lyra and they are both absolutely horrible people. Illogical of me isn't it? Every time I hear it I think of that pair of smarmy nasty individuals. I hope young Lyra doesn't grow up like them.

I am sure if it wasn't for them I would love the name as it is unusual and different enough without being weird. And I am sure your little one is cute!

CervixHaver · 04/05/2021 23:41

Really pretty name! 🌸🧚‍♀️

Congratulations!

bitteroulbag · 05/05/2021 00:05

Not quite RTWT but is anyone else picturing OP’s Nan like Catherine Tate’s? Grin
Esmé is a gorgeous name btw

Pawprints2017 · 05/05/2021 00:07

This is the name we would have used if our lb was a girl. My husband told my mum and she said, "aww no, I don't like that." If we are ever lucky enough to be blessed with a little girl I'm still going to use it. I think it's beautiful as does my husband and that is all that matters!

numberoneson · 05/05/2021 00:37

I love the name Esme. I was interested enough because of your Gran's rude comment to google its meaaning, and that's rather lovely too.

The name Esme is a girl's name of French, Persian origin meaning "esteemed, beloved; emerald".

Wishing you as quick and easy a birth as mine was! Flowers

MrsMop1964 · 05/05/2021 00:45

A baby in our ward was called NEON !
NEON!?
Were the parents Greek by any chance? (or Classics scholars?) There are figures from classical antiquity called Neon.

Leontine · 05/05/2021 02:21

Esme is a really common name these days. Hmm I remember something similar happening in my family a few years ago when someone decided to call their baby Freya. The grandparents thought it was really weird, despite it being a common name by then.

emmiep · 05/05/2021 02:24

Everyone’s always got their thoughts on names. Most people have the good grace not to share them if they don’t like the name!
Some people are very traditional and if it’s not Olivia or Thomas, it’s deemed odd!
Personally, I love Esme. It’s a beautiful name that will suit a child as they age. Go for it.
