Your baby's name is 'so weird' ...?

Due with our baby girl in just a few weeks. It took us a long time to pick a name that will flow nicely with the middle name as well as the surname and a name we both love equally. My nan texted me this morning and ask if we've picked a name yet so I told her that we have and told her the name we chose is Esmé. Her response was simply 'such a weird name'. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm gobsmacked and don't know what to say back. I know it doesn't matter what others think about the name we chose for our baby girl but it really got me doubting myself and now I'm sat here worrying whether we picked the right name. AIBU?

Has Grannie has an Autocorrect Fail? I'm pretty sure I got caught out with Weird once, but I can't remember what I was trying to say. Bit it certainly wasn't wierd.

Scrfgkesjwjrf · 04/05/2021 17:40

I think she means she doesn’t like it, but doesn’t want to be so direct.

BungleandGeorge · 04/05/2021 17:41

Very normal and pretty name. Not sure about the accent though, wouldn’t it need an extra e on the end as well if you want it spelt as a French female name?

thenovice · 04/05/2021 17:42

It's a LOVELY name.
Your nan expressing her opinion like that is UGLY.

Mistressinthetulips · 04/05/2021 17:42

The name has been around for a couple of hundred years so hardly too new for the gm to have heard!

Scrfgkesjwjrf · 04/05/2021 17:43

Granted, it is now a common name but I think it you go outside the traditional list of names you can always expect older relatives to complain about it. They have no concept of the trendy naming of recent years and the wave of 20s/30s revival that brought names like Esme back into fashion

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 04/05/2021 17:44

I love that name. I know how to pronounce it because I have a friend called it.

However, maybe your man is reading/pronouncing it wrong?

I can’t see how she sees it as a weird name.

Confrontayshunme · 04/05/2021 17:45

My husband proudly told his granny we had named our first DD (the first greatgrandchild) after her. Her response: "I always hated my middle name." She didn't hate the baby though and clearly was just having a moment.

SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 04/05/2021 17:45

Nothing useful to add but I really love that name. I don't what isit about baby names that makes people feel entitled to act like twats.

alwaysanauntie · 04/05/2021 17:45

OP, when I told my brother we were going to call our daughter Cora I got back "what, like an apple cora"... pissed me off massively at the time (not to mention 'D'BIL calls her Cora the explorer), but had faded into distant memory until just now 😁

Michellelovesizzy · 04/05/2021 17:47

Love that name op

GemmaC1990 · 04/05/2021 17:47

Not weird. Lovely name. I told a colleague at work I was going to call my daughter Sienna and the response I got was “never heard of it”. I just laughed it off and our beautiful Sienna-Rose is now 3 months. I loved the name Esme as an option for our daughter but my friends daughter is called Esme so we decided against it. You can’t please everyone!

bellocchild · 04/05/2021 17:48

Like the name Esmé very much and it's traditional. You might like to know the ASCII code for é on a standard computer keyboard is alt+130. :-)

shipsngiggles · 04/05/2021 17:50

It’s a perfectly normal name!

Helpneededbyanoutsider · 04/05/2021 17:51

I’ve worked with plenty of Esme’s when I was working at a nursery. It’s lovely and honestly more common then weird...maybe she misread it/ pronounced it in her head. Eg.”eas-me”?

quizqueen · 04/05/2021 17:52

The name has certainly become more popular since Twilight but I do like it. You may decide your daughter doesn't look like an Esme when she's born or you may decide it fits her perfectly. Your choice, whatever.

Jane1727 · 04/05/2021 17:53

A beautiful name!

Frazzledstar1 · 04/05/2021 17:53

It’s really not a weird name!

My nephew has a weird name and I’m really not keen but I’d say it to the parents, it’s just rude.

Lucyk1 · 04/05/2021 17:54

Common name... Made famous by the Twilight films. Your nan probably hasn't seen the films, and hasnt a clue about modern names.

Frazzledstar1 · 04/05/2021 17:54

Sorry that’s meant to say *never say it

ouchyouchyow · 04/05/2021 18:00

She's from a diff generation and so is the name Esme. So it has different connotations for her

Don't dwell on it

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 04/05/2021 18:00

My MIL said after the birth “oh I didn’t expect you to choose such a weird name”. Made me like it more 😂

190190tnt · 04/05/2021 18:01

Personally love that name and was considering it for our child if he had been a girl. Your Nan thinks it's weird because it probably wasn't around when she had kids. Ignore it, she'll love the baby whatever name you call her and will soon get used it it!

MRSsqueak · 04/05/2021 18:05

its a lovely name OP

Gwenhwyfar · 04/05/2021 18:05

@HappyGoPlucky

Esme is a lovely name! Grandmas sometimes reserve the right to be really rude - she'll get worse as she gets older, I promise. Just text back - Cheers, Nan! - and forget about it. It's not her decision. What would she choose anyway? Probably something you'd think was weird. There's nothing weird about Esme - it's a beautiful name.
Oh yeah. Nobody can answer back to a 90+ person! I would like more honesty in the world though. She's entitled to her opinion.
