Would you judge someone for rehoming a puppy ?

Someone I know got a puppy a few months ago and finds it too much hard work, so looking to we-home puppy.

Thoughts?

I might judge them if they made the same mistake twice, for instance if they rehomed the puppy as they didn't have time for it.. and then without making any lifestyle changes, got another puppy they would also NOT have time for...

But rehoming is for the dog, an opportunity to upgrade to owners who have the time/patience/experience/money/suitable housing - I would NEVER judge someone for admitting they can't cope and finding an animal a more suitable home.

It’s better than not being able to meet the puppy’s needs but a shame they didn’t properly consider the hard work of having a puppy before getting one.

No. I'd much rather someone rehomed a puppy they couldnt cope with to a home that wants them. If they repeated then I'd judge

Why does it matter if they are judged? It's better to be judged than to have a dog they can't handle. If they can't cope with it then it needs rehoming while as young as possible.

No, I wouldn't judge them - unless it was really obvious in advance that they wouldn't be able to cope and they went ahead anyway. Anyone can make a mistake.

I’d think they were an arse for not really looking into how much work a dog would be.
I’d think much worse if someone who had a badly trained, mildly neglected dog though.

But it’s better for the dog to be rehired sooner rather than later.

@FizzyApricot I ask because a while ago there was such a nasty thread on here where someone had given up a puppy and the poster was a friend of this person and no longer wanted to be their friend because they gave the puppy up. I wanted to understand if that's how people feel about giving up puppies or if that was a bit extreme.

But significantly less than someone who keeps a puppy when they aren’t capable of fully and properly caring for it.

It depends on the circumstances. I would if it was pretty obvious they wouldn't be able to manage and it was a covid purchase as they had time on their hands and then suddenly they had to go back to work full time with a long commute with no one home for the puppy or couldn't afford the cost. But if they had done their research and were finding it tougher than they thought, then no.

Depends on the reason. If it's something like the puppy poses a danger in anyway, no I wouldn't judge. But people don't put enough work into researching what life with a puppy is actually like so yes I do judge them for being starry eyed over the cute little pup but not actually bothering their arse to find out how to take care of it

I don’t judge people for rehoming when they can’t cope for whatever reason, I judge if they got the puppy when they clearly wouldn’t be able to look after it.
My dog was six months old when I got him, the original owners had a baby, a toddler and both worked full time, they warned me he was really destructive (because he was bored, ignored and not exercised enough) he never chewed a thing in my home between the day he arrived and the day he passed away.....apart from a joint of beef one new year, that he chewed

But if someone can't look after a dog it is best to rehome it and live with feeling like people are judging you.

It depends on how much the decision was thought through. I really try to not judge anyone but once knew someone who took on 2 dogs while she was struggling with a challenging baby and she also did it knowing that they'd likely be relocating and living in a small flat in the near future. Sure enough they ended up in the flat and the dogs went. These were also dogs who had already been given up by someone else so the fact they had to go through the change and upheaval twice seemed particularly unfair. The poor dogs.

I saw getting a dog the same way I saw having a child. I wouldn't put my kids up for adoption so I wasn't going to get a puppy unless I felt the same way.
I wouldn't judge someone for it. I guess it depends why they did it. But people do need to put more thought into it then they do.
Pounds are heaving and it's only going to get worse over the summer.

Depends if ‘rehome’ means selling the poor thing on Gumtree / pets4homes

I might think they were a bit foolish and selfish in the first place, so I guess judging, but would appreciate them doing the right thing sooner rather than later. The rescue organizations are starting to be over run with these poor pups.

Yeah, I'd judge. Unless for some reason it had major behavioural issues. My dog is thick as mince, bless him, and the toilet training nearly broke me. It took him forever to get it. I didn't just give up on him though! Puppyhood is bloody hard but you've just got to get through it.

Far better to rehome it than keep it in an unsuitable home.

I wouldn’t judge them if it was just once but people who do it time and time again really annoy me
