to get fed up with receiving more than the average amount of abuse on the road just because I drive a range rover?

I get the whole environment thing psses some people off but this seems out of proportion with the abuse. I am a considerate driver and really object to the abuse especially when my DC's are in the car and people are swearing. Recently parked car in a supermarket carpark to have someone who lived in a nearby flat on one of the higher floor start shouting that i should get back in my RR and pss off.

yes excellent line of argument there - really like it. To run over anyone who objects to your car. Nice one!

OrmIrian · 14/11/2007 13:54

No excuse for bad manners > And I really can't say that any 4x4 makes me that mad...although I don't live in a city.

However I think there is something about such fortress-type vehicles that can prompt unpleasantly aggressive driving. If you feel invulnerable on the road, it is easier to feel less concerned about hitting other vehicles/pedestrians. Maybe that's what people are reacting to???? Grasping at straws.....no, don't really see it. Would never personally direct abuse at you mrs4x4 although I don't think your choice vehicle is totally appropriate in a town

hifi · 14/11/2007 13:54

pmsl, i would love to squash a micra.

pud1 · 14/11/2007 13:57

cant wait for all this abuse to start. think i am going to have fun running over roy cropper tree huggin types

hifi · 14/11/2007 13:57

agree ormirian, unfortunately its dhd so have no choice, travelled 60 miles in 3 days around town, £70, very uneconomical.

thinking about it, I live in London and can honestly say a 4x4 has never pissed me off enough to abuse them? Bikes piss me off way more.............

mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/11/2007 13:59

I live in a City Centre and see many pointlessly large cars and 4x4 vehicles on a daily basis.(some are large but still you can't go off road in them) Would not hurl abuse at anyone for the car they drive, just how they drive it.

I used to drive a Nissan 200sx s13 which really was a pointless over the top sporty car which cost so much to run that I have sadly had to part with it.
I now own a very tiny 999cc Hyundai atoz. I can't seem to get used to being so 'small' when driving. I was cut up the other day on a roundabout by someone changing lane who was driving a Range Rover. I hooted my pathetic little horn but don't think they were too bothered, I had to swerve to avoid the kerb.
I can't see the attraction with driving something so large in a City, would much rather be driving my little Nissan, that way I can over take them!

hifi · 14/11/2007 14:00

i am overly cautious when driving my gas guzzler, they look intimidating and a friend pointed out people move out of you way in a bigger car, not the intention. i find i get less abuse in 4x4 than when driving a shitty astra, comments on driving etc.

southutsire · 14/11/2007 14:06

[whispers] Er, I have a completely non-controversial question that I would like to slip in here as it's too trivial to start a thread. Here goes: is an MPV the same as a people carrier?

[I drive a Ford Mondeo for the record )

donnie · 14/11/2007 14:07

no hifi - you get loads more abuse but you just can't hear it.

And to think there are those who deliberately cut up drivers of vehicles such as yours as a matter of routine- or indeed make a point of scraping their keys along the side of the beast when it is parked next to them. Shocking.

sagitta · 14/11/2007 14:12

I wouldn't hurl abuse, (not loudly anyway) but I think you are being disingenuous about the safety of 4x4s. You are more likely to kill your child than you are to kill mine.
In America, approximately one parent a week backs over and kills one of their own children in their 4x4.

hifi · 14/11/2007 14:13

donnie you are seriously bitter, i have never been on the recieving end of such behaviour, its not normal.

sagitta · 14/11/2007 14:15

And it's all very well being overly cautious, but your blind spot extends for 15 foot behind you. Being cautious can't help you see your child running over to you...

kerala · 14/11/2007 14:18

bifi thank god!
was thinking you were jeremy clarkson and was surprised he was a mnetter

Lilymaid · 14/11/2007 14:21

In our semi-rural area the latest fashion is for pickups - even longer than the normal 4x4 and just as ugly and aggressive looking. Try getting out of a supermarket car park in your super mini when one of these (complete with tow bar and double cab) are next to you.

hifi · 14/11/2007 14:21

i do admire jeremy for his none pc ness though.

hifi · 14/11/2007 14:27

Especially in a Waitrose car park in a famous university town!

marge2 · 14/11/2007 14:38

I had a big horsebox towing 4x4 before I had the kids - needed it to pull the horse.. Never had any probs parking it - even in local market towns. People need to learn to drive the things properly. Got rid as soon as kids came along cos it was so damned expensive to run and could't afford horse any more anyway working only part time.

Loved it to drive around the country in - seriosly don't understand why anyone would want one who lives and drives in towns all the time though.

YANBU. How dare person abuse you - how do they know what you may or not need it for.

NoNameToday · 14/11/2007 16:04

pud1, enjoy your X-trail, safe in the knowledge that it is classed as a 'pretend' 4X4 by those who drive 'proper' 4X4s.

Consequently you may only receive pretend abuse
