AIBU to have hairy legs this summer?

Franklyfrost · 27/04/2021 14:37

I’m busy and don’t want to shave or wax my legs this summer but I do want to wear floaty dresses, short shorts and sparkly sandals.

My legs aren’t very hairy, just long thin patchy mangey hair from below knee an ankle. It would look better if I had a luscious thick black pelt.

Should I sod it and keep the hair or would it turn your stomach? I don’t want to scare small children or have people think I’m unkempt or dirty. But also I don’t want to act as if I’m ashamed of my leg hair (even if I am).

@HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst

It is absolutely your choice but I cannot imagine not shaving my legs. But then, I also cannot imagine going out not dressed properly eg in pjs or dressing gown, which apparently some people do. I don't recoile in horror but I would silently judge.
What? How are unshaven legs on a par to not being getting dressed to go outdoors? This is nonsense.

It's a social norm. It's not dirty or slovenly.

I say this as someone comfortable with my own hairy-legged state when wandering around at a weekend, going for brunch or whatever.

While at the same time, if I ever work in an office again where a certain type of clothes and grooming is the expected norm, I'd hesitate to not shave.

I doubt I'd have the confidence to go to events in my field with unshaven legs and I annoy myself. It's so fucking ingrained.

But no, hairy legs are not a sign of poor hygiene Hmm

Tal45 · 27/04/2021 15:35

I don't shave all winter but I don't have the confidence to go swimming/out bare legged without shaving. I wish it was socially acceptable. The worst thing is I'm just as bad, I remember seeing a woman at the pool in swimming costume who hadn't shaved her bikini line at all and I was totally grossed out :-(

HarebrightCedarmoon · 27/04/2021 15:35

Don't shave your legs if you don't want to.

Do shave your legs if you want to.

Personally I go over my legs a couple of times a week in the shower, but some people get a rash and it's painful, so I can understand them not wanting to bother.

Livpool · 27/04/2021 15:35

I shave every day but couldn't care less what someone else does

TheGoogleMum · 27/04/2021 15:39

I'm not brave enough but voted yanbu because I wish I was! If more other women do this maybe I will too :p

booksandnooks · 27/04/2021 15:41

I was bullied by age 7 or 8 for having hairy legs so no wonder the OP is worried about people making comments.
I hardly ever shave my legs but I wear trousers all the time. I'm 25, not old or anything but i bleed and get a terrible rash. I shaved 2 days in a row a few years ago and bled for ages all over. My legs come up spotty and sore. It looks so much better with hair! And I don't chafe on my jeans when I have hairy legs. I wish I could be this perfect woman with beautiful hairless legs but I cant- and 2 minutes? who takes 2 minutes? It takes me easily a half hour. More.

NurseButtercup · 27/04/2021 15:41

Nobody cares.
Seriously nobody cares..
Whenever I see a woman with hairy legs, my only thought is "oh, she's got hairy legs". And that's it, I have no other thought, I don't judge it's not my business.

If you decide to stop shaving your legs and your armpits. Stop caring about what other people think. Do what makes you happy x

Beetlewing · 27/04/2021 15:42

I'll be shaving my legs because I like the feel of them smooth but I've stopped doing my armpits because that pointless exercise can fuck right off

booksandnooks · 27/04/2021 15:42

I don't know why men are obsessed with women having hairless bodies. It makes me sick that they will reject or make fun of a woman because she doesn't look like a prepubepentescent girl Confused barf

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/04/2021 15:45

I agree with many.

Your choice. If you are comfortable with it, go for it. It's your legs and you can choose.

But I also agree that "I am too busy" is just very eye rolling excuse.

PollyDarton1 · 27/04/2021 15:46

I didn't shave armpits or legs the entirety of Oct-April.

Then I caved in on a summery day.

Personally I couldn't give a shit either way. You do you.

GoryGilmore · 27/04/2021 15:46

Out of interest, those who don’t remove their body hair - don’t you find it itchy? Anytime mine has grown longer it drives me insane. It’s not the regrowth stage that itches, it’s when it gets longer. Or am I just odd?

LindaEllen · 27/04/2021 15:47

Hair is natural. It's supposed to be there. You don't HAVE to shave. Never apologise for not following a trend. Only you can decide what you do with your body hair. Enjoy your summer :).

Kokosrieksts · 27/04/2021 15:47

I really don’t understand how shaving legs is difficult, it takes no longer than brushing your teeth.
I mean if you are fully happy about it go ahead and don’t think twice, but if you’re uncomfortable why not shave it?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/04/2021 15:48

Just want to add that people give much less fucks about randoms and how they look/dance than we all seem to think.

Jekere6 · 27/04/2021 15:49

I haven't shaved mine in years, doesn't itch me.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 27/04/2021 15:49

Can I just point out that I did not start this thread.
OP asked for opinions and I gave mine.

notacooldad · 27/04/2021 15:50

How busy can you really be to spend 2 minutes shaving? 🙄

Doesn't really matter does it? She can choose whether to shave her legs or not.
Of course op can choose to shave her legs or not but to say she's sooo busy that she can't find 90 seconds when she is already showering is ridiculous.

Kokosrieksts · 27/04/2021 15:51

@booksandnooks
^ and 2 minutes? who takes 2 minutes? It takes me easily a half hour. More. ^

It definitely takes me no more than 2 minutes. Put some shower gel on it while in the shower, go over with a razor, job done. No idea what you are doing there for 30 minutes, are you using tweezers. Grin

ShowOfHands · 27/04/2021 15:51

DD is 13 and doesn't shave her legs or armpits and gets stick for it. One girl asked her the other day if she ever hoped to have a boyfriend with "legs like that". DD pointed out that one, she's gay and two, she isn't attracted to small minded wazzocks.

So for all the "who cares" posters, of course people care and they make you feel bad for it. Usually the objection is that you're unclean or lazy or horror of horrors, not pleasing men.

My DH's gel foam thing is great for speeding it up🙈 He did mention it's running out quickly and Gillette is probably making packaging smaller or smth🙈 I just nodded with a serious "they are all at it"

Oddly enough, some people aren't the same as you. Some people have very sensitive skin or mobility issues or balance issues or sight issues. It takes you 2 minutes. Not everybody is you.

Rubbish.

Shaven or not, an adult woman does not look like a child.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 27/04/2021 15:59

And it does bother me that women spend so much time, money and effort to do something that they feel pressured to do.

If it's your choice to shave then that's great, but as I see from conversations like this one, lots of women would rather not but feel they have to.
