To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

Your mistake is restricting yourself to “boys” clothes. There’s no such thing. Children can wear any clothes that aren’t operated by their genitals (that’s all clothes BTW) so you didn’t “have” to get one covered in sharks.

I think you missed the point of the thread, Uhtred. The point is that there's a short of neutral clothes that aren't covered in sharks, unicorns or other heavily gendered stuff, and when there is, it's often a lot more expensive.
ElaborateSalad · 26/04/2021 11:03

I LOVE boys' clothes!

KFleming · 26/04/2021 11:04

At least you get a choice of dinosaurs or sharks
unicorns or more bloody unicorns for girls

You can dress your daughter in the “boys” clothes. My DD wears a mix of whatever from the supermarket. Some flowery stuff, but she has equal amounts of lions and dinosaurs etc.

CrushedVelvet · 26/04/2021 11:05

Try vertbaudet.co.uk
Often have multipacks on sale

Noodella18 · 26/04/2021 11:06

Take a look at Lindex, lots of gender neutral stuff. Also scandi brands such as Duns, Maxomorra etc (they are quite pricey, but often stuff in the sale, and the scandi-scandiesque selling groups on FB are good too).

My girl often gets confused for a boy and I don't give a single solitary shit. She wears everything, blue, pink and every colour in between. But I do get frustrated when I can't find a single thing in Tesco which isn't pink for girls or covered in cars for boys.

Greenmarmalade · 26/04/2021 11:07

M&S and Next have some nice clothes for babies.

I get hand-me-downs and supermarket clothing, so it’s always dinosaurs or vehicles. You can mix it up by looking in the girls section. My boy has some lovely teal and orange clothes, with animals and flowers, from his sister.

But I agree... the gender stereotyping crap with clothing is bonkers and probably damaging.

Noodella18 · 26/04/2021 11:08

@aliasgrape, I often find there's Picalilly stuff in TK Maxx.

CaptainSpirit · 26/04/2021 11:10

Sounds annoying OP, I don't like dinosaurs! Grin

I have two little girls, one is a preschooler and one is still a baby/toddler, so still very much in babyish-looking clothes. I'm also pregnant with my third girl now as well.
I will admit I love the pinks and tradition 'girly' colours, but I get a pang of frustration shopping for my first born as she absolutely loves dogs, but they're not very common on girls clothing.
Ditto teddy bears for my current youngest - I can get no end of bloody bunnies and unicorns but my two like dogs and teddy bears best!

EmeraldShamrock · 26/04/2021 11:11

Why cant there be new born clothes that arent gendered.
This has been raised many times throughout the years, in all DC clothing and toys not only newborn clothing.
Then people are surprised we live in a gender less society today, with more pronouns and labels to avoid being classified as male or female.

If you prefer plain clothing buy it. Both of mine DD/DS wore sharks, it was their favourite beachwear.

Tiredmummy2014 · 26/04/2021 11:13

Try Primark, they had loads of brightly coloured clothes in the boys section x

SaucyHorse · 26/04/2021 11:14

Lindex baby clothes are my favourite for neutral stuff and more friendly animals. I can see Moomins, rabbits, fish, suns, toucans, hot air balloons, cats, koalas, pears, rainbows - all sweet and non-gendered stuff.
I think they are more expensive than supermarket stuff, but the fabric is lovely and stretchy and holds its shape and softness. They are always good to be passed on to another baby once they are grown out of.

breedershock · 26/04/2021 11:15

I like lots of the jungle animal and farm animal stuff - had good stuff from H&M, next and also morrisons. Also these places seem to have happier, friendly looking dinosaurs too!

Mummysgonetobed · 26/04/2021 11:17

I have 3 boys OP so I feel your pain, especially now my middle one will only wear dinosaurs.

I like Zara and H&M and I got a few lovely bright T-shirt’s from primark yesterday. They probably won’t last long but they’re cute.

dotdashdashdash · 26/04/2021 11:17

@JeanClaudeVanDammit

I’ll swap you sharks for f*ing unicorns! I love the bright colours and different prints on clothes from e.g. Frugi but they are so much more expensive unless you can get a good second hand bundle.
Definitely!
Icantrememebrtheartist · 26/04/2021 11:20

I had horrendous PND after my son was born and I found shopping for baby boys clothes so depressing. He was a winter baby two years ago and everything seemed to be navy blue, black or grey. I remember looking at all the bright coloured girls clothes and bursting in to tears in Next.

Have a look in Tesco they have some lovely colourful wildlife themed clothes for babies at the mo.

tuttifuckinfruity · 26/04/2021 11:21

I've never had a problem finding all kinds of bright, colourful and interesting prints for both boys and girls.

I never really understand these threads. There's a massive range of clothes out there.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 11:24

It’s just personal taste I think tutti

YANBU. Although personally I like stuff like that, my DD likes dinosaurs. She currently has a dinosaur coat and three pairs of dinosaur shoes, hah. I agree that I prefer dinosaurs to unicorns personally.

10YellowTulips · 26/04/2021 11:31

Check out Lindex

I just bought my friend's baby some gorgeous stuff yesterday - Walruses, Koalas and Leopards. They have loads of different animal prints in bright unisex colours

swimlittlefishy · 26/04/2021 11:35

They're not miserable. Just buy bright colours, its not hard.

Hollyhead · 26/04/2021 11:39

YABU - M&S have a significant range
of non shark/dino hats

As do loads of shops. I think you just want to appear 'on trend' with not wanting gendered items.

LokiDoki75 · 26/04/2021 11:39

I’m having a similar problem but with a different age range and SEN. Trying to shop for my DS (11) is a nightmare because it’s nearly all dark colours, football and gaming, three things he couldn’t be less interested in if he tried! I’ve ended up taking up sewing because the trouble it was causing was driving me crackers. At the moment my plan is apparently to be so bad at it he’ll willingly wear anything else, but I’ll get there 😁

Welshwabbit · 26/04/2021 11:42

I have no issue with sharks or dinosaurs as long as they're nice and bright! I agree with others that H&M is a good place to get boys' clothes in different colours, and not too pricey. Sainsburys also. Boots used to have a nice range too but not sure if it's still going. If you like rainbow stuff OP and want to treat yourself (because it is pretty expensive) Jools Oliver's Little Bird range has now been taken up by Next: www2.next.co.uk/shop/brand-littlebirdbyjoolsoliver-0#1_2040

AlohaMolly · 26/04/2021 11:44

DS is 5 soon, but I remember the problem! I just used to like plain stuff in nice colours for him and I really didn’t like cutesy Peter rabbit/character stuff or things with obvious designs on like cars or whatever, mostly because he was a baby and didn’t have a preference. Now he’s older and massively into dinosaurs and because it’s a genuine like, I’m happy to indulge it! H&M all the way Grin

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 11:45

Actually hollyhead I’m quite happy to buy gendered items hence buying a blue hat. I just don’t want everything covered in prints. Plain is good, sometimes. Whether that’s blue or pink, white or grey.
