To worry about airplane noise in Fulham?

Paribus · 24/04/2021 20:25

I know Fulham is a great area but could someone who live there come and talk to me about airplane noise please?? I spoke to a few friends and their views range from “barely/not noticeable” to “unbearable, had to move because of that”. Visit to the area did not help either as there are no planes at the moment! I am particularly interested in Fulham Broadway area, so basically a few streets between Kings and and Fulham rd. Please help!!

Exactly my old area! I used to be woken by Concorde every morning, but that's no longer an issue... yes you hear it, but it isn't all night and you do get used to it. With all the other noises of central London I wouldn't discount Fulham because of it.

CoraPirbright · 24/04/2021 20:30

Can’t help with Fulham exactly but live in Chiswick so on the direct flight path and arguably worse than Fulham as the planes are dropping in height en route to Heathrow. Never noticed the plane noise at all! In fact, the only thing I ever noticed was the lack of planes when that Icelandic volcano grounded all flights a few years ago. So I noticed their absence iyswim rather than the noise.

JeanneDoe · 24/04/2021 20:31

It’s not great generally in SW London as you’re right under the LHR flight path. And currently it’s not bad given the reduced flights over London. But come the summer in normal circumstances and they’re every 3 minutes, it’s annoying. But you get used to it. Well I have.

Would you not just spend an afternoon/evening in Parsons Green and see how you feel? It might annoy you, it might not.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/04/2021 20:33

Concorde was lunchtime when I lived on the flight path.

I lived for a year in Heston in the 1980s. Had to pause phone calls whilst planes went over.

CoconutChair · 24/04/2021 20:39

I was surprised when we moved to Surrey and at night and very early morning it sounded like a plane was about to drop into our bedroom. We weren’t even that close to Heathrow! It was only at certain times and days, so presumably the landing fight path changed on a rota. Thankfully that house was rented, so just an issue for a year!

There’s a website you can look at to track flight paths. When we bought our current house (10 mins drive from rented house) I made sure it wasn’t under a flight path. No plane sounds at all.

We’d lived in central London for many years beforehand, but I didn’t want that level of noise pollution when we’d moved “to the country”.

Thank you ladies for the quick responses 🌺🌺. We are in SW London now (Chelsea) and no airplane noise at all- zero! So am very wary about the noise to be completely honest. Are there ANY areas in SW6 that suffer less? We were looking at the streets around Stamford bridge area/Kings rd and the few planes that we managed to see were realky far away?

Me too!

I've no idea what it's like these days, but as I love planes it wouldn't bother me. I'd find people on the street/cars more of a disruption.

How much do you aeroplanes OP?

DartmoorChef · 24/04/2021 20:46

You only live ONE mile away from Fulham now. It really won't be any different. Confused

Paribus · 24/04/2021 20:47

Not keen on the airplane noise but fine with airplanes per se Lynette ;)).

OP posts:
Paribus · 24/04/2021 20:49

2 miles ;)) but i see your point :)). Frustrating as there is no way to see if it is that big of an issue atm!

Wherearemymarbles · 24/04/2021 20:49

There is no real difference between chelsea and fulham in terms of noise. Depends which way the wind blows! Sometimes planes will be further south over battersea or north over hammersmith

Amanduh · 24/04/2021 20:53

If you live in Stamford Bridge you’ll just have a few hours of noise every weekend when the football is on anyway 😂

MumofPsuedoAdult · 24/04/2021 20:57

I lived there for years (in the Concorde days) and I can honestly say that even though I heard Concorde, it very quickly became white noise that you tuned out. There's no more Concorde so I'd say the benefits of the area (lovely!!) outweigh the noise.

DartmoorChef · 24/04/2021 20:57

But it won't be any more of an issue than it already is. I lived in New Malden and we heard plane noise but not to the extent it was a disruption to daily life .

Paribus · 24/04/2021 20:58

Oh dear ;)). That’s noise taken to a completely different level @Amanduh 😂

OP posts:
Paribus · 24/04/2021 21:02

@DartmoorChef, that's exactly what i am trying to figure out- is it really that disruptive? Like i said, some friends say it is not noticeable at all and some had to move out!

Cbd333 · 24/04/2021 21:03

I'm in Fulham, the planes fly from about 4/5am until 11pm. If you are very sensitive to noise I would think twice about moving there, I keep ear plugs next to the bed as I am a very light sleeper. But that said, you do get used to it pretty quickly and it's not like motorway loud, just a bit annoying first thing or if you're trying to concentrate on something and you've got all the doors open!

Paribus · 24/04/2021 21:08

@Cbd333, aha! Thanks for replying, are you also in the area close to Chelsea or towards the river? Seems that the areas near the river are worse affected or may be just a wishful thinking on my side??

VestaTilley · 24/04/2021 21:09

Aeroplane.

It’s bad sometimes in SE London so I don’t imagine it’ll be great in Fulham!

Kisskiss · 24/04/2021 21:14

I’m in fulham. When we bought , I was a teeny bit worried about the planes but luckily it isn’t loud enough to bother me.. you can just about hear them if you’re in the garden etc, but it’s not booming etc. Tbh I find matchdays way more annoying because of traffic/crowds

Paribus · 24/04/2021 21:17

@VestaTilley, airplane and aeroplane are both correct spellings :)). Thanks for reply anyway!

Cbd333 · 24/04/2021 21:18

@Paribus I've lived on Rosaline Road, Brookville Road and now near Munster Road so closer to Parsons Green than Fulham Broadway. When I look up here the planes seem to be directly overhead so you may actually be a little better there.

Paribus · 24/04/2021 21:19

@Kisskiss, thanks! Do you think some areas of Fulham are worse affected? Friends in Imperial Wharf say the noise is very disruptive!

Bluntness100 · 24/04/2021 21:22

I don’t know Fulham but live the same distance from Gatwick and planes can fly quite low as they are coming into land, they aren’t over the house, as they are not allowed, it’s off the flight path. They don’t take off in my direction,,just landing.

I genuinely don’t notice them, my husband notices them more, but for me it’s something I simply don’t notice.

Kisskiss · 24/04/2021 21:24

Are they in tall new builds? I’ve only lived in one place in fulham so can’t comment!
You should do a long pub lunch in The rose, or Aragon house or the white horse and see whether you notice any of the planes
