To worry about airplane noise in Fulham?

Paribus · 24/04/2021 20:25

I know Fulham is a great area but could someone who live there come and talk to me about airplane noise please?? I spoke to a few friends and their views range from “barely/not noticeable” to “unbearable, had to move because of that”. Visit to the area did not help either as there are no planes at the moment! I am particularly interested in Fulham Broadway area, so basically a few streets between Kings and and Fulham rd. Please help!!

I'm Maxwell Road, v near Stamford Bridge. I'd say if that's the area you're interested in think much mire about the football disruption than flight paths....

Cookerhood · 24/04/2021 21:43

Concord was 11am, I remember it well! I had a friend who lived very close to Heathrow & when our babies were tiny we used to have to stop talking until it had gone over. It was SO loud.

KatieB55 · 24/04/2021 21:49

By Fulham Palace, just off Fulham Palace Rd and planes are directly overhead. In normal times every 3-4 mins. We do find them noisy.

BlueAbacus · 24/04/2021 21:50

I’ve lived in Earls Court, Fulham, Hammersmith by the river and Chiswick: Hammersmith was the worst. Didn’t notice them much in any of the areas though, it became background city noise very quickly. I don’t think you’ll notice a huge difference Chelsea - Stamford Bridge

SaturdayRocks · 24/04/2021 22:00

I lived on Fulham Rd for a while and it was the noisiest place I’ve ever lived. This was in the days of Concord, so that didn’t help.

Planes would wake me up every morning - they took off literally every 30 seconds.

We also had ambulances tearing down Fulham Rd with their sirens blaring all hours of the day and night.

I think our places (above a shop) was very badly glazed / insulated.

We then moved to Whittingstall Rd, which is literally off Fulham Rd, and it’s only occurred to me now that I don’t have any memory of planes or noise there at all.

Thsnk you so much ladies, that’s really so very helpful ❤️. @sesquipedalia, that's close to the area we were thinking of- Meghan’s on Kings rd is a big pull 😂. Please do tell about your experience both airplane noise wise and football noise wise!!! Any drawbacks to the area??

@Kisskiss, yes, tall new builds! Re pub lunch- I know!! Would have done that pre- cv, but impossible to judge now as there are literally no planes 😔😔

Love Megan's! Hate football. Days matches are on are tricky. Access hard as roads are blocked and crowds busy. It does interrupt life. I'd definitely say before buying spend a few evenings around a match and see how you feel.

Paribus · 24/04/2021 22:50

No matches atm either 🙈🙈🙈! Megan’s amazing! Their coconut latte is pure bliss.

Coming back to airplane noise @sesquipedalia- do you hear it esp at night ;)?
@VestaTilley, airplane and aeroplane are both correct spellings :)). Thanks for reply anyway!
Nope, one is American English, one is British English, not both "correct spellings".

When I lived in Fulham the planes used to sound like they were on top of my flat. I lived in Parsons Green and was a heavy sleeper.

SaturdayRocks · 24/04/2021 23:00

Seriously?? Does it matter?

And surely both British English and American English are both correct.

Paribus · 24/04/2021 23:09

@SaturdayRocks exactly ;)). @1990s i know but they are both still correct ;)). Anyway, let’s not get distracted by subtle spelling nuances, shall we 😂😂?

Depends if you're British or American. Only brought it up because the OP did.....

To bring it back to the post, the planes are nosier in Fulham than Chelsea. You will notice them.

Paribus · 24/04/2021 23:58

@1990s, OP did not bring it up, it was a reply to another post, correcting OP’s spelling ;))). And OP is neither British nor American so surely is allowed to use both spellings 😂😂😂😂.

The things people fixate on. And then just have to have the last word over. Grin 😂

Anyway - Fulham Rd noisy. Other roads not necessarily so much. Double glazing matters. IME, anyway!

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/04/2021 00:30

I live under the flight path for Bristol Airport. Planes are at about 2000 feet when overhead according to flightradar24. I barely notice them unless I am in the garden and look up. I actually find helicopters more of a nuisance.

I grew up living half a mile from the runway at Filton in Bristol where Concorde was built. It and the Red Arrows were the only planes that caused the windows to rattle.

SneezyGonzalez · 25/04/2021 00:46

I’ve not lived there for years (since the Concorde days, we used to pause talking whenever it flew over 😆). Airplane noise was quite bad although we got used to it. I imagine the planes are far more frequent and earlier/later nowadays.

EuphieKat · 25/04/2021 01:20

I used to live in New Malden too, DartmoorChef, and Kingston Hill, and my brother lives in Roehampton, which is pretty good for place watching too! I used to love watching the planes stack up, especially Concorde.

cerealgamechanger · 25/04/2021 01:31

I don't think it's the planes you should be worrying about, the traffic in that area is horrendous (as it is anywhere in central London). I lived for many years in SW1 and when I moved out to a quieter area, I couldn't believe the difference

indiakulfi · 25/04/2021 01:41

We had Concorde go over at 11am and 2pm , you could set your watch by it 😁

Troublewaters2021 · 25/04/2021 03:16

I grew up on Fulham road and only moved away to different area of London 9 years ago and my parents are still there so we are their often.
Fulham road - that is the least of your worries, we heard ambulances and football more than I ever noticed the planes.

motherrunner · 25/04/2021 06:14

I don’t live under a flight path but I purposely select the airplane noise on my white noise app - I like the rumbling! I wouldn’t disregard an area due to a flight path, I’m sure you would become use to it.

tootiredx1000 · 25/04/2021 06:50

If you're two miles away why are you worried? Lived all round there and yes you can hear plane noise as I'm sure you can now but you get used to it. I found Fulham beach area sw10 worst in summer years ago. I live rurally now and haven't heard a plane in years...

namechange34 · 25/04/2021 07:59

When we lived in the area the planes used to wake us most mornings around 5am. Hard to organise backyard meet ups as couldn't know in advance which days the planes would be pretty much on top of us. Loved the area, hated the planes.
