Does the novelty of living in a nice house ever wear off?

Before I start, I promise this isn’t a stealth boast, and actually, to a lot of people, our house won’t even be that nice.

We moved 2 years ago to a decent sized house with a big garden in a ‘chocolate box’ rural village. I feel so lucky every day when I drive home to live where we do.

However, I was sitting in the garden just now with a glass of wine, looking at the pretty (field) views, it was so peaceful, silent apart from birdsong and I just felt this overwhelming sense of gratitude.

I get it every time I drive into the drive and after 2 years I’d have thought the novelty would’ve worn off by now. DH said the same, that he feels so happy every time he gets into the drive, when he’s sitting in the back garden etc.

For those that live in pretty much their dream home in their dream location, does the novelty ever wear off? In 10 years time will we be pretty apathetic towards it all?

I worry so much that it’s all going to come crashing down so I’m really trying to enjoy it as I know I might not always feel as fortunate as I do now.

My shoulders relax driving down our lane to our house. In it 10 years this year and while there are things I'd change about the house the view will never get old.

ilikebungalows

I love your name! And am looking forward to my future purchase of a bungalow Grin

LyndaSnellsSniff · 23/04/2021 20:17

Sounds like you’ve hit the jackpot. Lucky, lucky you! It sounds like it brings you pleasure and contentment, so relax and enjoy it and I’m sure such positive feelings will last forever.

Now, if next door buy a sodding hot tub, things might change...

ilikebungalows · 23/04/2021 20:17

I sometimes dream of a two bedroom bungalow

No, my house is lovely - but massive and it did wear off in the first lockdown with 6 people in in and no cleaner once a week!

AngstyMom · 23/04/2021 20:18

You have to be stealthy for it to be a stealth boast, OP...

AgeLikeWine · 23/04/2021 20:18

@MrsGRamsay

You’ve got a milder strain of ‘Paradise Syndrome’ as coined by the zillionaire twat; David Stewart of former Eurythmics fame.

All will be ok unless next door gets a helipad or swimming pool and then you’re fucked; you’ll be commissioning plans for Russian Oligarch Notting Hill stylie triple storied basement - including car lift for your Ferrari(s) / McLaren(s).

Given that my neighbours are cows, that’s somewhat unlikely. Grin

It's a combination of the weather, that Friday feeling and the chilled white wine OP.

But I felt exactly like that tonight about our home and we've been here 15 years!

Candycane57 · 23/04/2021 20:21

I love my house- it fits me, dh, a 4yo and twin 2yos and we have another baby on the way. I love having extra space, the garden is surrounded by fields and we have few neighbours. But I do get bored of the decor fairly often. We've lived here almost 7 years and I still think it's our forever home.

PegasusReturns · 23/04/2021 20:21

That sounds lovely OP Smile

I think it depends on what sort of person you are. I’m always striving, wanting more. It’s a character flaw so yes for me it wears off very quickly.

Objectively I live in a fabulous house. It’s everything I could have dreamed of ten years ago but am I content? Nope! Planning the next big move.

MatildaTheCat · 23/04/2021 20:21

We’ve lived in our house for almost 20 years and I was so amazed that we’d been able to buy such a great house ( surburban semi but big and light). I still love the house and we’ve made some great improvements.

It’s really far too big for us now but we like the space. Unfortunately a very noisy family have moved in a few doors down and that’s begun to make me a bit less happy because our garden in the nicest room in the house in the summer.

Mrsmadevans · 23/04/2021 20:21

We live opposite a beautiful mountain and we have lived here for 26 years and always thank our lucky stars. In fact the view was the main reason we bought the house, that and the wonderful neighbourhood . Our Dds were able to get into the best Primary school as we were in the catchment area for it. Love it here . Gone up in price x 5 but we will never sell.

Listener2021 · 23/04/2021 20:22

I still can't believe we have a garden big enough for an apple tree and a silver birch, 25 years in. The house is just 70s breeze block and the living room carpet is worn down to the canvas in one place, but its ours, and detached. Thankful for that every day.

TheVolturi · 23/04/2021 20:22

Lived in our house 12 years, not posh but I still love it and feel grateful for it.

DreamDancing · 23/04/2021 20:24

I love our home and garden.
It’s around 180 years old and I feel part of it’s interesting history.
A custodian of it.
The past year has made us appreciate it even more.
We’re grateful to our home for helping keeping us sane and safe.
It sounds trite, but we appreciate it every day despite all the maintenance and upkeep.

Confusedandshaken · 23/04/2021 20:24

Not here. We've lived in this house 14 years and I'm still dazzled by the space and mod cons. I love it. I sit in the evening with a cup of tea and gaze around our lovely living room and it's like a dream that I live in a house like this.

puppychaos · 23/04/2021 20:26

This is such a lovely read. We moved rural 1.5 months ago, it's a small cottage but with a huge garden. I got to hang out washing for the first time in my adult life yesterday (always lived in flats!) and I spend so much time outside. I never want this feeling to wear off, it's lovely that it sounds like it stays Smile

macshoto · 23/04/2021 20:26

Been here 11 years and the answer is that I don't think it will ever wear off. My wife finds winter hard here - too dark, too much rain - and too far from old friends - but I don't think I will ever tire of our farm courtyard and being surrounded by our own land.

It's a lot of work, and takes plenty of upkeep, but peace and quiet, the birdsong, the little lambs bounding around the fields, ducks raising broods on the pond, and the view down the valley from the kitchen door are things I will always appreciate.

Slipperfairy · 23/04/2021 20:28

I love, love,, love my house and close, but we have to move cos it's just not big enough for 2 growing dc. Extension out of the question for various reasons. I feel sick when I come home and see the for sale sign and am terrified we won't find another like this. The houses I would like to live in are a good 50000 above our top budget.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 23/04/2021 20:28

I think this is a lovely OP.
I have a great house. Large 4 bed detached, big garden, lovely street, we’ve decorated nicely etc. I don’t love it though, despite all its qualities. I’m hoping our next move will be to a house we really really love, and not just to a house that ticks the right boxes at the time.

VonWeasel · 23/04/2021 20:30

Still get the wow feeling whenever I walk up to where I live now and feel incredibly content. It's not fancy or big but it's really sweet and cosy. It's also peaceful and you can hear birds! I was speaking to my neighbour about this yesterday and he said that 30+ years of living here, it still makes him really happy whever he walks up to his house.

TillyTopper · 23/04/2021 20:31

We changed from a traditional 3 bed semi to a modern, 4 bed house with ensuites - very white and very minimalist and much bigger. We got rid of most of the furniture and really changed everything up. We moved almost 3 years ago but I have not got tired of it and I don't think I ever will! I still feel really lucky to live here and actually it's saved money as we prefer to stay here over hotels sometimes.

GilbertsLuckySocks · 23/04/2021 20:31

The only Zen you’ll find at the top of the mountain is the Zen you take up there with you.

kickergoes · 23/04/2021 20:31

Oh I hope not. We achieved our dream home 6 months ago, I walk around it every day thinking how much I love it and how I can't believe it's ours. I hope I don't ever take it for granted.

Missushbb · 23/04/2021 20:31

I just don't get this. I love my house in worried I won't?! Ffs
