Does the novelty of living in a nice house ever wear off?

Before I start, I promise this isn’t a stealth boast, and actually, to a lot of people, our house won’t even be that nice.

We moved 2 years ago to a decent sized house with a big garden in a ‘chocolate box’ rural village. I feel so lucky every day when I drive home to live where we do.

However, I was sitting in the garden just now with a glass of wine, looking at the pretty (field) views, it was so peaceful, silent apart from birdsong and I just felt this overwhelming sense of gratitude.

I get it every time I drive into the drive and after 2 years I’d have thought the novelty would’ve worn off by now. DH said the same, that he feels so happy every time he gets into the drive, when he’s sitting in the back garden etc.

For those that live in pretty much their dream home in their dream location, does the novelty ever wear off? In 10 years time will we be pretty apathetic towards it all?

I worry so much that it’s all going to come crashing down so I’m really trying to enjoy it as I know I might not always feel as fortunate as I do now.

I love my house, it’s my happy place , I’m very content in it, I have lived in it 14 years and still think it is a stunning home, it was a completely renovation job took us six months to do before we could move in. But the best bit is the south west facing garden.

I’ve lived in this house 32 years and am still happy with it
I would love a new kitchen and bathroom and various other home improvements but still happy overall
I sat in the garden today next to the pond and there was total silence apart from a few noises from nature
It’s the peace and rural ness that keeps me here along with lovely neighbours

That's amazing @Meruem, all of that for a very good price and secure tenancy for the rest of your life. If you ever can't afford to pay you will get help. Win-win-win. I think you win the thread!

Thatsnotmyfacemynoseistoobig · 24/04/2021 23:14

I love my house, 2.5 years on.

Fastforwardtospring · 24/04/2021 23:18

I loved my house 21 years ago when we bought as a doer upper, it’s been a great family house, 4 bed, 3 reception, large garden, front and back and I’ve loved raising my family here, DC 10 min walk to school, but I’m done with it now, things need doing again and I’ve lost interest, I want a smaller house and garden closer to the sea. When last DC finishes 6th form, we’re moving to hopefully to another renovation project.

Germolenequeen · 24/04/2021 23:18

YABU for saying it's not a stealth boast 🙄

Vanfanran · 24/04/2021 23:25

I love my home, 15 years on. It's my happy place and I feel like my shoulders loosen when I pull in after work. It does need some updating but its clean, tidy and always smells fresh. I can't imagine living anywhere else

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 24/04/2021 23:30

We have a Mediterranean style patio

In the spring and summer my heart lifts every time i step on to it

We maybe moving soon and although i love my house the patio is the thing I’ll miss the most

buttons766 · 24/04/2021 23:45

Yes if it's not a detached and your amazing neighbours have the audacity to move 😬😂

Fespital · 24/04/2021 23:48

Not my house per se as it's not my 'dream' house despite living in it for a decade. But my village yes. It always feels like I'm coming home and everything will be alright. There's a long hill I climb before turning into the village and I love to look up and know I'm nearly home. And that's after a decade.

SquarePeggyLeggy · 24/04/2021 23:51

Well we live in our dream home, and have done for four years. After time away, I love to come home. It’s lovely and clean and by far the nicest home my husband and I have ever lived in.
We are now trying to buy an even nicer home with pool etc. I also feel our recent dramatic change in circumstances to be able to this (5 years ago we rented a small flat from my PIL at a reduced rent) might all disappear and it’s not really my home. I can’t believe I live in a place like this and if we get the new house, I will feel that even more.
So while I love the house and hated the flat, I still don’t feel a comfortable attachment to it if that makes sense?

@Nanalisa60

Ive got a SW-facing garden. I thought the ideal was a South-facing. I get the sun most of the day but from evening the sun starts retreating and I have to keep moving the sun loungers back! Obviously only on a few days of the year, unfortunately 🥺
I'm not sure if the sun is in the garden in the morning as I'm never awake or alert enough at that time. What is the situation in your house and why do you like a SW-facing garden?

SquarePeggyLeggy · 24/04/2021 23:54

So in summary, the novelty hasn’t worn off at all, and such novelty has made me feel quite insecure! But it’s still better to feel like that in a lovely place versus a crummy flat.

pinkhousesarebest · 24/04/2021 23:58

We have been in ours for six years and I still wake up every morning feeling thankful. This is us now until Windy Pines beckons. Anywhere else would be such a disappointment.

pinkhousesarebest · 25/04/2021 00:12

Although definitely not everyone's idea of heaven. Our friends thought it too remote and thought it funn'y that none of our furniture matched ( I spend my life in French brocantes). One man's meat and all that..

Lucyeleven · 25/04/2021 00:16

We had our house built for us and I love it so much. Can’t imagine being anywhere else!

SneezyGonzalez · 25/04/2021 01:01

Sounds like it’s the garden/rural location more than the house. If you had a smaller house in the same location would you still love it?

Mamanyt · 25/04/2021 01:31

Some assuredly do, but many, many never lose that lovely sense of "I am exactly where I want to be!" There may be changes you want to make down the road, and probably should, but if you have a heart filled with peace, and gratitude, that feeling will probably never fade away.

Middersweekly · 25/04/2021 10:15

I do like our house but we bought it based on size and the fact we have 4DC and 6 small dogs. It is set over 4 floors which I try my best to keep on top of but I do get quite resentful about it as it’s not the easiest home to keep clean! I feel like I spend most of my day cleaning it rather than enjoying it. If there were less people & dogs it would probably be fine but sometimes I wish I lived in a tiny cottage/ apartment that didn’t require much upkeep! I do like the Mountain View out of our bedroom window though!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 25/04/2021 10:37

This I can relate to - nothing like a new house. Staying more than 5 years makes it cluttered and boring. Can’t wait until Monday to see if our offer on our house (number 7 in our marriage) is accepted. 🥰

Toomuchtrouble4me · 25/04/2021 10:39

That would be cool - I’d love to do that but the decision making must be hell! I’d never sleep!

mrscatmad31 · 25/04/2021 11:00

Only been in our house two years but I feel the same, so happy and grateful to live here, it's nothing amazing to most people I'm sure but we face fields, I just love the area and the fact we have our own garden

Whatawaytogo · 25/04/2021 11:16

Almost ten years and my home is like my third child!

When I come back from holiday, I just adore walking in.

My friend owns a chain of local estate agents, and he said that it is a “jewel” of a property.

Whatawaytogo · 25/04/2021 11:17

In all honesty
If I won the lottery, I wouldn’t move

Whatawaytogo · 25/04/2021 11:20

@HmmmmmmInteresting

I have a complete south facing garden
It’s a blissful sun trap. No moving around to find shade at any point of the day.
