AIBU to think school children should not be taught that there are 3 biological sexes and be shown cartoons of shagging hyenas?

This resource apparently originated from TES via a company called EC Publishing. Parents need to be really aware of crap their kids are being taught, much of it endorsed or available from respected platforms like TES and PSHE Association. It's unscientific, its a safeguarding concern and it contravenes DfE guidelines on the teaching of RSE material.

Other resources I have seen from what I believe to be the same provider teaches kids about polyamory and shows a cartoon of 3 hyenas having sex. It suggests that humans were all polyamorous until we started worrying about STIs:

There is nothing in the curriculum that suggests we have to teach kids about polyamory.

Parents need to be asking exactly what their schools are teaching and need to see the actual resources. And if they are teaching stuff like this then parents need to complain to the school. SSAUK has a helpful guide showing how to complain: safeschoolsallianceuk.net/2021/04/16/how-to-complain-to-your-childs-school/

There are loads of loads of inappropriate resources being used in schools. Resources from Barnardos, NSPCC, Childline,, and other so called respected organisations. The Department for Education is clear they don't check or police school resources, it's up to schools to behave responsible and parents to complain if they are not. The issue is, how many parents on this site now exactly what schools are teaching their kids?

AIBU to think school children should not be taught that there are 3 biological sexes and be shown cartoons of shagging hyenas?

Yes, fortunately there were a few children in the class who challenged this quite well by all accounts, so I didn't need to step in on DC's behalf!

PiglingBlandIII · 22/04/2021 17:16

It is extremely concerning that this completely inaccurate and unscientific content is being taught in schools (and bought unquestioningly by some adults).

I saw an American senator announce today quite confidently that there are 6 sexes - there isn't even a consistent message!

The Endocrine Society recently posted a scientific paper that confirms that sex is binary and immutable (I wonder how they felt about having to create a whole paper to essentially say that the earth is round)

Sadly, in schools that have adopted this stance, there seems to be a corresponding lack of regard for safeguarding.

They have often been misinformed by the likes of Stonewall that it is ok for female children to choose to use the boys toilets (despite an av. 200 rapes per yr in schools) and vice versa. Their policies will often state that it is fine for a male child to be placed in a dormitory with girls on a school trip for example.

It is great that you have picked this up and you are definitely not being unreasonable.

Have you worked out how you can challenge this with the school, maybe starting with the governors? This is against government guidelines and could affect their Ofsted rating if safeguarding is not taken seriously.

YANBU. There are so very few intersex people born I think about 1 in a million or even less. I'm glad my children have left school. Why has this been allowed? Is it compulsory? If so you should ask that your dc do not take part in this particular lesson. I done that with my dcs I didn't want them to be taught the messed up ways of sex education. They didn't mind. They were happy and said to their friends I'm glad we wasn't there.

LastRoloIsMine · 22/04/2021 17:26

YANBU.

Also when did it become OK to use people with a medical condition as some sort of trophy? Not to mention that posters ignorance surrounding DSD conditions. Many people with DSD suffer various health comications but none are a mystical 3rd sex.

Eyevorbig0ne · 22/04/2021 17:35

Yanbu. It's crazy.
I'm in the very delicate situation of being gender critical with a teen who identifies as trans 😳

Interesting article here from the Scientific American which may add to the discussion it specifically speaks about DSD.

And that Wiki article is about gender, not sex.

It's still not a third sex. There is no third sex involved in reproduction just big gametes from the female and small gametes from the male. People with DSDs can be identified as one of those two sexes. Stop being so offensive.
Erkrie · 22/04/2021 17:56

KilljoysDutch: There's still only two sexes. That's it. People with DSDs are still only one of two sexes.

And you post an article about a person who has some of the DNA of her dead twin.
I've read it before. And it is interesting indeed. But not interesting in the way I suspect you think it is.

good point Sunset. I think this is where a lot of confusion is generated. Sex is not gender, gender is not sex but the conflation of the two creates problems.

Take for example the idea that a person takes on a particular gender identity. Sometimes this is a 'male' gender identity, sometimes it is something completely different and is 'non binary' or 'cloud gender' etc.

None of these identities alter a person's sex but in some cases like a 'female' gender identity, the idea currently being pushed is that the gender identity overrides the person's sex and access to female only sex segregated services is expected, but on the basis of gender identity rather than sex.

This doesn't make sense in the real world. I think we all need to take a step back and be very clear that gender is not sex and should never be allowed to confuse boundaries or override sex.

It is extremely important that schools understand this (I'm worried that many do not) as sex is the determinant of everything, from who could get pregnant and who could be the impregnator to who will get discriminated against on the basis of their sex in STEM for eg. and who won't.

Let's push back and re-establish sex as the important factor and ensure that everyone understands that it is binary and immutable (are we really in 2021???). Gender is a construct that consists of a set of stereotypes that usually work to the detriment of girls and needs to be removed as a concept.

OmniversalSpecies2021 · 22/04/2021 18:02

There are two sexes - male and female.
A person can be physically one sex yet feel either more masculine/feminine - THAT is GENDER.

Those of you who have bought into the farce of 'gender reveal' as a way of announcing the SEX of your baby are contributing towards this brainwashing and corrupt programming.

Even Angels communicate either as their make or female aspects......

Sindragosan · 22/04/2021 18:03

To be honest, if these resources are aimed at 13/14 year olds, does anyone think they're not aware of porn and have seen worse things than cartoon hyenas?

MammaSchwifty · 22/04/2021 18:04

the only time I've heard of someone being both sexes, ie, having both male and female gonads, it was an extremely rare case of mosaiscm.

Even if they have does this make it ok to peddle this stuff in schools? I think not.

I think everyone needs to be realistic and give relevant advice to teenagers, about consent, boundaries and that a range of sexualities exist and is ok.

At 13/14, you need to be moving beyond "when a man and a woman love each other very much...."

LastRoloIsMine · 22/04/2021 19:42

kill

What is this 3rd sex?

Male.
Female
????

If there is a 3rd sex it has a name what is it?

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 22/04/2021 20:00

^At 13/14, you need to be moving beyond "when a man and a woman love each other very much...."^

To be honest, there's enough in there to unpack for 13/14 year olds as it is, without going into unnecessary weird hyena threesome places.

13-14 year olds need to know:

That porn isn't real and can be harmful to a relationship
Internet safety and protecting against revenge porn
Menstrual cycle and other puberty changes
Consent and boundaries
Sexual intercourse that results in pregnancy
STDs and how to protect against them
Contraception methods and their effectiveness at the above
How to risk assess situations/avoid risky situations.
How to report illegal/unwanted sexual behaviour.

Anyone who teaches will tell you that's enough to be getting on with. There's got to be room in the curriculum for Maths and things you know.

And they have David Attenborough for animal kingdom bonking.

RabbitOfCaerbannog · 22/04/2021 20:01

Agree wholeheartedly Lady and that relationships are built on mutual respect.
