To ask what is NOT okay to buy second hand

I try to buy second hand stuff as much as possible. I need some new towels-are second hand towels unacceptable?

I think second hand knickers would be a line drawn and towels have probably been just as close if not closer to someone's Front Bottom.

Where do you personally draw the line?

I wouldn’t buy secondhand, although we acquired some from a relative when she died.
Normally I would buy them, then when they are a little tired they are relegated to hair dyeing. Once really threadbare, they are ripped up for use as floor cloths and steam mop heads Etc. they never get wasted!

JanuaryJonez · 22/04/2021 12:59

I was told years ago that children's car seats should never be bought second hand.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/04/2021 14:31

My flat is furnished second hand Solid wood wardrobe etc but new electrical and mattress
I buy all my tops/ shirts on eBay( love Brakeburn for quality)
I just use antibacterial laundry cleanser
Would never buy underwear, but bought second hand baby equipment for all mine except car seat, which I used for each child

zzzebra · 22/04/2021 14:41

I've sold my towels 2nd hand and had lots of interested. They were only used on the guest en suite so had little use.

I've brought second hand bras, but wouldn't buy secondhand pants.

Only other things I can think that i wouldn't get 2nd hand are mattress, car seat and bike helmet.

Springersrock · 22/04/2021 14:43

I’d never buy safety stuff like helmets or car seats 2nd hand as you’d never know if they’d been in an accident or dropped or something.

Not clothes, undies, towels, etc for use at home.

I’ve bought things like a pile of towels to keep in the car for muddy dog purposes, some curtains which I loved to cut up and turned into a quilt. Furniture and reupholstered it. I needed a load chintzy China which was only going to be used once for my Mum’s birthday afternoon tea, so I donated it back after we finished with it

QuantumofSolace · 22/04/2021 14:46

Riding hats - you can never tell if they have been dropped or undergone a fall - and can look perfect from the outside while the inside "crumple zone" is crushed.

yellowmuma · 22/04/2021 17:24

Hmmm maybe shoes. Id buy if they’d only been worn once. Wouldn’t buy underwear. Or pillows.

I buy tons second hand for my son and myself, hot wash and it’s fine 😄

kattekitt · 22/04/2021 17:26

I was wondering why everyone was saying car seats, I mean what on earth are people doing whilst driving that means you couldn't sit in the same seat. Then the penny dropped! In my defence I am taking strong medication today.

I just wondered how everyone could afford brand new cars and even then they are sat in before you get them!

I think I shall go for a lie down

Bebethany · 22/04/2021 17:33

Do you insist on new towels in hotels?

Fluffmum · 22/04/2021 17:40

There are cheap towels in Asda. 8 quid for a bath sheet

cherish123 · 22/04/2021 17:41

Not acceptable - pants, underwear, swimwear, sanitary towels (yes, I have actually seen them advertised 🤮)...
Personally, I wouldn't buy secondhand towels. They are not particularly expensive. I would not buy secondhand clothes, though. I feel they smell, even when they have been washed.

Fluffmum · 22/04/2021 17:42

Mattresses , towels, any makeup

seensome · 22/04/2021 17:42

Shoes
Watches
Jewellery

Ericaequites · 22/04/2021 17:43

If they have been worn for more than for a special occasion, never hand down children’s shoes, even within a family. Worn shoes fit other feet poorly, leading to a lifetime of poor foot and back health.

yellowmuma · 22/04/2021 17:45
@aintnothinbutagstring, you could have been describing my thoughts and spending habits entirely. I could not understand the long queues outside Primark after lockdown. I would far rather have quality brands from eBay, very often new with or without tags, for the same price as l could have bought rubbish from Primark.
I love your judgemental tone for Primark shoppers. So kind. 😬 Some people (me being one of them) can only really afford places like Primark. I often find eBay actually quite expensive!

HibouMilou · 22/04/2021 18:10

Shoes.

SandAndSea · 22/04/2021 18:16

I think the 'second hand' label can be quite broad; for example, I've seen brand new packets of underwear at car boot sales. So, with that in mind, I wouldn't buy anything which looks tired. I have bought a lot of second hand stuff but no one would really know if they came in my house.

For safety reasons, I think you need to be very careful with electrical stuff too.

Alis25 · 22/04/2021 18:21

I’ve always drawn the line at secondhand underwear but since buying secondhand trainers that I caught my first ever fungal infection from I now draw the line at footwear. Seriously NOT worth it! It took about three years to sort out.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 22/04/2021 18:25

@DDIJ

I suppose it's no different from a second hand penis.
I've never bought one of those, but I've borrowed plenty 😃
Franklyfrost · 22/04/2021 18:27

I’m not sure there’s anything I wouldn’t buy second hand. There must be something can’t be adequately cleaned or checked but can’t think what it is. I’ve got a great selection of second hand pants (from a friend who got fat) and some second hand cloth pads (from eBay). A good wash or a bleach is going to kill anything.

Leontine · 22/04/2021 18:31

I’ve had a second hand mattress, I wasn’t happy about it but I felt that I couldn’t say no.

Sparrowfeeder · 22/04/2021 18:50

Knickers, tights, socks.

Everything else I have bought second hand - including bras, bikinis, swimming costumes, towels and sheets. Dogs, tesla, houses, some furniture also second hand.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/04/2021 18:53

I bought a second hand bikini from someone I knew. I don't see the problem. I washed them and she had also washed them before giving them to me.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/04/2021 19:01

"If you're looking at something antique, there's really not much point fussing about whether it's fur or ivory. Your options are use it or bin it - nothing you do is going to bring the animal back, and nor is it adding to demand."

Other people wouldn't know it was second hand though so you might get grief.

Violinist64 · 22/04/2021 19:01

@yellowmuma no judgment on people buying what they can afford and l have bought from Primark myself in the past. I have not always had a great deal of money but Primark quality is not the best and the idea of people in poor countries working in sweatshops for us to buy cheap, disposable clothing concerns me too as does the effect our throwaway society has on the environment. My point is that l would rather buy an item of clothing from a charity shop or on Ebay. I would rather have one piece of good quality, lightly worn clothing than ten cheap brand new items of inferior quality clothes. The remark about the queues was because l don't particularly like looking at clothes in very crowded places, particularly at the moment. Each to their own.
