To ask what is NOT okay to buy second hand

I try to buy second hand stuff as much as possible. I need some new towels-are second hand towels unacceptable?

I think second hand knickers would be a line drawn and towels have probably been just as close if not closer to someone's Front Bottom.

Where do you personally draw the line?

@BigWoollyJumpers

Interesting thread. I have been wondering what to do with a lot of my recently passed away DM's linens in particular. Lots of fairly new towels, as I bought a load from JL for her last year.... I might have those actually.

How about a huge stack of antique Italian linen? Bed linen, tablecloths, napkins, all heavy linen, embroidered, or with lace inserts? Does anyone even bother with linen anymore?

Antique Italian linen ... oh glory, yes please! I'm sorry you've lost your mum. There must be specialist places for auctioning. In fact, I've googled for you. There seems to be quite a lot of options. Eg have a look here www.1818auctioneers.co.uk/departments/textiles-vintage-clothing/

Just for everyone’s reference, if anybody is offered a second hand maxi cosi car seat, they will collect it and test it for safety for a small fee.

Holly60 · 08/05/2021 18:29

I came on literally to say knickers.

I haven't bought second hand knickers but I did inherit all my mothers and wore them in her honour :-) It was really nice and comforting.

My mother collected pretty knickers all her life, they were her one self indulgence and the subject of much family teasing. After she died we sorted out all her clothes to go to a charity; obviously not underwear and I was supposed to bin that. But I just hadn't got the heart to throw out her beloved knickers so I took them home as a keepsake. All downhill from there...

Mattresses, pillows, duvets (bed bug risk)

Anything that can’t be washed, like sofas

Underwear including leggings

Jeans (they’ve been stretched to fit someone else’s figure unless just tried on)

Shoes/boots (can’t wash in machine) may smell of dog, smoke, fox poo etc

Electrical stuff (safety)

Personal grooming stuff

Never buy a riding hat second hand as it may have a crack in it from a previous fall which is only visible underneath the padding.

Ultraopaque · 07/09/2021 11:42

I buy old armchairs and have them stripped and re-upholstered.

Rubyupbeat · 07/09/2021 11:49

Undies
Footwear
Trousers, Jean's (been round someone's hot crutch)
Night wear
Bed linen
Towels.....
In fact I wouldn't wear or use anything 2nd hand.
