To ask what is NOT okay to buy second hand

minddeter · 21/04/2021 14:09

I try to buy second hand stuff as much as possible. I need some new towels-are second hand towels unacceptable?

I think second hand knickers would be a line drawn and towels have probably been just as close if not closer to someone's Front Bottom.

Where do you personally draw the line?

Condoms

exaltedwombat · 24/04/2021 11:52

I wonder if the people who are horrified at a well-washed garment touching their 'front bottom' were always quite so scrupulous about someone they'd just met on Tinder?

Bebethany · 24/04/2021 18:14

What a lovely post Raspberrycoulis, I have 2 new duvet covers and the other 5 are 2nd hand beautiful Irish linen and Cotten. Every single pillow case I have is old but still bright white.

I bought a long bolster pillow case a while back from Etsy, still in it 1950’s box. Beautiful

Seventrees · 24/04/2021 18:18

YABU for using the word front bottom. WTF? Is a woman't vulva so disgusting it's unmentionable?
To answer your question - everything is ok if washed, and preferably not stained.

@mrbreezeet1l have just bought six brand new without tags Joe Browns tops and tunics for £24.50 on Ebay. I consider that a fantastic bargain as if l had bought them direct from Joe Browns they could easily have cost around £200. For everyone saying there are no bargains to be had on Ebay and charity shops these days, there are - you just have to look for them and be in the right place at the right time.

I'd say buying sports clothing second hand and expecting it to be in new condition is unreasonable. I sold 3 pairs of Lululemon running leggings in a bundle for £10 each on ebay, so £30 in total, to one buyer. Described as good, used condition.

Cue a complaint about one pair having a loose thread (not a rip, a single loose thread which you couldn't even see in the supposed photo of it she sent me) and she wanted a discount. I pointed to my terms and conditions specifying no returns, assuming she was trying to pull a fast one, so she reported me to ebay, who told her to post back all 3 pairs for a refund. She produced some receipt of posting but the leggings never arrived and I had to refund her anyway. Hope she's proud of herself.

I've given up selling my second hand stuff on ebay now and just bin it now instead because of her (local charity shops get too many donations).

Maggiesfarm · 24/04/2021 19:12

Towels are OK if they can go on a very hot wash. Deffo not knickers but I've never seen those for sale second hand.

I wouldn't buy a second hand microwave.

Years ago I bought a second hand vacuum cleaner when hard up and it lasted not much more than five minutes!

Lollypop4 · 24/04/2021 19:14

Im really fussy and wouldnt have second hand clothes, so 100% not towels.
I wouldnt buy a matress either.

Pottedpalm · 24/04/2021 19:20

Toothbrushes

Lollypop4 · 24/04/2021 19:21

@aliensprig

Everything apart from pants! Washing machines are pretty efficient these days Wink I even have second hand cloth nappies! Absolute bargain off ebay.
Surely nappies are as bad as pants!!!
MirandaMarple · 24/04/2021 19:24

Nearly all my furniture is second hand because I don't like most stuff that's readily available/made in China.

I worked in a charity shop and the only stuff I won't buy is shoes. Never had knickers donated. We sent underwear and socks to a homeless charity.

Chocobudbrownies · 24/04/2021 19:26

@NewYearNewTwatName

toilet paper
This had me properly giggling
Bearnecessity · 24/04/2021 19:33

I was running the local football club's boot fair stall at a town fete when one of the lads mum's presented me with some of the mankiest looking lads pants to sell....😳

Bebethany · 24/04/2021 19:38

?????what is the message here??

Bearnecessity · 24/04/2021 19:40

What are you struggling with Bebethany?

SleepingStandingUp · 24/04/2021 19:40

Surely nappies are as bad as pants!!! People aren't running them under a cold tap and posting them. The market in second hand cloth nappies is HUGE. They're all well washed and clean and hygienic

Darlingx · 24/04/2021 19:43

Talking of pants when I was a brownie I was sorting stuff for the Church jumble sale and someone had donated pants complete with pooh stripe Confused

ghostsliveinmyhouse · 24/04/2021 19:45

I wouldn't buy the following second hand:

Knickers
Bras
Socks
Bedding
Mattress
Leggings
Sex toys

Dobbyafreeelf · 24/04/2021 19:52

Secondhand cot mattresses make excellent dog beds! Usually have had very little wear and far superior to any dog beds I have ever bought and really easy to keep clean!

Proudboomer · 24/04/2021 19:57

I don’t know any charity shops that accept donations of used pants or socks but they will accept good quality bras and swim wear.

The only thing I won’t buy second hand is shoes. I already have enough problems with my feet without wearing badly fitting shoes.
Our local hospice has a very popular shop that sells nothing but wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses. Seems like a great idea as you can buy an expensive dress for the fraction of the price then gift it back to them.

LovingBob · 24/04/2021 20:02

Things like car seats and cycle helmets in case they have unseen damage

Barnardos childrens’ shops used to accept children’s’ underwear. Thank goodness, I would have been bankrupt after potty training our two. So many pairs that you just didn’t want to take home and wash after day out accidents Grin.
Shame if they’ve stopped selling them. Not much modern detergent can’t cope with.

True, guess I should have said, it's not always the bargain it used to be.

Gilly12345 · 02/05/2021 18:34

I only buy books, dvds, very decent clothes (White Stuff, Joules, Crew Clothing) and sometimes ornaments (probably house clearance) other than that no and definitely not towels or underwear 😲🤢

mathanxiety · 03/05/2021 22:56

@Violinist64 I agree.
I scored a Modalu Pippa handbag in almost perfect condition last week in my local second hand shop. It cost me $4.99.
