To ask what is NOT okay to buy second hand

I try to buy second hand stuff as much as possible. I need some new towels-are second hand towels unacceptable?

I think second hand knickers would be a line drawn and towels have probably been just as close if not closer to someone's Front Bottom.

Where do you personally draw the line?

I once bought a pair of jeans in a charity shop without trying them on, and got home to find they had actual period blood in them. Not a stain, actual fresh blood.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2021 19:41

You can pick and mix on MN...

FelicityBeedle · 21/04/2021 19:44

@BigWoollyJumpers
Donate it! I for one am always looking cor nice linen in charity shops, sometimes for beds or tablecloths, or to further embroidery myself, or sometimes for sewing. It depends on if you can stand the idea of someone maybe chopping it up

KateKeeper · 21/04/2021 19:44

I meant to say, sex (particularly with a stranger - but with anyone really) has got to be less hygienic than buying clean things second hand. Particularly if you wash them (the second hand things, not the sexual partners obviously)

mathanxiety · 21/04/2021 19:46

You can sanitise footwear you buy second hand. There are lots of directions online.

FelicityBeedle · 21/04/2021 19:48

@BigWoollyJumpers I see I’ve been beaten to the linen advice! Do give me a message if you’re thinking of selling

Supersimkin2 · 21/04/2021 19:49

Duvets. The yellow patches are not age.

I volunteer in a charity shop.

poppycat10 · 21/04/2021 19:51

Shoes, mattresses, underwear and car seat/cycle helmet.

Shoes because they mould to someone else's feet and it's not good to wear someone else's. However, if I just wanted a pair for one event like a wedding I might buy a second hand pair.

LadyOfTheRingsS · 21/04/2021 19:53

@ftm202020

Moon cups!
😂😂😂😂😂
minddeter · 21/04/2021 19:58

@lljkk

I am not sure I've seen 2nd hand mattresses for sale anywhere. I have bought or would use almost everything listed here. No regrets.

Not sex toys. I mean, I'd flog mine, but not sure I want yours.

I'd love to flog my mooncup when done with it. Must be a pervy website for that somewhere.

My second hand bed came with a mattress, that I use. I was moving house and I had a mattress but it had dampened in storage-I didnt know this so was very grateful for the mattress even though I hadnt planned on using it. I've never given it a second thought really? It was very clean and I did believe the seller that the bed had hardly been used. As a PP said-we use towels others have used whenever we stay in a hotel, same with beds I guess!

@Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout

Hotel towels have been all over loads of people. If you are happy to use hotel towels are second hand towels any different? Underwear a def no no.
Exactly my thoughts
MoonlightFlitwick · 21/04/2021 20:04

Depends how poor you are.

NanooCov · 21/04/2021 20:16

My personal list would be:
Underwear
Bedding
Mattresses
Pillows
Towels (not from a hygiene point of view, I just think they would be worn and unlikely to be soft)
Swimming costumes (kids have had them handed down from family but I wouldn't buy from charity shop)
Tupperware (they just get indelibly grubby after a while)

Anything else would be condition based for me. I'd be unlikely to buy anything that would be difficult to thoroughly clean though.

MrsSugar · 21/04/2021 20:23

Knickers
Tights
Pillows
Mattress
Swim wear
Sex toys

Moonface123 · 21/04/2021 20:27

Cycle or motorbike helmet.

sqirrelfriends · 21/04/2021 20:30

Toothbrush
Intimate items
Car seats

Also anything that can't be washed properly:
Mattress
Rugs
Pillows/duvet
Shoes

tedsletterofthelaw · 21/04/2021 20:30

Underwear and mattress would probably be the only things I'd draw the line at (excluding the obvious/jokey suggestions on here)

I love charity shops and FB marketplace!

Cindy87 · 21/04/2021 20:37

Mattresses, car seats, sex toys, moon cups, underwear, toothbrushes... Think that's it.

Violinist64 · 21/04/2021 20:40

@aintnothinbutagstring, you could have been describing my thoughts and spending habits entirely. I could not understand the long queues outside Primark after lockdown. I would far rather have quality brands from eBay, very often new with or without tags, for the same price as l could have bought rubbish from Primark.

Bramblecrumble · 21/04/2021 20:41

I would say shoes because they mold to feet.

HTH1 · 21/04/2021 20:43

Sick bags

PurpleRainDancer · 21/04/2021 20:50

Pants

LolaSmiles · 21/04/2021 20:53

I avoid underwear/swimwear, anything intimate or personal care related and anything with safety implications. Most second hand things don't bother me as long as they're in good condition.

DenisetheMenace · 21/04/2021 20:55

Yep, knickers, maybe bras and manky looking shoes.

Happy with second hand everything else.

CathyorClaire · 21/04/2021 21:01

I'll have 'most anything second hand but I draw the line at any form of underwear and anything that's stained at the pits or inner crotch. The latter became a golden rule after a traumatic second-hand trew inspection of what transpired to be commado wear.

I'd also give renting sex toys (which is actually a thing) a swerve.
