Dog bite- I'm an idiot **warning - images of wounds**

Name changed and posting for traffic. This morning I prevented a dog from darting into a busy main road, found the owners house and returned her. I got a nasty bite got my efforts. I realise now I was stupid to pick the little thing up but it was instinct to prevent the dog being hit by a car.
The owner had left the house door open and the dog had wandered off. Both dog and owner are elderly.
I've been to A and E as directed by my GP and been patched up but boy it hurts. I've got two nasty puncture wounds to my hand and two lots of antibiotics.
I have some questions now the shock has worn off (I'm not good with blood and it was pouring and I was already feeling ropey due to something else).

Has anyone got experience of this and if so how long did it take to heal?

When did it stop hurting like a bastard?

Do I need to report this to the police or dog warden? The dog was obviously scared and bit me for a reason. I was stupid and I accept that. I just never considered it would bite me like that. I'm not a dog person but overcame my fear years ago now. I'm glad the dog is safe and the owner was very nice when I returned her home. I declined her offer of going inside to wash the round as was not far from home, and covid of course.

You poor old thing :( It does sound like you are in really good hands with that consultant and hopefully this will help sort things out.

CirclesWithinCircles · 23/04/2021 12:01

Oh my goodness, well at least the hospital are on the ball and hopefully getting it cleaned out under GA should resolve any issues. Hope it all goes well for you today!

ThanksThanksThanks

eejitgothurt · 23/04/2021 14:53

Lovely anaesthetist has been to see me and was really reassuring of how anxious I am about things so I'm getting a pre-medGrin I'll be good for nothing until tomorrow but I'll enjoy the sleep. I've got a banging headache which I assume is dehydration and caffeine withdrawal as I've not had a cup of tea for over 24 hours. No chocolate either. Sad times. Always thinking positive though and I should lose a few pounds this week!

Sleep well :)

Caffeine headaches are the pits!

eejitgothurt · 23/04/2021 20:46

I've survived theatre and back on the ward but very very sore. I have an impressive bandage Grin

Aw good. Glad it went ok. I've been thinking about you. Hope you sleep well tonight Thanks Do they still think you can go home tomorrow?

eejitgothurt · 23/04/2021 21:14

I'm going home tomorrow no matter what! I need cuddles from my boy and the cats!
I'm hoping for some more good drugs and lots of sleep.
Nice big bandage 😁 my thumb and forefinger are totally numb at the moment but the wound hurts. It will feel much better by morning for sure. I'm still 🤯 at how much fuss this has caused. P

Good Lord, what a week you've had. Hope you get home tomorrow and that the pain eases asap Flowers - I'd have sent you virtual Wine but you probably won't be allowed any with antibiotics and painkillers. Get well soon.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 23/04/2021 21:41

I know! I was just telling DD what happened. She was 😲 Does the old lady with the dog know she's in hospital? Nightmare! What a story to tell hey?!

LadyEloise · 24/04/2021 10:48

Oh @eejitgothurt.Halo
I'm really sorry that your injury was so much more serious than your original post suggested.
You were so very kind and brave.
Here's hoping you'll get good karma out of all this. Thanks

eejitgothurt · 24/04/2021 12:56

I am home now and glad of it. I've got sutures and need to go back to fracture clinic in a week to have the wound checked. I still can't believe 3 nights in hospital and surgery for a dog bite. Crazy.
I think I will let the lady know what happened so that she's aware of how bad a dog bite can be and make sure Martha doesn't escape again,

Good that you're home OP.
In this country, about 22 people a day, many of them children, are admitted onto hospital wards with serious dog bite injuries.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 24/04/2021 13:15

Yay! Glad you're home. I think it's a good idea to have a word. I hope she doesn't feel too awful about it, but she defo needs to be aware. Best wishes for a speedy recovery from here. Thanks

DiddlyWiddly · 24/04/2021 13:39

@Flaxmeadow

Good that you're home OP. In this country, about 22 people a day, many of them children, are admitted onto hospital wards with serious dog bite injuries.
66 million people in the UK, 10 million estimated pet dogs in the UK, 22 people a day with dog bite injuries so roughly 7,920 people a year. So an absolutely minuscule proportion. Enough with the rabid dog hating Hmm
stayathomegardener · 24/04/2021 13:48

Oh no! Get well soon.

msby · 24/04/2021 13:57

So pleased you are home! Sounds silly but I have been thinking of you.

randomer · 24/04/2021 14:02

You have been so brave and selfless.Im be absolutely furious.

Flaxmeadow · 24/04/2021 14:10

No not just with dog bite injuries, that number is far higher. This is with dog bite injuries requiring admission onto a hospital ward. Many of them children, many requiring surgery, many with life changing injuries.

So an absolutely minuscule proportion.

Buy you think 8,000 surgeries, life changing injuries and life long trauma incidents a year is an acceptable number. I don't

Enough with the rabid dog hating

I don't hate any animal. I am commenting on what is happening and how dangerous dogs are, but I'm well aware of what I'm up against. The powerful dog lobby, resulting in time and time again dogs that bite are repeatedly returned back into the community. This problem is going to get worse, not better.

Daphnise · 24/04/2021 14:21

I'd like to say you did a very good thing, and must be a thoughtful and kind person.

Unfortunately your 'reward' was this unpleasant bite.

The pain will pass, and you have preventative treatment for infection risk which is good.

I'd let the matter rest there, I really don't think anything is to be achieved by taking it further.

Hope you recover soon.

DiddlyWiddly · 24/04/2021 14:25

When you consider that around 24% of the population have dogs which is around 15840000 people, 8,000 is a tiny percentage.
Really tiny.
You are always on here banging on about how dangerous dogs are and some are certainly, but when you look at the figures the risk is tiny.
The dog that bit OP (I’m so glad you are home now btw, hope it continues healing nicely and you feel much better soon) behaved as most scared animals would yet you were straight on calling for it to be PTS

AdaColeman · 24/04/2021 14:35

So pleased to hear that you are safely back home at last @eejitgothurt, how relieved you and your family must be. I hope you soon make a full recovery. Thanks

I do think you should inform the dog owner of your experience, to point out just how important it is to keep your pet dog under control at all times, to ensure the safety of others.

Flaxmeadow · 24/04/2021 14:50

You are always on here banging on about how dangerous dogs

Im not 'always' banging on about it, but so what if I was? Am I not allowed to comment on what's happening with legislation where I live? Laws to protect the public that are not being enforced. Dog 'experts', often dog lovers opposed to the law, repeatedly returning dangerous dogs back into my community

Ugh, I’m not going to continue de railing the thread but it’s clear from this and previous posts that you know very, very little about normal dog behaviour.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 24/04/2021 15:04

My cat bit me on the leg on the second day of having him. One of our other cats had got in the room where he was confined so we could do slow introductions.

I picked the old cat up and the new cat bit me on the ankle. There was blood everywhere and I had to go to minor injuries unit where they xrayed to see if the bone was chipped (it wasn’t). I has an infection where my leg swelled to twice it’s size and was on antibiotics. The bite site ached for a good few days

Animal bits can be really dangerous as they eat all sorts.

Hope the antibiotics kick in soon. Take painkillers if you need them.

I’d also try and sleep with my hand on a spare cushion or pillow so you don’t sleep on it.
