Dog bite- I'm an idiot **warning - images of wounds**

Name changed and posting for traffic. This morning I prevented a dog from darting into a busy main road, found the owners house and returned her. I got a nasty bite got my efforts. I realise now I was stupid to pick the little thing up but it was instinct to prevent the dog being hit by a car.
The owner had left the house door open and the dog had wandered off. Both dog and owner are elderly.
I've been to A and E as directed by my GP and been patched up but boy it hurts. I've got two nasty puncture wounds to my hand and two lots of antibiotics.
I have some questions now the shock has worn off (I'm not good with blood and it was pouring and I was already feeling ropey due to something else).

Has anyone got experience of this and if so how long did it take to heal?

When did it stop hurting like a bastard?

Do I need to report this to the police or dog warden? The dog was obviously scared and bit me for a reason. I was stupid and I accept that. I just never considered it would bite me like that. I'm not a dog person but overcame my fear years ago now. I'm glad the dog is safe and the owner was very nice when I returned her home. I declined her offer of going inside to wash the round as was not far from home, and covid of course.

I hope the IV antibiotics do the trick. I do wonder if hospitals get fed up with dealing with stuff that GPs have failed to deal with properly. Imagine ending up in hospital just from stopping a neighbour's dog ging onto the road!

DenisetheMenace · 21/04/2021 20:16

Good god that looks painful. The thanks you get for being kind.
The poor thing was probably terrified by the road and in those circumstances, especially as you said I think “little” thing, I wouldn’t report it to the authorities but I would show that to the owner and make it clear that if it happens again (ie dog being loose), you will.

Hope you feel much better soon X

BlueTiles · 21/04/2021 20:22

Wow, I'm no Dr but I didn't think your hand looked OK in the photos. I hope you feel better soon and I'm sure the dog's owners are so grateful. Flowers

BlueTiles · 21/04/2021 20:23

PS will you tell the dog's owners you ended up in hospital? It may incentivise them to put in a stairgate near the door or something.

eejitgothurt · 21/04/2021 20:27

I will no doubt see the neighbour of the owner who ran after me in passing as I often do. I'll tell him the gory details but don't want the lady to feel bad as she'd worried all day about me on Monday and was grateful I'd knocked on to let her know I was ok. Which I was on Monday.

Are you hallucinating OP?
AdaColeman · 21/04/2021 21:29

Yes, I'm rather concerned that the patient might be delirious! Nurse! Nurse!

Flaxmeadow · 21/04/2021 21:32

i would report the dog. Any dog that bites, under any ircumstances, should be reported

Hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

Dear god. Would you PTS a cat that bit in the same circumstances? Bearing it mind they are about the same size as a lot of small dogs and their bites are more likely to turn septic than a dog’s?
wingsnthat · 21/04/2021 22:46

Tbh I would definitely report the owner

Her dog was out of control which led to it biting someone. Had the owner been present this wouldn’t have happened

DiddlyWiddly · 21/04/2021 22:56

No, I have a very low tolerance normally for dog aggression/bad owners but I really think that would be very unfair.

This isn’t a stereotypical out of control dog, running and aggressing at people situation.
It was away from home and running into a road..

poshme · 21/04/2021 22:58

I'm So glad you went back to hospital OP. I've only just seen this and as soon as I saw the photo I was going to say A&E.

One of my DC had a dog bite that got infected and the swelling was just like that- he needed IV antibiotics for 4 days. It did all go down and heal without surgery.

Flaxmeadow · 21/04/2021 23:09

I'm not talking about cats. I'm talking about dogs. I would PTS any dog that bites.

Dogs used to be PTS immediately for this. What changed? I'll tell you what changed, people thinking dogs are fur babies, people not controlling these dangerous animals. Animlas that will attack unpredictably on sight and are esponsible for hospitalising children EVERY SINGLE DAY

Flaxmeadow · 21/04/2021 23:12

...and don't get me started on the dog lobby. Who convince courts, all the time, that a dog that repeatedly bites is safe to go back into the community. Dogs are allowed to bite us now and we all have to put up with it. That's the fucking insane situation we are in now

imnotprincessbubblegum · 21/04/2021 23:16

I have no clue what the answers are but just wanted to say well done for saving that little dogs life, that’s amazing Star and I hope you feel better soon FlowersSmile

Unbelievable

eejitgothurt · 22/04/2021 07:29

No, no hallucinations, just my positive humour about all this Grin It really is a beautiful view from here.

I didn't want an argument about dogs and do think this was just a random event due to the door being left open. The neighbour had popped in and the door was left open and off wandered little Martha (not her real name). I doubt reporting would do anything anyway so for now I'm not. If I have to have surgery then I might change my mind. It's less red but still very swollen.
