To not iron DD’s school uniform?

DD is in Reception and this term they’re allowed wear those lovely gingham summer school dresses.

I don’t iron. I hate it. And I’ve had a weekend of drudgery.

But they really don’t look right at all, and I’m worried about sending her in looking like a scruff.

What do people do?
@BlueLobelia I totally get what you’re saying. My DS sounds very similar, and I always want him to look well presented so that people know that someone cares and puts time into him if they just see a snapshot. I also recognise how mad it sounds.
Thanks

It can be so hard. x

For the ‘don’t bother, she’ll be a mess anyhow’ crew, here’s how the lovingly ironed dress came home. She got wet playing with water and had to change into her spare leggings and polo shirt 🙄😂

Aren't you glad you sent her in all uncreased and ironed?Grin

@MrBond

I don't think creased clothes in isolation would be a cause for suspecting neglect for any professional. However, if the clothes were very obviously creased, I would probably notice, with my teacher hat on.

I wouldn't automatically suspect neglect, but I would wonder if the wheels were coming off at home a little. In isolation, very creased clothing is not a problem, but (donning my hard hat) it would encourage me to look a little bit closer in case there was anything else that might indicate that parents are struggling and may benefit from support.

I disagree with this. I'm a teacher and I don't iron or hang up any of my dd's school uniform!

If a child looked dirty then yes I'd keep a close eye to see if it's a one off or not, but absolutely not for non ironed uniform.

Fgs just iron your child's uniform 🙄

Vintagevixen · 19/04/2021 22:05

I don't own an iron, haven't ironed anything since the mid 1990's.

Life is too short to iron.

spaceghetto · 19/04/2021 22:13

I didn't used to iron but then I went to see ds Christmas play and you could really spot the children with the non ironed uniforms!

Stellaris22 · 19/04/2021 22:17

So instead of just enjoying the play you spent your time judging the kids appearances?

I think you're thinking of a different level of creased. FWIW, I've only ever noticed the the level of creasing in a child's uniform twice in my career, and both times there were wider safeguarding concerns. As this thread shows, not ironing school uniform is fairly common, but having your kid rock up as though they've been dragged through a hedge backwards is not- there is a difference, and the latter is noticeable.
