To not iron DD’s school uniform?

Rainallnight · 18/04/2021 20:05

DD is in Reception and this term they’re allowed wear those lovely gingham summer school dresses.

I don’t iron. I hate it. And I’ve had a weekend of drudgery.

But they really don’t look right at all, and I’m worried about sending her in looking like a scruff.

What do people do?

I saw some no crease spray in Asda today, might give it a go as I loathe ironing also. Spray on washed clothes and hang up to dry. Think it was Lenor

I had this predicament but then remembered it's PE tomorrow. For Tuesday I will probably do a quick iron (or get DH to do it!).

Do these sprays affect the feel of the clothes in any way?

A child bullying another child for an unironed uniform is pretty unpleasant. I don't think children do notice, and if they pick up on it then it's only because parents have instilled it into them.

Pinkyavocado · 18/04/2021 21:17

If it’s creased just iron it, it’ll take minutes.

ichundich · 18/04/2021 21:18

I have sometimes ironed pure cotton gingham dresses and the difference it made versus simply shaking them out and hanging them carefully straight after washing was negligible. Life is too short.

1Morewineplease · 18/04/2021 21:19

Just iron it.

Most of us don't like ironing, but a little school dress? Goodness just iron it. She'll have long enough ironing her own stuff when she's older.

Maltesercake · 18/04/2021 21:21

I iron for weddings and funerals. Maybe a job interview. That’s it. They come out of reception looking filthy and appear to spend all day playing in mud/coating themselves in paint/climbing trees/drawing on themselves with whiteboard pen so a slightly crumpled dress at the start of the day wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. Soon as they sit down it’ll crease anyway. Child is well rested, clean, wearing clean and appropriate clothes, properly fed, teeth brushed, hair done and fully equipped. That’s enough, I genuinely don’t care if they look slightly scruffy (I generally look a bit scruffy too). It would have to be pretty awful before I ironed anything. It’s still cold here tho so if you’re worried I’d just stick her shirt and pinafore/skirt/trousers on instead.

BettyOBarley · 18/04/2021 21:22

I love those summer dresses because they literally take 30 seconds to iron, I'd just get it done - it'll take you longer to get the iron out!
For next time get some of that Lenor Crease Releaser!

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 18/04/2021 21:25

I don't iron DD's.

Some cuts/fabrics seem to really need ironing so DD has none of those.Grin

Aprilshowersandhail · 18/04/2021 21:27

When my dd was a baby I used to iron her df's collar and cuffs only.. Poor buggar couldn't take his jumper off at work when he was too hot!!

I've not ironed any uniform in a decade. But I do always hang it on the line to dry which stops little creases. (Yes, I'm forever checking the weather).

Zerrin13 · 18/04/2021 21:31

What is so unbearable about ironing a little dress! This is absurd! Its hardly like scrubbing floors on your hands and knees or doing the weekly wash with a mangle!

I just can’t agree. Life is too short to spend time on ironing. Work out how you can best hang the dress to minimise or eradicate creases.

I buy crease resistant school trousers because I hate ironing. My kids know I don’t iron, and if they really need something ironed, they know where the iron and ironing board are.

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 21:34

I used to. Now mine are in y4 and y6 and we have Covid-19, so, no more.

Sometimeswinning · 18/04/2021 21:35

Crease spray does not work. Use it for sofas and carpets, not laminate, wood or vinyl! Turns onto a skating rink!

Those saying it takes 2 minutes. Please time ironing board out, iron out and heating up. If you cant calculate 2 mins I'd use your spare time elsewhere.
No 5 year old bullys for creased clothes (my 5 year old would definitely hold her own to that!)

Princesspickle777 · 18/04/2021 21:36

I don’t iron most things unless it’s bad but I always iron school uniform!! I think it’s important they look smart at school.

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 21:37

No one cares if a 5 year old has creases in her dress. Seriously.

BrokenDishwasher · 18/04/2021 21:38

I don’t Iron, I got a steamer. £15 from amazon and I literally run it over the clothes while they’re hung up. It takes seconds and it’s bloody easy!

ShiningGonnaShine · 18/04/2021 21:38

I nearly started a thread about this kind of thing earlier this evening. My DD's summer dresses are fuckers to iron... They're the M&S stripey ones that say 'they only need a little press' in the description. Do they fuck.

I 'don't iron' either but these dresses are so horrendously creased when they come out of the wash that I just can't avoid it. And then they won't iron nicely - I literally can't get the creases out.

Any tips? Should I iron when they're still wet/damp?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 18/04/2021 21:38

Because I hate ironing, I don't want to and it's not worth the faff for a "little dress"(or 5) and because they look good enough without it.

Half of the reception kids come out at the end of the day like they've beed dragged through a hedge with all kinds of indistinguishable stains on them anyways.

Oly4 · 18/04/2021 21:39

Buy the type that are not pure cotton.. they never need ironing!

ShiningGonnaShine · 18/04/2021 21:40

@BrokenDishwasher - do those things really work? I've wanted one for ages (after seeing someone use one in a charity shop) but assumed I'd need to get an industrial/expensive job for it to actually get creases out.
