To not iron DD’s school uniform?

Rainallnight · 18/04/2021 20:05

DD is in Reception and this term they’re allowed wear those lovely gingham summer school dresses.

I don’t iron. I hate it. And I’ve had a weekend of drudgery.

But they really don’t look right at all, and I’m worried about sending her in looking like a scruff.

What do people do?

If you have a tumble dryer and you get them straight out when dry they won't need ironing. But I wouldn't send any of mine in with creased uniform.

EileenGC · 18/04/2021 20:18

Are they plain cotton? You can’t go wrong with that when it comes to ironing, and it’ll take 5 minutes. But I adore ironing, can I come do it for you please? Grin

Stick in on a hanger and hang it up in the bathroom while you shower tonight then leave it to dry off on the hanger overnight. The steam will help get rid of creases.

Nsky · 18/04/2021 20:20

I iron my summer linen stuff, wish I had a washing machine with a steam setting at the end tho

Sometimeswinning · 18/04/2021 20:20

This is so sad to read! Dont iron it!! Kids are made to be scrappy.

Siennabear · 18/04/2021 20:23

I don’t iron either. Life’s to short.

MrBond · 18/04/2021 20:24

I'd iron it. I hate ironing and try to buy stuff that doesn't need it, but I wouldn't go to work in a very obviously creased dress, and nor would I expect my child to go to school in one.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 18/04/2021 20:25

I’d iron it without a doubt, would have taken two minutes to do a child’s dress.

Volcanoexplorer · 18/04/2021 20:26

Can’t bear un-ironed clothes. I can definitely tell when something hasn’t been ironed so I iron pretty much everything. I wish I didn’t care because it’s so time consuming, but I really do so I’d iron them.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 18/04/2021 20:26

The M&S ones that are a cotton/polyester mix (I think?) go into the tumble dryer and come out nicely wrinkle-free, except perhaps the collar. But if you pull that out flat afterwards it is OK.

katy1213 · 18/04/2021 20:27

No five-year-old will notice!

JeanneDoe · 18/04/2021 20:28

I buy the nice John Lewis dresses. They look a bit crumpled after a wash.
Ironically the cheap supermarket dresses rarely need washing. But the fabric is terrible.

LST · 18/04/2021 20:28

I never ever iron. The dc are in shirts at school now and I still don't iron. Its all in the drying

aiwblam · 18/04/2021 20:29

I’ve never ironed a thing for my dcs. They are teens. I try to either tumble dry or hang stuff up immediately as the wash finishes, carefully.

I no longer iron anything for myself or dh now either. Just hang shirts carefully.

aiwblam · 18/04/2021 20:29

And don’t buy stuff that doesn’t fit in with not ironing.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 18/04/2021 20:30

Well I’m not up for mine looking scruffy, so if it needs ironing, I’ll iron it.

Luzina · 18/04/2021 20:31

Hang it on a hanger, put some fabric conditioner and lots of water in a spray bottle, spray dress, leave on hanger to dry. It won’t look crisply ironed but it won’t be creased. Alternatively Chuck in dryer with a few ice cubes, whip it out and hang it up. I don’t iron anything, ever

Pumpkintopf · 18/04/2021 20:33

Just give it a quick iron then you can stop worrying about it!

1678bfj7 · 18/04/2021 20:33

Avoid the 100% cotton gingham dresses, as even after ironing they look scruffy. I soon gave up on those and bought some cotton/polyester mix.

With polyester mix dresses, tumble dry them and hang them up as soon as the dryer finishes and there is no need to iron them. Alternatively you could try drying them hanging from a hanger, I think that would probably be ok.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 18/04/2021 20:34

Iron it, it takes moments. I can’t wear clothes that are not ironed, I would feel so uncomfortable.

ThatDreamSheep · 18/04/2021 20:34

If it's just the pleats run your straighteners over them? 🙊

bananaboats · 18/04/2021 20:36

I'd iron it on this occasion if its very creased but I don't iron anything and avoid buying clothes that need ironed!

Rooroobear · 18/04/2021 20:37

I don’t iron either. My dds summer dresses look fine. Just hang after washing x

CatRatSplat · 18/04/2021 20:37

Within 5 min of being at school, their hair will be unkempt, shoes scuffed, mud on socks, and clothes creased if not been removed (coats etc). Don't worry about it!

mishgs · 18/04/2021 20:38

I always iron..... I hate ironing but I couldn't send my kids in scruffy. They come home looking beyond dishevelled but to me that's the sign of a good day.
