Princess Anne the only female behind the hearse

While the funeral was beautiful, I couldn’t help feeling annoyed that Princess Anne was the only female to walk behind the hearse. Surely all the grandchildren could have been included. Instead we see Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara tottering along on high heels. It would have been so much better to see them take an equal place with the men.

"I can't really imagine that PP specified that all the lady mourners, bar his wife and daughter, had to totter about in six inch heels"

I think that at any "event" they all seem to wear heels.

Can't say that I'd ever fancy walking behind a coffin for a funeral that's being televised.

Whatever their reasons-it's fine!

MNHasCorruptedMe · 18/04/2021 11:11

@Meredusoleil

I thought it was because she's PP's only daughter?
I thought so too or because she wanted to.

Not everything is about "equal rights with the menz", although I think the RF have a lot of outdated and sexist traditions.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:11

@PenfoldPenny

Surely Princess Anne was the only female behind the hearse as the only female child of Prince Phillip and the Queen? And the only grandchildren following the hearse were William and Harry - none of the other grandchildren were following the hearse (as is traditional I think) so yes Anne was the only female.
The fella in between Harry and William was a grandchild too. Anne's son maybe?
Crosstrainer · 18/04/2021 11:12

Peter Phillips walked. He is the Queen and D of E’s first grandchild (Princess Anne’s son).

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:14

It's certainly not lineage anyway as Camilla (maybe?) but certainly Kate rank higher than Anne I think. I don't know how the spouses fare out though really.

Brefugee · 18/04/2021 11:14

Elders taking precedence is the fundamental principle on which the Royal Family operates.

and despite the change to the law - male primorgeniture.

@CeeceeBloomingdale

I think it's no more than Anne is only daughter. It's only 3 week since Zara gave birth and Eugenie wasn't much earlier. Peter was probably included to keep the peace between William and Harry and also because he doesn't have a partner so makes that less conspicuous.
Peter was probably included to keep the peace between William and Harry

Do you think William and Harry would have broken into fisticuffs in the middle of procession if Peter wasn't there? I doubt that's why he was between them.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:15

I'm actually talking nonsense now that I think of it as lineage would refer to blood lines. Spouses married in, wouldn't rank higher than blood I suppose. When Kate becomes Queen, will Anne have to curtsey to her?

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:16

It's so archaic and old-fashioned. All these stiff old rules. Fascinating nonetheless.

Lockdownbear · 18/04/2021 11:17

The only grandson who didn't walk was Edwards boy James, who's only about 14.

I'm sure it will have been discussed with him being given the final say.

Whatever the discussions one thing Prince Philip can't be accused of is not knowing it is like to walk behind the coffin of a close relative when you are only a child. He walked behind is sister and possibly her children when he was only 16.

MorrisZapp · 18/04/2021 11:18

I thought it was brilliant. Made Princess Anne look special and iconic in a way, and as his only daughter she absolutely should. Poor old Andrew trailing behind looking awkward, as well he might.

The precedence between royal ladies massively depends on if their husbands are with them, and the events.

In general, at events like this, when William and Kate are king and Queen everyone else will have to curtsy. The only possible exception will be Camilla if she has been queen (the Queen never expected QEQM or Queen Mary to curtsy to her).

@Legwarmers

Seems quite straightforward to me PP chose His 4 children 1st grandchild Successor to throne favourite grandson.

Makes sense to me ! Wink

Favourite? Why do people always want to do this. Can't we just love all our children and GC? If I'm asked this I say, and it is true, it varies depending on how much they are annoying me at any given time.

Camilla ranks higher than Kate.
Peregrina · 18/04/2021 11:20

Peter Phillips is a grandson too.

Found this interesting about when Kate becomes queen. I think things might be somewhat different for Camilla, but I'm not sure?

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:21

Camilla ranks higher than Kate.

But do Camilla and Kate rank higher than Anne as things stand?

AngeloMysterioso · 18/04/2021 11:22

PETER WAS IN THE MIDDLE BECAUSE HE IS THE ELDEST.

For fuck’s sake.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:23

Maybe rank is the wrong term. It's my layman's way of trying to see who is deemed most important, but it might be totally different to what I imagined.
I guess when Charles is King, Anne will be simply nothing. Sister of the King (like Margaret was to Elizabeth). Camilla will be more important. Important isn't probably the right word either.

Anything that applies to Kate when William becomes king also applies to Camilla when Charles does.

Regardless of title she will be Queen.

The single difference between them as Queen consort is that if widowed Camilla could never been Queen Mother whereas Kate could.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:23

'Senior' is the word I'm looking for I think!

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:24

Will Kate not become King mother when George takes over?

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 11:25

@Isthereaduckinthehouse

Camilla ranks higher than Kate.

But do Camilla and Kate rank higher than Anne as things stand?

It depends on the occasion and if their husbands are there.

If it’s a private function and no husbands then the Queen’s personal precedence puts blood princesses, particularly Anne and Alexandra, higher than married in princesses.

If their husbands are there then Camilla and Kate outrank Anne as they take their husbands rank.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 11:26

Or is it she's a Queen and a mother so she's the Queen mother.
I presumed it was reference to mother of the Queen so presumably mother of the King so King mother! Lol, I'm inventing titles for them now!

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 11:26

@Isthereaduckinthehouse

Will Kate not become King mother when George takes over?
No, she’d be Queen mother.

It basically means Dowager Queen who is Mother of the current monarch.
