Princess Anne the only female behind the hearse

While the funeral was beautiful, I couldn’t help feeling annoyed that Princess Anne was the only female to walk behind the hearse. Surely all the grandchildren could have been included. Instead we see Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara tottering along on high heels. It would have been so much better to see them take an equal place with the men.

Would she not just be the Queen Dowager? I thought the Queen Mother name was given as she and her daughter both had the same first name, so it prevented confusion when people said “Queen Elizabeth” especially since at the time people were used to the Queen Mother being known as Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II was better known, as she had been until then, as Princess Elizabeth.

To be Queen mother you must also be Queen Dowager. Having the same name is why QEQM was so well known as QM, but it wasn’t a title created for her.

Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra were both Queen Mother, but chose not to use it.

In reality unless George is married to a Catherine it’s unlikely she’d use it, but it would be one of her titles available.
@Oncemoretwicemore think that poster is saying why did Princess Anne’s husband walk but other (female) spouses didn’t
Maybe it was because Meghan couldn't be there and Camilla couldn't/wouldn't.

@JustLyra

Yes if she outlives William. King's Mother doesn't roll of the tongue as easily as Queens Mother or Queens Mum

Kate would only be “the King’s mother” if she’s not Queen first.

If she is Queen then widowed she’ll be HM Queen Catherine Queen Mother. King won’t feature in her title

Why would she be Queen Mother? She didn't give birth to the Queen.

When the Queen was crowded her Granny Queen Mary? Her mother Queen Elizabeth were both still living.
Queen Mary was not known as Queen Mother while he son was on the throne.

Having three Queens and two of them called Elizabeth is confusing hence trying to come up with a suitable different name / title for a relatively young widowed Queen.

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 12:07

Also QEQM was mostly known as that to the public to differentiate. At court, so in the court circular for example, QEQM was still “HM Queen Elizabeth” as the Queen is “HM The Queen”

@Laggartha

I'd put money on Peter Philips was there between Harry and William due to whats gone on between them.

Really? What do you envisage happening if he hadn't?

He was there as the eldest grandchild and he's male! If they wanted a bouncer Mike Tindall would have been a better choice. I was surprised at how much shorter than William Peter is, he always looked quite tall.
JustLyra · 18/04/2021 12:09

Why would she be Queen Mother? She didn't give birth to the Queen.

The Queen part refers to her being the last Queen Consort. Nothing to do with her child.

Dowager Queen, Mother of the current monarch.

The Queen mother title wasn’t created for QEQM.

CaesarsDream · 18/04/2021 12:09

Whether you or agree with it or not, it was a part of Prince Philip's final wishes. It's hardly criminal.

rwalker · 18/04/2021 12:09

@Loopylobes
I struggle to believe that anyone above the aged of ten genuinely believes that two grown men, one of whom is the heir to the throne, require a arbiter to walk between them at their grandfather's funeral, in full view of millions of people, with their every word and movement analysed to the nth degree by gossip-mongers, to ensure that they don't start laying into each other. I've read some ridiculous comments on MN but this takes the biscuit!

I'm not for 1 minute saying it's to to stop them kicking off at each other.
There issues makes sense to put someone else there .
As for ridiculous comments I think saying there should be more women there to equal it up I find that ridiculous. he only has 1 daughter and there is limited numbers .

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 12:11

Queen Mary was Queen Mother, but didn’t use it. There was no need too.

They never use all of their titles. Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra didn’t use Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth did.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 18/04/2021 12:11

Why? If you don’t think there would be any issues, why would they need someone else between them? It makes absolutely no sense.

Lockdownbear · 18/04/2021 12:15

If Charles dies before the Queen, therefore he is never King and Camilla not becoming Princess/Queen Consort. So the Crown going to William.

What would Camilla be called?

As she currently uses the Cornwall title she’d likely be Dowager Duchess of Cornwall
JudgeJ · 18/04/2021 12:18

@Lockdownbear

I'd think they've tried to balance tradition just the men walking, Anne stamping her Royal foot, mee too! And not having more people walking than already seated in the Chapel.

Maybe if the funeral had been bigger and different timing (ie not just after two of them had given birth) then Zara, B & E would have walked too.

So a funeral with 30 people 8 walked?

BTW I'm not suggesting either Zara or Eugenie are special flowers. Zara is clearly a chip of her mum, you don't become an Olympic champion being a special flower. But soon after giving birth she might still be sore and uncomfortable.
It's one thing having a leisurely stroll back up the hill, it's another having to walk in procession keeping the pace with others.

I doubt that Anne would have to resort to foot stamping, her father organised his funeral and I would imagine that she would be almost at the top of his list after Charles, but only for dynastic reasons, otherwise she would be Number 1. She often the lone woman, eg the Cenotaph.
RedactedTaeFeck · 18/04/2021 12:20

It made sense in that the 4 children came first - 4 in a row is a bit much so they were 2 2s, then came the eldest male grandchildren, so they are only 3 in that group so they go to in one row. peter in the middle for balance and as he's the eldest. If James had walked then it might have been William & Harry and then Peter with James behind, or more likely, Peter with William and the Harry and James behind.

Anne is the only child with a male spouse.

Essentially its a male thing but with concession to Anne who is a child and also because of who she is and presumable both PP and Anne wanted it that way. No female grandchildren or grandchildren spouses were included, of either gender.

sashh · 18/04/2021 12:24

There may be many reasons but one is that if Anne wasn't next to Charles then it would be Andrew or Andrew and Edward. I don't think they wanted Andrew on the front row.

With social distancing you can't really have four people walking side by side, a 2:2 makes more sense.

LittlestBoho · 18/04/2021 12:24

I can just imagine Mike Tindall, the enforcer, rugby tackling William and Harry to the ground if they start anything. Grin All this conjecture that they had to be kept apart is clearly ludicrous anyway; they are royal princes at a funeral, not rednecks on Jerry Springer.

Lockdownbear · 18/04/2021 12:27

But I thought the Cornwall title would return to the Crown for it to be reissued along with the PoW title.

Lockdownbear · 18/04/2021 12:30

I think if James had walked it would have been, Peter, & William then Harry & James.

Basically the same order as the 4 children.

Can you imagine the thread if it had been Mike Tindall walking there Grin
BalloonSlayer · 18/04/2021 12:31

As recently as Victorian times women did not attend funerals.

My guess would be that the males only walking behind the coffin is a throwback to that. Anne being included would have been because it would be weird to have excluded her as her brothers were there, and also I suspect that she would not have stood for it.

I feel that Peter Phillips was put between W and H not to keep the peace - ridiculous! - but to prevent attempts to get a perfect close up photo of the two princes looking (obviously) unhappy becoming the focal point of all the photographers on the day.

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 12:32

It would.

So when William becomes King George will be Duke of Cornwall. His wife would be Duchess of Cornwall.

So Camilla would go from being HRH Duchess of Cornwall to HRH Dowager Duchess of Cornwall. She would no longer be the Duchess

Which, in very blunt terms, means “wife of the last duke, who is dead”

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 12:32

Who the fuck is James?
BilboBercow · 18/04/2021 12:33

No idea why most people are skirting around it. It's because of their penises. The Royal family only recently changed their rules that the eldest male would inherit the crown so it's now first born.

It's no surprise Philip was a traditionalist, however it was his funeral so I can't get worked up about it

JustLyra · 18/04/2021 12:34

@Isthereaduckinthehouse Viscount Severn, the Queen and Philip’s other grandson.
