To get my hair cut short, really short

Mylittlesandwich · 16/04/2021 23:55

I'm 28 and fat. Really very fat. I've hidden behind long hair for about a decade. I'm coming out the other side of a challenging pregnancy followed by PND followed by DH being unemployed and working 2 jobs.

I finally have clothes that I like and look good on me but my hair is a disaster, I dyed it myself about 2 years ago and have been so attached to the length that I've let it grow out and it looks weird. I feel like it's time for a change but I don't want to regret it.

Attached is the style I have my eye on but not the colour.

I've had my hair short for years.
Think Jamie Lee Curtis style.
Short hair suits me as I've only got a small face
Goi for it

FOJN · 17/04/2021 10:05

It looks great but I wouldn't describe that as a really short style.

Hair grows back so I'd do it if I was you. I've had everything from waist length hair to a close crop over the years, sometimes going from one to the other in a single cut, I have never cried over a haircut even if I haven't loved it. If you're the type to just shrug and wait for it to grow out if you don't like it then just do it.

Same!

Random strangers have compared me to her (i wish! It’s only cos i have a long face and short hair...but still, I’m taking it as a win)

BornOnTwelthNight · 17/04/2021 10:14

I think if you’ve had short hair previously then absolutely go for it. It Certainly sounds like you have the style to carry it off.

thetemptationofchocolate · 17/04/2021 10:15

I have done this. I had really long hair at one time (could almost sit on it) and had it cut to about an inch long all over. It was a very liberating experience and I loved it.
If it's what you want, go for it :)

eaglejulesk · 17/04/2021 10:19

Go for it OP !! Love that style.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/04/2021 10:20

If you've had short hair before then you know what it's like so go for it. I had a very shiort pixie before the pandemic but I'm now approaching bob length again. I like to change my hair regularly but I do love it short most of all.

SarahAndQuack · 17/04/2021 10:29

Ooh, that's making me want to grow my hair out and do that style. I wonder if the flicky bit would get annoying, though. I can imagine it's the sort of style that looks lovely when you're sitting still but when you catch a glimpse of yourself on the move, it looks a bit like accidental damage?

Anyway. I'd do it, because it'll grow out and there's a lovely freedom to getting a dramatic change.

TankGirl97 · 17/04/2021 10:32

Definitely do it! It sounds like you have good hair to go short, and it would suit your dungaree style.
My hair is really long at the moment but I've had pixie crops in the past and loved it. The only downside is the cost of having to get it cut a lot. Mine grows fast so it was every 5 weeks for me.

Incywincyspinsters · 17/04/2021 10:38

@AppleKatie

It’s a lovely style. It would be frowned upon where I work though (rightly or wrongly- different issue, but it definitely would be). So do think through every angle before you decide.

I like it but the work issue + the fact I’m too lazy to style it every day would put me off.

Where do you work that has a say in how you cut your own hair??
Mellonsprite · 17/04/2021 11:07

It looks fab, and I like short hair. I do like the colour

Lovethewater · 17/04/2021 11:22

I had my hair cut from waist length to short in one go and never regretted it. Good advice about consultation with your hairdresser first so they can advise if this style will work with your hair type or suggest something similar if not. Short hair does need more regular trims than long hair to keep in shape, but a lot quicker to wash, dry and style in between.

Roszie · 17/04/2021 11:25

Mine is like that but shorter. I love it.

amusedbush · 17/04/2021 11:28

I had that exact haircut (mine was turquoise though!) ten years ago and I loved it. I say go for it!

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 17/04/2021 11:32

I think you should go for it! I always wanted very short hair and it took me years to build up the courage to have it done. I really like it and am proud of myself as it is a very brave move. If you don't go for it how will you ever know? And if you just go partway, then that won't help as it won't be the style you are looking for.

Teawaster · 17/04/2021 11:32

I like it but it would never sit like that for me for long

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 17/04/2021 12:04

Short hair suits some people really well but others not so much. Unless you have had it short before and know it’s something that suits your face shape, I wouldn’t risk it personally. I have a heart shaped face so quite an angular jaw, bob length suits me best. I’ve had pixie cuts in the past and I looked like a little boy. They’re also a nightmare to grow out, there’s a god awful in between stage where you just want to hide your hair in a hat 24/7.

Maybe try a similar wig first to see how much it suits? It’s quite a drastic change going from long to very short, it might be worth having it cut to your shoulders first.

GoWalkabout · 17/04/2021 12:18

If you loved short hair before I say go for it.

bluebluezoo · 17/04/2021 12:24

Bollocks to the nervous nellies saying don’t!!

Hair grows, relatively quickly. That kind of style will grow out in a couple of months, and you can pin or tie it, or get creative so it looks good.

I currently have waist length hair and am booked to get it cut to a similar length to your photo, only mine is straight and fine so a different style.

Even if I’m not keen I’ll just grow it and pick a different style next time until I find one I like better.

emilyfrost · 17/04/2021 12:29

I don’t think short hair looks good on any woman but you do you 🤷‍♀️ As long as you like it what does it matter what anyone else thinks?

springtimedaffs · 17/04/2021 12:46

I have really short hair and love it! In fact the hair in your inspiration pic is what I could only achieve after months of letting it grow.

BUT this last year has been a PITA for keeping short hair because of the lockdowns and salon closures. Short hair requires regular haircuts to look good, and last year has been the year of endless mullets. So personally I have decided to grow my hair out till I am sure we are properly out of lockdowns. Could you go for a lower maintenance haircut for a while before going super short?

Crowsaregreat · 17/04/2021 12:54

Do it, long hair can look a bit apologetic, especially if you're fat. Short hair kicks arse.

That style will need very regular recutting though. I'd have it shorter on top.

PassionPeach · 17/04/2021 12:58

Look nice. Just beware, as someone who has had all sorts of hairstyles, including bic razoring my head, the grow out can be quite a nightmare if you get to that stage. Get ready for lots of tucking behind the ear, conveniently placed hairclips. I'm sure it will suit you regardless of you weight. Last tip is to not let the hairstyle wear YOU. Teach it who's boss and have fun with it.

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 17/04/2021 13:05

Why do you have to go from one extreme to the other?

Mylittlesandwich · 17/04/2021 13:25

Regular cuts isn't an issue, I have the time and money.

I don't have to go from one extreme to the other and I did look for an in between but I haven't found one I like.
