To call the police if this happens one more time

I am so sick of our fucking neighbours they just have absolutely no respect for anyone.

There have been a few issues but my biggest annoyance recently is that they and their friends just seem to think it's fine to use our driveway all the time. They have a front garden, we have a drive. They are separated by a fence but there is a gap at the top to get bins in and out of the back of the houses.

Their friends are always riding motorbikes up and down our drive, or even just pacing up and down it taking phone calls. I have gone out and asked several times that they don't do this because it sets off our dog and often wakes our baby from his naps either by the dog barking or the noise from the bikes.

They have just done it again and woken up the baby, so I went out, crying baby in my arms and asked them to stop (politely) and to use their friends front garden if they wanted to get their bike out.

I just received a load of abuse back and he continued off down my drive.

AIBU to think this is cheeky as fuck and to ring the police if I see one person from there step foot on my property again when they shouldn't be?

If anyone else has any more creative suggestions to cheer me up in the meantime though feel free to keep them coming Grin
Haven't RTFT (sorry) but if they're riding bikes, could you install some nice www.amazon.co.uk/Stegastrip%C2%AE-Security-Intruder-deterrent-Anti-Climb/dp/B07JG7NL6Z?psc=1&source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 spikes at ankle level? Or a little trip-wire.
PlentyPlenty · 16/04/2021 18:23

I did write about it before but it was another issue (it was the back garden that time although I mentioned the driveway issue as well). We sorted that with a gate at the back like suggested but we don't have loads of money to just keep putting gates and fences up left right and centre unfortunately.

The post wasn't about the gate really anyway, more the fact that I got a load of verbal abuse for asking politely after multiple times and whether I should involve the police although I accept now that this isn't possible.
@PlentyPlenty ah, your dad is a policeman!

Any chance he's local and could pop by in full uniform?! Would the neighbours recognise him??

Definitely get the gate, but this is a golden opportunity to have a bit of fun with it.

Motion sensitive water canon?? [https://www.]] Just turn it off before the postman (or DH) comes!]
Another vote for motion sensitive water cannon!

coldwarenigma · 16/04/2021 18:24

Hold a BBQ in their front garden, as they seem to think it is a communal area.

UCOinanOCG · 16/04/2021 18:26

What cheeky fuckers they are! There is no mistaking that your drive is not a free for all! Get that gate in ASAP.

rjacksmiss · 16/04/2021 18:27

Put a dummy security camera up.. bunch of freaks.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 16/04/2021 18:31

I'm surprised.it took so long for someone to suggest penguin bollards, if you fit it yourself it might be quicker and cheaper than a gate

thetemptationofchocolate · 16/04/2021 18:32

I wonder if you can get a motion sensor-operated device to play loud music at them when they trespass? Because if you could, you could play them this:

What were they doing in the back garden? Bunch of fuckers!!

You just need the money for one more gate! Easy to say of course when lots of people are struggling for cash at the moment.

PlentyPlenty · 16/04/2021 18:40

Riding them up and down the passage (which was loud as hell!) and not closing the gate so our dog kept getting out onto the street despite us asking them if they could close it lots of times. (The passage opened up into our garden and then there was a gate to theirs so if the passage gate was left open it meant people could potentially get into our back garden). There was a few other things as well.

Have a hose ready and water the garden. And the Cfers..

Mumtofourandnomore · 16/04/2021 18:45

Nice gate half price gate here OP, it has some nice metal spikes on top too. I wonder if you can electrify metal gates (for the dog of course....)

DeRigueurMortis · 16/04/2021 18:51

Gritting salt is your friend (until you get a gate).

Motorbikes hate it - corrodes them like buggery and gravelly surfaces are not great to ride on.

DH has to wash his bike down straight after coming home if there has been salt on the roads.

Buy a big bag of the stuff (it's cheap) and make a "salt bank" where you would put the gate - at least 10cm high behind the bins.

Even if it doesn't stop them then at least you'll know they either have the hassle of rinsing down their bikes or them rusting because they didn't.

Plank of wood with some really long screws and nails on the ground where the gate would be. Points up!
GoWalkabout · 16/04/2021 18:56

I think it's dangerous to escalate. I would ignore for now, then quietly spruce up the front drive with a gate and a few obstacles to deter. I would however fit a camera and keep a record of behaviour, though I doubt it is in your interests to report sadly. Put your own safety first. Deescalate.

aModernClassic · 16/04/2021 19:02

@Unsure33

What about the front of the drive though . Will they still come on there when the gate goes on ? Do you need those pop up bollards ?
This.

The gate won't stop them going on your driveway, blocking off the top, might just make them worse.

Onlinedilema · 16/04/2021 19:07

Haven’t read the whole thread but how about getting some very large planters. Put bricks in the bottom and plant some very thorny F off roses in them.

Diva66 · 16/04/2021 19:07

Scatter tin tacks all over it.

HeronLanyon · 16/04/2021 19:13

Op - as well as gate etc ideas - keep a note of what happens and when. God back and try to add in things form past/recent past also. If at any stage you feel threatened then that is capable of possibly becoming harassment which you would report to police. Even if it all just dies down it good idea to have clear accurate list (and vid of you have security stuff).

starfishmummy · 16/04/2021 19:14

While the trespass isnt polkce matter, intimidating and abusing you could be. Lone female being terrorised in her garden.....

Landofthefree · 16/04/2021 19:36

Could you leave a dirty nappy open on top of the bin? They really won’t want to move the bin!

Abitofalark · 16/04/2021 19:39

One thing I have learned is that people who trespass and take liberties with their neighbours' property because they can, will not stop doing it: they have to be stopped by a physical barrier.

Contrary to suggestions above to scatter tacks or nails or other hazards, be aware you would be liable if any of them was injured or damaged by these. The fact that someone may be trespassing does not absolve you of responsibility for your actions that may cause harm.

Apart from the legal liability, it would also be a risky thing to do in terms of possible escalation and retaliatory actions, none of which would help you to feel safer and more secure in your home. If you can damage someone's bike, they could just as easily damage your car, for example.

BrilliantBetty · 16/04/2021 19:45

They sound so annoying. I'd hate this.
Huge gate as soon as you can. High fences.

Esquire3 · 16/04/2021 19:47

Bag of nails and cheap CCTV to log everything

Lavanderrose · 16/04/2021 19:48

This must be so annoying for you but you can’t use the police as your personal customer services. A crime hasn’t been committed. Maybe but some flowerpots or something down.
