Every time there's a thread about earnings, there's always multiple posters who claim that most people on the thread must be inflating or plain lying about their salaries.

Whilst I recognise that people lie, especially on anonymous forums, I find it quite sad that people prefer to dismiss these posts as lies rather than take inspiration/education from them (or just not care).

I come from a poor background - we never had enough money to the point that food and electricity use was rationed. We weren't on the streets, but that was a looming possibility. We lived (mostly) within the midlands.

I fell into nannying as a career (having dreamed of being a primary school teacher) and my first job was in Kensington. The housekeeper had been gossiping about the rent on the house we worked in - it was £3k a WEEK. This was 2012-ish. I remember wondering how on Earth anyone could afford paying £200k+ a year on rent alone, when - in my mind - earning just £50k was amazingly rich.

I remember walking through Kensington and Knightsbridge and Chelsea and seeing thousands and thousands and thousands of these houses, all huge and grand and all presumably commanding similar rent or sale value than the one I worked in. They were all clearly lived in and used.

Perhaps it was arrogance, or naivety, but I figured that if there were enough people who could afford to pay £1k, £2k, £5k+ a week on rent (or buy million pound houses), then there must be a lot of money out there to be earned, and I couldn't see any reason as to why I couldn't find a way to get a share of that money.

That's sort of how I feel about these earning threads - hundreds of people are posting about their high salaries and instead of scoffing that they must be sad-sacks who hang out on Mumsnet to lie about their lifestyles - I think it's inspiring and encouraging to see so many women out there making amazing money and securing their futures.

FWIW - I was 21 back in Kensington, amazed at the £3k a week rent. I'm coming up to 30 now and my average yearly income is about £120k. I remind myself every day of how lucky I am, and how 21 year old me would have been incredulous. Though I'm, of course, absolutely nowhere near being able to rent a £3k a week house Grin

"I run a recruitment agency"

Oh dear.

UserTwice · 16/04/2021 11:24

I don't think it's a revelation to anyone that if you get lucky, are tenacious and prepared to take risks and work hard there is money to be made.

Most people are happy with "enough" and don't see the need to earn megabucks. In fact, my observation is that it's people who already have lots that seem to think they are badly off - too much comparing themselves with the Jones'

MiniTheMinx · 16/04/2021 11:24

Nah, I'm just not inspired. Or incredulous, or bragging......I get by and sometimes I have to work. We can't all earn 3 figures, if we did we would all need to be adding zeros to to every number.

emmathedilemma · 16/04/2021 11:25

@justwant2beamum

Op so tell us what you actually did you earn this. I.e. job title now and career path to get there. Otherwise it's not really helpful
Exactly this!! A lot of people work incredibly hard but because of their chosen career will never earn these sorts of money. I'm well paid for what I do but within the industry I'll never be looking at a 6 figure salary unless I got to Company Director sort of level (which quite frankly isn't me anyway!).
sotiredofthislonelylife · 16/04/2021 11:25

@Pedalpushers

I prefer to take inspiration from people based on their specific achievements and what they've done to improve the world or help others. Being inspired by someone's salary is a bit sad.
How right you are - I can’t stand people who boast about how much they earn. It’s usually off the backs of others. I never earned a lot, but the job satisfaction I had working in adult learning disability services was much more important.
sageflower · 16/04/2021 11:26

Sounds like a multi level marketing pitch to me

Sparklingbrook · 16/04/2021 11:27

Do people come on MN to be inspired? And are threads about how much people earn the best place to do that?

Most are just on AIBU looking for threads about parking or a bunfight about cat poo.

SilverBirchWithout · 16/04/2021 11:27

Presumably you’ve achieved your high-earning status without being able to do maths.

£3k rent a week, would be £156k per annum, not £200k.

Can’t help wondering whether the £120k salary is calculated in a similar manner. Perhaps you are quoting business turnover rather than profit.

I think there are some people who are lying (and tbh it's usually the terminology they use that gives them away), but MN does trend towards a higher income demographic (there is no other forum I know of that has numerous threads dedicated to boarding school choices) and is SE-centric. Personally I do know a lot of high earning women - of my closest friends, I have at least 10 with an average salary of well above 150k all in (roles include partners in law firms, senior counsel in house investment banking at ED level or above, c-suite roles in industry). For context I'm in my 40's. Most of these women I met at Uni or while working in London (I used to be in investment banking).

So I think some people lie but not as many as some posters believe.

littlepattilou · 16/04/2021 11:30

@LigPatin I gather this is a hilariously ironic piss-take... Mocking the people who claim they earn over six figures a year? Has to be surely??? Grin

I knew as soon as I read the first couple of lines that you would end with disclosing your six figure salary. 😂
bilbodog · 16/04/2021 11:31

How much you earn is not based on how hard you work (apart from perhaps working hard at school and university to get a good education) but more to do with the line of work you choose to follow.

To get these high salaries you need to go into careers where you can progress up the ladder and also be prepared to move jobs and locations as and when required - even work abroad.

And for those who dont believe people earn these sums all you have to do is look on rightmove at the price of large houses and drive round the ‘posh’ areas of all cities/towns to realise that the people who live in those houses must earn more than £100,000 pa to afford them.

Rukaya · 16/04/2021 11:33

Nobody's missing the point 😂😂😂

There are multiple posts asking for help in finding the point. Which they missed.

TableFlowerss · 16/04/2021 11:33

@Pedalpushers

Most people will never be able to get your sort of salary just because they manifested it after being inspired on Mumsnet. There is a lot of money in the world but it's incredibly naive to think most of it is available for anyone to obtain, and a bit patronising to suggest those on low incomes just don't realise it's possible to earn more.
This with bells on. It’s a bit like ‘self made millionaires’ or business owners with millions. They often say anyone can do it etc and whilst it’s true everyone can attempt it, it’s blatantly obvious that most people won’t turn their business into multi million pound empires.

It’s no reflection of how hard they’ve worked, in that they haven’t worked hard enough... it’s simply mainly down to luck of lack of.

All millionaire businesses owners will work incredibly hard, there’s no doubt about that. However, that doesn’t mean that those that don’t attain millionaire status, don’t work as hard. Very naive to assume good luck hasn’t played a role otherwise we’d all be millionaires!!.....

Same applies to top jobs. There’s millions of people that work equally hard but they haven’t been noticed for that top promotion. It’s not to say if given he opportunity they wouldn’t be as successful as the successful candidate, but it wasn’t their time to shine. Perhaps had it been a different interviewer the outcome would have been different....

Hard work can and does pay a huge part in being successful, but luck contributes far more than people may like to realise......

theemmadilemma · 16/04/2021 11:33

High earning doesn't stop women having the kind of issues we post about on here.

I absolutely believe a lot of them. I know a fair few people who earn that kind of money. I still muse on the now women I had in my team my moons ago who clearly well out earns me having gone on to set up her own business in a completely different field. There are plenty of women earning £100k, £200k plus.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/04/2021 11:34

I earn a seven figure salary if anyone asks me and they are amazed.

Do you feel inspired to reach these heady heights? You do? Oh good, let me educate you on how I got in this amazing position.....

Just add .00 to the end of what you earn.

Howshouldibehave · 16/04/2021 11:35

There was a post on here last week from a nanny who said she earnt £10k a month which MN deleted. Interesting!

netstaller · 16/04/2021 11:36

What I find annoying is no one posts their job title or even field, so they're not inspiring as there's no detail - it's usually just comes across if boasting "I earn150k per year and I'm 31". If people gave details, doesn't have to be identifying, that would be so much more inspiring and interesting!

PurpleRainDancer · 16/04/2021 11:38

Are you still a Nanny OP?

CHIRIBAYA · 16/04/2021 11:38

The contributions to MN that I find inspiring and encouraging don't tend to relate to income but rather values and attitudes. Income on its own doesn't reveal much about someone's qualities or lack of. I couldn't care less what someone earns, how big their house is, what they drive or where they holiday. What I AM interested in is who they are as a person.

DoveGreylove · 16/04/2021 11:39

I believe them and I wish I was one of them!

There are so many wealthy people in the world it's crazy. My husband and I do ok, we are comfortable enough, but when we compare ourselves to others who live near us (not immediate friends) we realise how little money we have! I have to remember to put things into perspective and remind myself we do just fine!

PegPeople · 16/04/2021 11:39

I commented earlier curiosity got the better of me so I did a quick search. The OP used to be a Nanny but now runs an agency.

I run a recruitment agency for childcare professionals and before that I worked as a Nanny for 10 years.

I'd be still very curious to know where the OP lives and the pay progression though as Nanny's don't tend to earn huge saleries.

Lightsabre · 16/04/2021 11:39

I agree with you OP and it would be useful if you could let us know your journey to £120K please?
