I only poo once a week. Please help me go more often

I should be going more often. A typical days diet involves - no breakfast, lunch is a spicy scrambled egg but really more like vegetables binded together with 1 egg ( courgette, mushroom, pepper, spinach and jalapenos) followed by grapes. Dinner is usually a mega salad with chicken, fish, quiche. Small bar of chocolate, another fruit portion and maybe a yogurt. I drink at least 1.5 litres of water daily. Do Hiit training for 20 mins daily.

Yet the only thing that gets me going is having a beer at the weekend and then I think I poo for the whole week, though only once so its uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I have tried a colonic. The lady told me I will be more susceptible to bowel cancer (jeez thanks lady)

I really don't want to become dependant on laxatives but I think I might have to .

Can anyone advise me please?

Chia seeds in yogurt.

justjuggling · 15/04/2021 21:18

Grapefruit works for me! One every evening keeps things moving. 🙂

Livingonadream · 16/04/2021 17:47

For lunch today I have had a Tesco potato salad that went out of date yesterday. I can confirm that that will do the trick Blush

Sugar free gummie bears.
Just read the Amazon reviews Grin

@hopeso

OP, where's the fibre, the roughage? The things that actually make you poo? First thing is, I noticed you don't have breakfast. That's a bad start. Have a bowl of bran flakes or porridge with fresh fruit. You shouldn't eat eggs every day. I'm sure the recommended allowance is something like 2 a week? (Please check this.) Your diet also doesn't seem varied enough. Do you drink coffee or tea? These can help, they certainly help me! I can go 2-3 times a day most days! Even when I've done the 5:2 diet I've gone every day. Don't know if it's because I'm vegetarian? Have a look on the NHS website. You are suffering from constipation and there's loads of advice on there. I hope you can sort it out, but definitely recommend breakfast, less eggs and more fibre/roughage.
The fibre and the roughage is in the salad, surely.

Lots of people here saying eggs are binding, but I thought that had been debunked?

The idea that you must have breakfast is very outdated.

And if tea and coffee cured constipation there'd be hardly any in the UK.

Eat more fibre & less eggs OP!

Animum2 · 16/04/2021 22:02

MumofPsuedoAdult · 16/04/2021 22:07

The key word in your OP is 'bind'. You're eating too much egg (binding). Scrambled egg and quiche (egg based).

Hankunamatata · 16/04/2021 22:57

Fybogel sachets twice a day. If your not increasing fibre foods

Hankunamatata · 16/04/2021 22:59

Put you food into one of the apps that shows macros. I think you will find fibre is low

yeOldeTrout · 17/04/2021 07:41

"my hiit is the only exercise"

what does that mean, 20 minutes once a week?

How many hours/day do you spend sitting?

Scarlettpixie · 17/04/2021 08:44

You need fibre - whole grains, beans, some leafy greens and prunes. Cut out the eggs if you can. You also probably need to eat more, add more plants.

ShrinkingViolet9 · 17/04/2021 09:09

Did you say, up thread, that you are taking propranolol? Constipation is listed under "Common side effects":

www.rxlist.com/inderal-side-effects-drug-center.htm

Do you have a daily walk - even if it's only 15 minutes a day?

Try substituting apples and oranges for grapes; apples contain more fibre per 100grams than grapes and grapes are high in sugar.

Try substituting oatcakes (like Nairns rough or fine milled oatcakes) instead of a daily chocolate bar. Nairns also do a reduced sugar oat biscuit with chocolate chips - if you need a daily chocolate hit.

Could you tolerate adding shredded cabbage, grated carrot and walnuts in your "mega salads" as these have more fibre than some salad vegetables, which have a high water content?

As others have said, what you eat in a day does seem low in fibre.

I've eaten 7 eggs a week for years with no negative impact on bowel movements. I have a poached egg on wholemeal toast for breakfast every day and find eating breakfast with a coffee stimulates the urge to "go". Could you try oat based, low sugar muesli with stewed apple for breakfast?

1WayOrAnother2 · 17/04/2021 12:35

If you are low carbing you need to drink a LOT of water. (3 litres or more) This makes all the difference to bowel activity!

Also, if low carbing be sure to get your carbs from leafy veg . Eat lots of this and create a scrubbing brush for your intestines. (No need for grains.)

Eggs are not binding in our guts. (They are binding in useful ways when cooking and this got them a bad name 😁)

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 17/04/2021 12:42

Diets that are "good" for losing weight or staying very lean aren't necessarily the same as diets that are good for a regular digestive tract and healthy bowel.

Carbs and fiber will help to bulk and soften stools to keep it moving. Sugars draw water into bowels and loosen things up.

Proteins and fats can do the opposite and slow things down.
