I only poo once a week. Please help me go more often

I should be going more often. A typical days diet involves - no breakfast, lunch is a spicy scrambled egg but really more like vegetables binded together with 1 egg ( courgette, mushroom, pepper, spinach and jalapenos) followed by grapes. Dinner is usually a mega salad with chicken, fish, quiche. Small bar of chocolate, another fruit portion and maybe a yogurt. I drink at least 1.5 litres of water daily. Do Hiit training for 20 mins daily.

Yet the only thing that gets me going is having a beer at the weekend and then I think I poo for the whole week, though only once so its uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I have tried a colonic. The lady told me I will be more susceptible to bowel cancer (jeez thanks lady)

I really don't want to become dependant on laxatives but I think I might have to .

Can anyone advise me please?

Coffee and a cig Grin

Peace43 · 15/04/2021 15:11

Lactulose is your friend. Start with 1 teaspoon each morning and gradually increase until you go once per day. Lactulose won’t make your gut push it will just soften the stool which will help it pass naturally.

@sharalanda

"Please help me go more often" - all I could think of when I read that is holding your hand and rubbing your lower back, which is what I do to my four year old when he's having trouble going. So... not sure if that's any use, but I'm here if you need me.
Haha thank you. I might just take you up on that. You cant look though Grin

Many I know would swear by Coffee and a cigarette.....

Cheeseandlobster · 15/04/2021 15:17

@OverByYer

You don’t eat much.

If I’m constipated I find beer helps

It helps me too. If it was good for me I would drink it everyday. I love a good beer Smile

@Usernameucreate

Hi. I had constipation for decades. The G.P.s weren't much use. Usual advice of 'eat more fibre'. I had a sphincterectomy. It cured the constipation. I had an anal fissure and I was in serious pain. I advise you to look into an operation. Apparently a sphincterectomy is extremely common. I wish you well. I can't believe how much discomfort and pain I went through before the operation. ( under sedation. )
I had a fissure too years ago. My god the pain Biscuit Thats a bum not a biscuit. I will Google that

@DishingOutDone

Are you in pain? is this a new thing? have you been like this for years or since you started the lo carb? That's the questions that need answering first of all to rule out if you need to see GP. I can't understand why there's 9 pages of diet tips with only half a dozen people asking these particular questions and OP ignoring them!
I have been like it for years. I know the eggs dont help but the ibs cramps I had before them were terrible. I was doubled over multiple times a week. I think I prefer the not pooing

Your diet looks high in protein, which is good, but quite low in fibre - can you increase this?

Fibre doesn't necessarily mean wholegrains, btw, if you're low-carbing, but also fibrous vegetables, such as pears, carrots, beets, broccoli etc.

womaninatightspot · 15/04/2021 15:35

Carrots, apples and oranges.

grapewine · 15/04/2021 15:36

I rub circles on my stomach morning and evening. Weird maybe but it seems to help.

BellaVida · 15/04/2021 15:37

You definitely need more fibre to keep your digestive tract flowing. Add legumes, dark leafy greens and wholegrains to your meals. Beets, celery and apple are good too. You could chop those into a salad.
Too much egg won’t help either, as that can cause constipation.
Are your yoghurts ‘live’ cultures. If not, adding probiotics would be an idea. The cultures is tempeh and miso can also help digestion, so can the enzymes in papaya.

I used to work in care home years ago, and most of the ladies, and a few men,used to have a Fybolgel drink everyday, as they were mostly sitting down in chairs everyday, and some of the residents were paranoid and panicky about getting constipated,

Cheeseandlobster · 15/04/2021 15:43

All caught up. I have replied to quite a few but for some reasons not all of them have posted.

The roasted cauliflower and sweet potato recipes both sound delicious - thank you

I dont drink coffee but can have it black so will add this. I am also going to add flax seeds, prunes/prune juice, apples n oranges and I am going to replace my chocolate bar with a bowl of All Bran / Fruit n Fibre/weetabix.

I might also try a trip to the library or Morrisons Grin

I agree about the stretched bowel as my poo is very large when it does come out. Tmi sorry Blush

I dont get the urge very often and have tried giving it time but nothing. When I need to go though I need to go.

I am currently working from home with 1 office day a week so my hiit is the only exercise. I can try to add walking in too though if this would help.

The only meds I take are propanolol. I have tried lsctulose and nothing. I think its a trip to the GP and maybe Movicol providing its a short term thing

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to post

My sister only pooed once a week after she went through the change. She is vegan (don't know if that helped or not) and was fairly switched on to healthy eating. Anyway, she started having very bad tummy ache which went on for a while, and eventually was diagnosed with an impacted colon (full of poo apparently) and had to have part of lower bowel and appendix removed. Please do not ignore tummy aches and I know that we're all different but if your bowel habits change, please take it seriously. As to needing a dump when you're in a library - I worked in one for 25 years and found you can control this urge fortunately.

CharlotteRose90 · 15/04/2021 16:29

Oh gosh you poor thing. I have ibd and sometimes can go weeks. You need movicol from the doctor, orange juice , tinned prunes or prune juice and some sort of brown bread. Even bananas. Strangely I find having a hot bath helps me too.

cooldarkroom · 15/04/2021 16:41

My dietician says you need a small amount of carbs 4 times a day ti keep transit active

whatisforteamum · 15/04/2021 16:49

VaVaGloom · 15/04/2021 16:49

PussInBin20 · 15/04/2021 17:03

Lots of prunes & veggies - a medical practitioner told me once when I was very constipated (to the point of being in agony)!

Mary46 · 15/04/2021 17:03

Hi op I feel your pain! I end up with piles so really have watch it. Water and sliced lemon helps me. Im awful abroad maybe its the heat

adrianmolesmole · 15/04/2021 17:34

Sounds like you're constipated. Bananas help! And more fruit and yoghurt in general. Perhaps look into whether you're intolerant to Dairy or wheat, both can cause constipation, do you get tummy upsets?

adrianmolesmole · 15/04/2021 17:34

Or bloating?

MovedByFanciesThatAreCurled · 15/04/2021 17:38
